Virginia Phillips Obituary

Virginia Welch Phillips died quietly in her sleep on Tuesday, January 12, 2010, at Brandermill Woods retirement home in Midlothian, Va. Virginia was 89 years old and was the last surviving member of her generation. Virginia was the beloved daughter of Stanley W. Welch and Gertrude Martin Welch, of Roanoke, Va. She was predeceased by her parents; her husband, George Phillips; and her brother, William Martin Welch. Virginia grew up in the Roanoke, Va., School system graduating from Jefferson High School. She went on to William and Mary where she studied English. Virginia and George were devoted members of Raleigh Court Presbyterian Church in Roanoke where she taught Sunday School and served on many committees giving generously of her time. Virginia Phillips was a kind and thoughtful person. She was quick to offer a helping hand to those in need. She had a wonderful sense of humor and enjoyed her long and fruitful life to its fullest. She was greatly loved by her family and many friends. There will be a brief memorial service celebrating Virginia's life 1 p.m. on Friday, January 29, 2010, at the chapel of the Raleigh Court Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Tupper Garden officiating.
