Ruth Richardson Obituary

Ruth Lillian Mason Richardson, 93, of Roanoke, Va., passed away quietly in her sleep on Saturday, January 2, 2010. She was born on April 28, 1916, in Roanoke, Va., and was the daughter of the late Charlie and Mattie Mason. She was a graduate of Jefferson High School. She worked as a professional women's clothing buyer and model for Miller & Rhoads Department Store. She was later employed by the Roanoke City School System and Heartfelt, Inc., finally retiring in her mid-80s. She was a long-time member and supporter of Windsor Hills United Methodist Church where she sang in the choir for many years. She participated in numerous volunteer activities, including working at Lewis Gale Hospital, Blue Ridge Mental Health, R.A.M. and "Meals on Wheels." She was preceded in death by her husband, Frank R. Richardson, a prominent realtor and former co-owner of the Green Market, Salem, Va.; brother, Charlie T. Mason; and sisters, Helen Bryant and Kathleen Wysong. She is survived by a sister, Alice Holland and her husband Troy; her two sons, Frank R. "Chip" Richardson II and his wife, Renay, and David W. Richardson and his wife, Dawn; and three grandchildren, Samantha, Tyler, and Andrew. A graveside service will be conducted 10 a.m. on Wednesday, January 6, 2010, at Sherwood Memorial Park. The funeral service will follow at 11 a.m. at Windsor Hills United Methodist Church, with the Reverend Thomas Lee officiating. The family will receive friends on Tuesday, January 5, 2010, from 6 to 8 p.m. at John M. Oakey & Son, Salem. The Richardson family is being served by John M. Oakey & Son, Salem, Va., 540-389-5441.
