Marion Burks Obituary

May 10, 1916 ~ December 5, 2009 Marion Thomas Burks, 93, of Roanoke, Va., died gently at home on Saturday, December 5, 2009, under the loving care of her son, William Perry Burks Jr. and niece, Andrea McCall Harris. Mrs. Burks was the daughter of the late Marquis D. and Minnie Shively Thomas, of Floyd, and is survived by her son and by her sisters, Doris T. Ingram, of Floyd, and Jessica T. McCall, of Albany, Ga.; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Mrs. Burks was preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, W. Perry Burks, of Bedford, who passed away on May 12, 1992; and by her sisters, Lila T. Brogan, Alma T. Tredinnick, Annie T. Trail, and Erma T. Woodburn; and her brother, Shurley Thomas. She was an active member of St. James Episcopal Church, which her husband helped to found in 1950, and where she served on the altar guild for many years and was active in the Episcopal Church Women. She had been a member of an auxiliary of the William Watts Chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy, in which she was active as long as her health permitted. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in her memory to St. James Episcopal Church. Visitation will be at the Burks' home, 4613 Delray Street, Northwest, Roanoke, on Friday, December 11, 2009, from 2 until 8 p.m. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. on Saturday, December 12, 2009, at St. James Episcopal Church, 4515 Delray Street, Northwest, with The Rev. Susan Bentley officiating, after which her body will be interred in the churchyard of St. Thomas Episcopal Church, Sedalia (Bedford), Va., beside her husband. Arrangements are by Oakey's North Chapel, 540-362-1237.

"Receive her, O merciful Savior, into the arms of your mercy, into the blessed rest of everlasting peace, and into the glorious company of the saints in light."
