John Kelly Obituary

John Henry Kelly "It was marvelous." Our Dandan completed his final mission in a B-17 with a perfect landing into the arms of his Heavenly Father on October 10, 2007. John Henry Kelly was born January 23, 1922 to Lincoln Grant Kelly and Jane (Jenny) Emiline Reid in Salt Lake City. John attended East High where he played football, basketball, and doubles tennis. Proud to be a Sigma Nu and a Ute, he graduated from the U of U with a degree in Accounting. John married Katherine Lacy Shill (Kay) August 14, 1943. Two weeks later he left for training in the Air Force, becoming a ball turret gunner for the 413 Bomb Squad 96th Bomb group. He flew 33 combat missions over Germany in a B-17 and was awarded five Air Medals and the Distinguished Flying Cross. He joined his father's public accounting firm where he worked with his brother Spry and sister Kathlyn for most of his life. He finished his accounting career with Stayner and Co. He served as president of the National Association of Accountants. John gave over 60 years of Masonic service, was past director of the Royal Order of Jesters, and obtained the 32nd degree as a Scottish Rite Mason. An El Kalah Shriner, John received a Volunteer Star for his service hours at the Shriners Children's Hospital where he dearly loved all the patients. A golf enthusiast, he served as past president of the SL Country Club. John was a lover of life and of people. His infectious optimism, sense of humor, and generous spirit endeared him to everyone he met. He nurtured his many friendships through golf, tennis, and the infamous kelvod. John supported his two sons and nine grandchildren on LDS missions. Finally, at 84, he was converted and baptized a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. On July 3, 2007 he took his sweetheart of 64 years to the Bountiful Temple and was sealed for time and all eternity. He is survived by his wife, Kay, and his children, J. Scott (Kathy), Shannon (Jeff) Butler, and L. Kevin (Khaliel), 19 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren and nieces Colleen (Roger) Thompson and Karren (Doug) Hammer. We wish to thank all those who so compassionately attended to John at the VA Medical Center in room 2B-17. A viewing will be held Friday, Oct. 12, 6-8 pm at the Monument Park 1st Ward, 1005 S. 2000 East (Michigan Ave.) SLC. Funeral services will be held Sat. Oct. 13, 11 a.m. (viewing at 10 a.m.) at Monument Park 9th Ward, 1565 S. Foothill Dr. (Skyline Dr.) SLC. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to Shriner's Children's Hospital or Humanity Corps./ www. humanitycorps.org

It had been several years since I saw John at my clinic, but I thought about him from time to time, the last time just a day or two before I saw his obituary. He was one of my favorite patients. John was funny, brave, and a true gentleman. A visit from him brightened the day for the whole staff. We enjoyed hearing his exploits at sports, with family, and in the ball turret of a B-17. Condolences to the family.

In happy memory of John,
