Juanita Brumfield Obituary

Juanita G. (Cookie) Brumfield, 99, of Salem, Va., after a full life of service to her Lord and Savior, her family and friends, gracefully departed this world on Sunday, December 13, 2009, to begin her eternal journey with Jesus Christ. She was born on November 4, 1910, in Amherst County, Va., daughter of the late Willoughby Johnson Black and Annie Sligh Clements Black. She was also preceded in death by all of her brothers and sisters; two husbands, Clarence E. Cook and Matthew C. Brumfield; son, Courtney Wayne Cook; and her special son-in-law, James L. Conner Jr. She is survived by her daughter, Ann Conner, of Salem; grandchildren, Tom Conner, of Roanoke, Courtney Lewis Conner and wife, Barbara, of Boones Mill, and Mary Lynn Grubb and husband, Jerry, of Salem; three great-grandchildren, Kate Conner, Matthew Grubb and Conner Grubb; and a very devoted niece, Ms. Helen Cline, of Ohio. Cookie was an active member of Locust Grove United Methodist Church in Salem until her health began to decline. She loved her church and church family. She was an active member in the Order of the Eastern Star for many years desiring to serve all she came in contact with. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, December 15, 2009, at John M. Oakey and Son, Salem, Va. A graveside service will be conducted 11 a.m. on Wednesday, December 16, 2009, at Cedar Hill Cemetery in Covington, Va. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the American Heart Association. The Brumfield family is being served by John M. Oakey and Son Funeral Home in Salem, Va., 540-389-5441.
