So many years have passed but the memory of Peter and all the goodness he showed others remains bright. Mama and Boris were fortunate indeed when Peter rescued them off the streets of a war torn city and they were fortunate again when a devoted sister made the decision to bring them to the USA. Carey - we hope that things are going well for you and the family and that the months of the pandemic have seen you keep healthy. If you ever wish to say hi you can do it through this site. I've emailed you on a few occasions but they always bounce back - I assume that, like me, you may have changed addresses from time to time. Take care of yourself and keep well and happy.

(for December 25)
Honouring the memory of Peter Neesley, and sent, as ever, with the hope that all those who love him have managed smiles along with the understandable sadness as they reach another anniversary of his passing. Christmas Day seems a fitting time of the year to remember this good man, one whose life made a difference to so many people, and to two dogs in particular. 'Mama' and 'Boris' are a testament to his caring nature, and their presence in America, (against all the odds), a striking example of the tenacity and love of his sister Carey.
Our love to the Neesley family and big hugs to Mama and Boris.

On the 8th anniversary of passing, I stop for awhile and reflect on the man Peter was. I will always be grateful for his service and sacrifice for our country.

(for the 25th. I'm sorry this is late - we had no internet access yesterday)
Honouring Peter, and remembering all those who loved him and who love him still - we hope that there were smiles mixed in there yesterday as you shared special memories of this fine young American - one whose compassion for his fellow humans was matched by his love and kindness to animals - most especially Mama and Boris, whose lives he changed forever.
Sending our thoughts across the miles to Carey and Peter's family.

It's already Christmas Day here in Australia Carey - and we re proud to honor Peter's memory - son, brother, friend, soldier and compassionate man (and never forgetting the love and care he gave to "Mama" and "Boris" - two humble dogs whose very lives were changed, forever, by their good fortune in having Peter as their friend). We wish the Neesley family and all who were fortunate enough to know Peter in his lifetime, every blessing this Christmas as they continue their journey.

I was thinking about Peter tonight as I do every Christmas. Three years ago I was the officer in charge of patriot duty on Christmas day in Baghdad. Patriot duty is where we honor the fallen as we place them on a plane to come home for the final time. More soldiers and airmen took part that day to honor Peter than I had seen duty my tour.

I know your pain
I know your sorrow
It feels as though there's no tomorrow
It's Christmastime

In a very few days it will be the anniversary of the passing of this young American and we take time to thank him for all that he did for his country, and for the two dogs he befriended back in Iraq. Those dogs are now living happy and healthy with his family - a living link to the son, brother and uncle they miss so much. Peter, your family will spend another Christmas without your presence, but you are still loved, still cared for and still a very special, warm and kind man - nothing will ever change that.
to the Neesley family - our good wishes for this difficult time of the year and with the hope that 2010 brings sunnier days for you.
A big hug to 'Mama' and 'Boris' please.

Peter - you are remembered always.I see from Carey's note here that they are trying to do as you would wish and live their lives in the best way possible - it's a fine way for them to honor your memory. Your Mom sent us a wonderful photo of 'Mama' and 'Boris' - looking sleek, glossy, happy and very much at home in the Michigan snow :-) Rest well Peter - you are loved, honored and remembered for all the fine qualities you displayed in life and they remain as true now as then.

To my dear little brother,
It was one year ago yesterday that I said good-bye to you for the last time. I laid my head on your chest and begged and bargined for more time. Time for you to experience everything you deserved. To have the family you always wanted, the daughter you wished for. Not a day has passed that the tears have not fallen. The reality of before Christmas morning 2007 and after it have been devestating. It seems like just yesterday we spoke last and a thousand years ago all at once. You believed in me in a way I never could, and you brought me hope and laughter when I needed it most. I am struggling to survive in this world without you. I miss you so much, but I know you are near me. I feel you all the time and that helps. Your dogs are doing great. They are healthy and happy. The bring us all the unconditional love that we are missing from you. Your nephew misses you too. But he is strong, something he learned from you. Until the time comes for us to meet again, you are always in my heart.
I love you Babe!
Your big sister
The Broken Chain
We little knew that day. God was going to call your name. In life we loved you dearly. In death we do the same. It broke our hearts to lose you. You did not go alone. For part of us went with you. The day that God called you home. You left us beautiful memories. Your love is still our guide. And though we cannot see you. You are always at our side. Our family chain is broken. And nothing seems the same. But as God calls us one by one. The chain will link again.

Holding you all in my thoughts and prayers.
The Wind on The Downs
“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”
(Written by Marian Allen during World War l )
Two lines that I wish you to keep near your heart…….
“You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe”
I did not know Peter, but I am remembering
his service and sacrifice. He is my hero. !

