Duncan Howard Obituary

Duncan Oaks Howard Farmington, Utah Duncan Oaks Howard passed away peacefully in his sleep early in the morning, Sunday, October 05, 2008.Duncan was born on December 27, 1985 to Troy Lyndon Howard and Sydnie Marie Oaks Howard. He attended Kaysville Elementary, Columbia Elementary, Farmington Elementary, Farmington Jr. High and graduated from Davis High School. He also participated in the Davis District STEPS program. Duncan has been our "Sunshine" for nearly 23 years. Although he was confined to a wheelchair all of his life due to Cerebral Palsy, he lived a fulfilling and amazing life. While Duncan's condition created challenges, it didn't prevent him from going on campouts, many family trips (including Nauvoo and Palmyra), Boy Scout Camps, boating trips with family friends, and even riding Space Mountain at Disneyland and much more. Duncan was known by many and touched countless lives with his indomitable spirit and his wonderful smile and sense of humor. His bedroom was filled with posters, photos and various other memorabilia from his life's experiences. He had the wonderful experience of participating in five High School musicals, which he treasured. Over the five years that he participated in the musical productions at Davis High, he was blessed with a special bond and relationship with his teachers and many classmates. Duncan's favorite color was orange. He wore an orange shirt every day, his wheelchair was orange, his bedroom was orange. He loved the color orange! He had a special relationship with Greyson, his only sibling. But he was surrounded by many cousins that were just as close as brothers and sisters and he cherished every moment that he could spend with them, which was often. A special part of his life was his niece, Londyn. In his eyes, she could do no wrong. She affectionately called him "Dunky". Duncan was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. His testimony of his Savior, Jesus Christ, was strong and unwavering. He was always extremely sensitive to spiritual situations. His desire to "choose the right" was constant and never failed. Duncan is survived by his parents, his brother and sister-in-law, Greyson Troy Howard (Oakley); his niece, Londyn, whom he adored; his grandmother, Carolee Oaks; his grandparents, Don and Geri Howard; and many dear aunts, uncles and cousins that were all very close to him and he loved very much. He was preceded in death by his grandfather, Tom Oaks. Funeral services will be held Thursday, October 9, 2008 at 11 a.m. at the Farmington North Stake Center, 729 W. Shepard Lane, Farmington, where friends and family are invited to visit from 9:00 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. prior to the services. A viewing will be held on Wednesday, October 8, 2008 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Russon Brothers Mortuary, 1941 N. Main, Farmington, Utah. A scholarship fund has been set up at Davis High School in memory of Duncan for outstanding seniors in the performing arts. Those wishing to donate can contact Davis High School's office.

His life profoundly influenced our children's lives - they adored him and loved being around him. His spirit just radiated love and joy! We are so sorry to hear of the passing of Duncan. We served with his grandparents in Nauvoo and have stopped in Farmington to visit with Carol.
Our thoughts and prayers are with you at this time and know that he is now in a better place, a place where he can run and walk, talk and sing and do everything that he couldn't do here on earth.

Thinking of Duncan brings an immediate smile to my face. Seeing him as a youngster, I remember thinking what an incredible spirit he was and how blessed your family must be to have this angel here on earth. Duncan had the Christlike qualities we all strive to attain. I know you will miss him terribly but please find comfort in the fact that he touched all our lives with his goodness.

Howard family,
I have so many memories of Duncan and was always touched by his spirit and his never ending happiness. I recall his spirit when Tory would bring him up to bear his testimony and as he passed the sacrament. Our family had many special times with Duncan as we took him on walks, watched him after school playing games and feeding him reeses and chocolate milk. He would laugh so hard. I will never forget the time we took him to meet Pres. Hinckley and the smile on his face. He has touched many lives!

Troy and Syd,
Duncan was such a special person. He always lit up a room with his smile! You two have been a wonderful example of unconditional love, self-less giving and care. Duncan was LOVED by so many and he touched lives in ways that, I'm sure, even he never knew. He loved to be with the family, it was written on his face. We're so sorry for your loss of your special, perfect son. Our hearts and thoughts and love go out to you all.
With love, Kent, Renel and Miles

Sydnie, my thoughts and prayers are with you and your family at this time. I had contact with Duncan from Elementary all the way through my Senior year. Duncan was a little ray of sunshine. He was an inspiration to everyone who met him. He touched my life. I had the pleasure of being his peer tutor in high school as well. Duncan always brought a smile to my face. I hope that I get to give him a big hug one day and dance and sing by his side. God be with you until we meet again Duncan.

Duncan's smile...honest, pure of heart. His only way to communicate, and yet we all knew what he said when he spoke in silence with his smile.Thank you for blessing my family by giving us the opportunity to know him! Our thoughts are with your family.

To The Howard's,

Words cannot describe my feelings.
We have shared many choice experiences and this shall be another one. Duncan has always had a special place in my heart. Some of my fondest memories of Duncan are when Meggan would sit in his lap to feed him. Watching Troy carry Duncan in a kick ball game. The obstacle course at the first extravaganza... And many more. Thanks for coming to ABQ last May. It was nice having Duncan in my home to share some time with him.
I know that as you look back the efforts to care for him seem painless. But the memories will always bring a smile to your face and heart. May your burden now become light by letting our Savior carry the load that you all have had for the last beautiful twenty two years. I love Duncan and I love you all.
