A former teacher of Christopher M. Kurth said the soldier returned to school twice during leave from his service as a turret gunner who escorted convoys in Iraq. "Every time he came back from Iraq, he would show photos, talk to the kids about what it was like," said Glennon Cates. "He really, really gave back to the community. He really believed in what he was doing." Kurth, 23, of Alamogordo, N.M., died June 4 in Kirkuk of wounds suffered when his vehicle was struck by an anti-tank grenade. He was a 2005 high school graduate and was assigned to Fort Hood. Linda Carr, his former principal, called Kurth "a bright spot" who served his country well. Kurth was on his second tour to Iraq and was awarded a Purple Heart in April after a shrapnel injury, family friend Dane Brown said. A longtime friend, Jorge Gallegos, said he met Kurth when he was 13 years old. "He always made sure everyone was taken care of before himself," Gallegos said. "He loved fighting for his country." "He loved everything over there and he liked to help everybody," said wife, Robin. "He''s my biggest hero."
