Eugene Smith Obituary

Mr. Eugene F. (Gene) Smith, 91, of Barefoot Bay, Fla., died on Wednesday, December 23, 2009, at Sebastian River Medical Center, Sebastian, Fla. He was born in Forest City, N.C., and lived many years in Salem, Va., before retiring to Barefoot Bay, Fla. He received a bachelor's degree in agriculture from Berea College, Berea, Ky. Prior to retirement, Mr. Smith worked for the Jewel Tea Company in Salem, Va., for many years. He served in the United States Army during World War II in the U.S. Army Signal Corps and was the recipient of the Purple Heart. He was a member of Sebastian United Methodist Church, Sebastian, Fla. Survivors include his wife of 67 years, Virginia Smith, of Barefoot Bay, Fla.; son, Doug and his wife, Sharon Smith, of Richmond, Va.; grandchildren, Allyson and her husband, Joseph Wagner, Mitchell and his wife, Amy Smith, and Madison Smith; and greatgrandchildren, Elizabeth Jordan Wagner and Christopher William Wagner. Memorial contributions may be made to Sebastian United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 780328, Sebastian, Fla. 32978 in memory of Eugene F. Smith. DEAREST VIRGINIA,
I DONT KNOW IF YOU REMEMBER FRED AND I FROM THE LEWIS GALE MEETINGS ON SATURDAY NIGHT, BUT WITH GREAT FONDNESS WE REMEMBER YOU AND GENE. WE WERE SO SORRY TO HEAR OF HIS PASSING IN DECEMBER. PLEASE KNOW YOU AND THE FAMILY ARE IN OUR THOUGHTS AND PRAYERS.
