M. Thompson Obituary

M. Winfred Thompson, 78, of Ferrum, Va., passed away peacefully to be with his Lord on Sunday, December 13, 2009, holding the hand of his loving wife. He was born April 22, 1931, to the late Berther Taft and Lera Jones Thompson. He was preceded in death by a grandson, Michael Anthony (Tony) Furrow. He retired from Ferrum College after 36 years, serving as an electrician and later Superintendent of Building and Grounds. Winfred was a charter member of the Ferrum Volunteer Fire Department serving 25 years and achieving the rank of Chief. He was also a longtime member of the Evangelistic House of Prayer. Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 58 years, Shirley S. Thompson; daughters and sons-in-law, Patricia and Theo Furrow, Linda and Gary Flora, of Boones Mill, Sharon and Tommy Young, Rebecca and Phillip Young, of Rocky Mount; grandchildren, Alexander and Samantha Young; greatgrandchildren, Bailey Furrow, Brooke and Seth Young; brothers, B.T. Thompson Jr. and wife, Mildred, of Rocky Mount, Bobby Thompson and wife, Glenda, of Ferrum; sisters, Christine Ramsey and husband, T.C., of Roanoke, Lorraine Pagans and husband, Oscar Wayne, of Union Hall, Joyce Bernard and husband, Harold, of Rocky Mount; numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted from Flora Funeral Chapel 11 a.m. Tuesday with the Rev. Bud Nichols officiating. Interment will follow in Maple Grove Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Ferrum Volunteer Fire Department, c/o Chief Darryl Shively, 95 Shively Road, Ferrum, Va. 24088 or Ferrum Rescue Squad, c/o Captain Lisa McCaul, 1392 Jamison Mill Road, Henry, Va. 24102. Friends may call after 3 p.m. Monday with his family receiving friends 7 to 9 p.m. at Flora Funeral Service, Rocky Mount, and other times at the family home, 325 Sawmill Road, Ferrum, Va. 24088, www.florafuneralservice.com.
