Herbert Clough Obituary

Herbert N. Clough, a former Roanoke County, Va., resident, died in Atlanta, Ga., on December 2, 2009, in the Veterans Administration Nursing Home. A son of the late Ernest R. and Nellie May (Hewitt) Clough, he was 91. Clough was a World War II veteran serving in the United States Army Air Corp. He was held for 18 months as a prisoner of war at Luft Stalag One in Barth, Germany. During his life time he had been a member of various veterans organizations including the Salem, Va., posts of Order of the Purple Heart and the Disabled Veterans of America. A native of Woonsocket, R.I., he moved to Roanoke County in 1988. He had been employed for 50 years as a machinist and was a Free Mason. Returning to school later in life, he obtained an Associate Degree from Bryant University in 1977. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his wife of 58 years, Geraldine (Vincent) Clough. He is survived by son, Richard and a daughter-inlaw, Nancy, both of Lithia Springs, Ga.; and two grandchildren, Roxanne Hill, of Powder Springs, Ga., and Jennifer Zambriczki, of Summerville, S.C.; and three great-grandchildren. He will be buried along side his wife at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens in Roanoke. The Rev. Robert Alderman of Shenandoah Baptist Church will conduct a graveside service 2 p.m. on Monday, December 7, 2009. Jones-Wynn Funeral Home of Douglasville, Ga., is serving the Clough family. 770-942-2311.
