Edward Umberger Obituary

Edward B. Umberger, 87, of Vinton, Va., departed this life on Sunday, December 20, 2009 to be with the Lord. He was born in Roanoke the fifth son of the late Debbie Akers Umberger and Frank H. Umberger. He graduated from Jefferson High School in June 1940 and then served in World War II in the Army Air Corps and successfully completed training as a Bombardier. After service he worked at the VA Hospital prior to entering UVA and received a Business Degree in February 1953. Ed worked for Frigidaire Division of GM a number of years and later the Williams Companies of Tulsa, Okla. from where he retired. He returned to Roanoke in 1988 after the passing of his first wife, Lois DeMahy Umberger, of New Orleans, La. He subsequently met and married Irene Jacobson Minter Umberger. Irene passed away March 26, 2007. Ed was also predeceased by his stepdaughter, Myra Cooper, of New Orleans and three brothers, James H. Umberger, Frank E. Umberger and William A. Umberger, all of Roanoke, Va. He is survived by a stepson, Gary Minter of North Carolina; stepgrandson, Stewart Minter, of Wilmington, N.C. stepson-in-law, Royce Cooper and stepgrandson, Royce Cooper, Jr., both of Mississippi; step granddaughter, Wendy Dorberth, of Elmore, Al. He is also survived by two brothers, Randolph Umberger and Paul Umberger; also twelve nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday, December 23, 2009 at Oakey's North Chapel with the Rev. Brent Williams officiating. There will be no graveside services. Mr. Umberger will be interred at Cedar Lawn Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to a charity of your choice. The family will be receiving friends from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, December 22, 2009 at Oakey's North Chapel, 540-362-1237.
