With Bob's passing our "Piedmont Family" becomes a little smaller, but it also re-kindles fond memories of a man who helped build that "Family" and made you proud to be a part of it. He will truly be missed and not forgotten.
My sympathy and prayers to you and your family.

Sue,
I am so sorry to hear of the loss of your Bob. I had the pleasure of working with Bob for a number of years prior to the merger. He will always be a part of my fond Piedmont memories. Every pilot has a "Bob Welfare Story." He touched many lives. Bob was one of our best! My deepest sympathy to the family.

I met Bob for the first time when I was new hire with Piedmont Airlines. (1967) I had been flying for Piemont Aviation for about a year in ORF but knew nothing about the interworkings of the airline in INT.
I was now based in ROA and had taken a Martin 404 ferry trip to INT. I was hoping to be based back in ORF. (My home town) I was told to see "Welfare" for my request. I didn't realize that Piedmont had such a thing. I entered the Welfare department and ask the Gentleman on the other side of the counter if I was in the correct office to talk to the person in charge of "Welfare."
After being given a very strange look, he said, " You are looking at the Welfare!" He said, "I am Bob Welfare" and I turned cherry red. Over the years he kidded me about the faux pas in good fun.
You will be missed Bob.
