Queen of Angels, Mother of Might

Brilliant star of radiant light

Make my life with virtue bright
Helen Haddock, 1941 SHREVEPORT, LA - Helen Veronica Haddock Sadow died of kidney and congestive heart failure at her residence in Shreveport, LA, on Mar. 17, 2009. She was born Mar. 31, 1923 in Wellesley, MA. She grew up in Needham, MA and suffered the tragic loss of her father Francis Oliver Haddock when he, a police officer for Needham, was shot and killed incident to a bank robbery, less than two months before her eleventh birthday.

A graduate of Sacred Heart High School of Newton, she subsequently became a registered nurse graduated by the Carney School of Nursing in 1944 and worked for the then-U.S. Public Health Service in locations as varied as New York City, Buffalo, and Savannah, GA. Returning to Needham in 1951, she worked in area hospitals while pursuing a B.S. in Nursing at Boston College, graduating in 1953 whereupon she enlisted in the U.S. Air Force. Stationed at Hamilton Air Force Base, San Francisco, she met and subsequently married on Veterans Day, 1955, Ronald Dennis Sadow.

After they were discharged from active duty, she worked in a variety of private sector nursing positions until about a year before the birth of her children. After they had departed for college she moved to Monroe, LA in 1985 where she lived until 2008. There, she was an active parishioner of Jesus the Good Shepherd Catholic Church and member of the Newcomers Club. The last year of her life she lived in Shreveport. Throughout her life she loved reading and enjoyed contemplation about and discussion of subjects ranging from history to politics to literature to philosophy, although her favorites were religious history, philosophy, and theology.

She was predeceased by her husband of 49 years Ronald Dennis Sadow, her sisters Mary Florence Haddock Barnicle, Dorothy Frances Haddock Pratt, Phyllis Teresa Haddock Murphy; her mother Helen Frances Callanan Haddock; and her father Francis Oliver Haddock. She is survived by her son Jeffrey Dennis Sadow and his wife Deshae Elizabeth Lott Sadow of Bossier City, LA and her son Jonathan Carl Sadow of Austin, TX.

In lieu of flowers, donations are recommended to the Cardinal Newman Society, 9415 West Street, Manassas, VA 20110. I was very blessed to be Mrs Sadows nurse during her last few weeks, and I will never be the same because of her. I enjoyed our conversations about her northern days, her patients, and her twin boys. Im sure we will all miss the light she brings to any room. She was one beautiful lady with a great amount of wisdom, character, and lots of stamina. She was still caring and helping others before she left. I wish her family the best and want you to know how special she was to other staff and myself.

The Final Salute

“Brothers in Arms”, Military men and women down through the centuries, have traditionally exchanged “Hand Salutes” as a sign of recognition and as a way to render courtesy and respect one to another.

This “Hand Salute” is the last that we shall render to Hellen Veronica Haddock Sadow our Sister in Arms. To her family it symbolizes the love and respect that we have for Helen. And to Helen it is rendered as a symbol of honor and gratitude to thank her for the devoted and selfless service she rendered to her country while serving in the U.S Air Force. Helen we bid you a sad farewell. You will be dearly missed from among our ranks. Be at ease. Rest in Peace.

On behalf of the 1,409 members of Lowe-McFarlane Post 14 of the American Legion in Shreveport, Louisiana, I extend our sympathies and our condolences to Helen’s family and loved ones.
