Virginia Martin Obituary

Virginia Walters Frye (Genny) Martin, 80, of Christiansburg, Va., died Friday at Carilion New River Valley Medical Center. She had been a resident of English Meadows Retirement Center for the past sixteen years. She was born on March 15, 1929, in Rogers, Va. She was a graduate of Pulaski High School. She was the daughter of the late Archie Mosby Walters and Willie Elizabeth Miles Akers. Genny lived in Giles County where she worked as a secretary at Giles High School and as secretary to the superintendent of schools. She moved to Roanoke, Va., where she worked as a bookkeeper for Dewey Robertson and Associates. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Marvin L. Martin. She is survived by her daughters, Sandra (Sandy) Smith, Roanoke, Theresa (Terry) Beckner and husband, Jimmy Beckner, Ripplemead; son, Dennis Frye, Reidsville, N.C. She has five grandchildren, William Scott Fuller, Mankato, Minn., Robert (Andy) Fuller, Staunton, Wesley Beckner, Ripplemead, Ben and Lauren Frye, Roanoke. She also has stepgrandchildren, Cassie Beckner McIlwain, Salem, and Bryan Beckner. She has three great-granddaughters, Mary Alex Fuller, Marion, Bella Snow and Fauna Marie Fuller of Staunton. She is also survived by sisters, Maxine White, Pleasant Garden, N.C., Shirley Coppedge, Crewe, Ava Lou Thornton, Christiansburg and one brother, Carlos Lee Akers. The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. on Sunday, January 17, 2010. A funeral service will be held at 4 p.m. on Sunday, January 17, 2010 at the Horne Funeral Home Chapel, with Logan Schalk officiating. Interment will be held on Monday, January at 1 p.m., at Sunset Cemetery, Christiansburg, Va. In lieu of flowers please make donations to English Meadows Retirement Center.