The Other Side
i'm over on the other side
where life and death softly divide.
left my skin and bones behind
now i'm over on the other side.
can you feel me there with you?
my breath is gone but i'm not through.
loved you then and i still do
from over on the other side.
i can fly. really fly.
below the earth ... all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.
it's good here on the other side.
the sweetest songs...the bluest skies.
thank you for the tears you cried
but it's good here on the other side.
i can fly. really fly. below the earth...all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side
the world is smaller than a needle's eye.
where life and death softly divide.
when you leave your skin and bones behind
i'll be waiting on the other side.
i can fly. really fly. below the earth ... all through the sky.
go tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

Peter - so much has happened in twelve months. You would be proud of the way that your family has coped this past year. They miss you so much but they honor your life every day - they support one another and of course, looking after 'the kids' who are such a link to you is a comfort. Your Mom sent us a wonderful photo of "Mama" and "Boris" looking sleek, shiny and content, in the Michigan snow no less !! They are unrecognisable as the folorn little bundles of fur that you rescued in Iraq and I know that you would be thrilled to see how happy they are - happy and safe for the rest of their lives. God Bless you Peter - your love, your big heart and your kindness to everyone you met will always be remembered.

December is upon us and I wanted to take this time to express our families gratitude to all of you who have offeredyour kind words and prayersfor Peter and our family through the guest book. To say the least it has been a difficult and painful year for us all. After much time and training Peters dogs, Mama and Boris are adjusting and happy loving dogs. But grass, rain and snow are still very strange to them and sometimes I think they are a little "homesick". The Army has been very helpfulduring this year. This is not the same Army the soldiers of the Viet Nam era knew. I want all those who have helped to know they are appreciated. Your kindness and giving spirt is felt by us all. Sadly, the dying continues. Over a thousand soldiers since Peter. A thousand new rivers of tears for our families. It is more than anyone can bare a painful shroud of grief shadowing over us all. Peters death has left a great Hole in my soul which I know now can never be filled Our family is moving on as we know we must for as so beautifully expressed by Kahil Gibran It is as it has always been, that loves knows not is own depth untill the hour of separation. I met Pete during EML. I found out we both stayed at COB Callahan, and Pete, another buddy and I linked up and travelled home from Iraq together, despite being from different divisions. I didn't know him long, but I know he was one of those genuinely "good people" you often hear about, but rarely meet. I didn't find out about his death until today, reading an article in the Army Times. He is one more face I'll take away from Iraq, knowing that I'll never be able to greet again.

Those who served so honorable
Your life was forever altered
While I’m home safe and free
I stand with grateful admiration
I stand respectful and so proud
I know I’m only a civilian
And I don’t even know if it’s allowed.
But I salute you; allow me the honor
to salute you with permission let me say
Even though I hold no rank know that from my heart
My humble gratitude comes from the deepest part.
I salute you.

I just read the story about Sgt. Neesley and couldn't help but cry. I didn't know him, but from what I read he was a wonderful man. I printed off his picture and the article about how he cared for Mama and Boris. I keep it near because it is such an inspiring story. The world needs more people like Sgt. Neesley. I searched Peter's name after reading the dog adoption story. How kind! I'm sure he was even greater than what we gather from the stories.
I just want his family to know that I have a 3 yr old daughter and an 8 yr old son, who both are fascinated with the service men and women who represent our beautiful country.
We talk everyday about their roles and why.
I want to say Thank You to Peter and his family for supporting, strengthening and protecting our country.
Someday my son may chose to serve and I will support that choice.
If it wasn't for people like Peter, we couldn't have a good life or land we could ever call our own.
Our service people are the most noble of all.
~Thank You~

To the family of my fallen friend, Pete was my Sgt, my team leader and my friend.
I am still finding this very difficult to write and to express my grief of the loss of Pete. Everyday, I wake up and still look for him when I come to start my shift. I can still hear his voice. I still yearn for the laughter that I expected to get from him, everyday! Again, I'm still finding this a hard group of words to put together. I am the soldier who, along with Sgt Dan Haynes, who took care of the dogs. I am the one who ensured that they were both taken into custody and found their way into the hands that took them to his family. I have seen the news photos and tears come to my eyes to see them with his family.
Pete was my Sgt, team leader and friend. I miss him everyday and will continue to miss him. I apologize for not adding anything sooner, but the loss of my friend is still a heavy burden on my heart
To know that the dogs are now with his family is a heartwarming and uplifting of my spirit.
I express my sympathy and heart to you, his family. Pete truly is missed here in Iraq by Apache Troop
Not a day goes by that he is not talked about and grieved.
Again, my condolences and tears and heartache are with you.
I miss you my friend! Everyday, I find a reason to laugh because of you! I miss hearing "JULIO!" on our radios making some kind of joke or comment that would get me to just stop in my tracks and make me laugh until it hurt.
My heart, my soul, my sympathies, and love go out to the Neesley family.
Forever your soldier and friend Sgt!

To the Neesley family,
I am so very sorry for the loss of your son, Peter. He is a true American HERO and he will never be forgotten. I know your pain that your feeling and I know it's so hard to understand WHY my son but God only knows why and I know that our Heroes are in a much better place. I lost my son PFC Andrew Nelson on Dec. 25th, 2006 and that was the worst day of my life, but I have tried really hard to move forward and you will be able to also, with all of our memories and stories that we have and with God giving us the strength we need. We don't want to be in this group of Gold Star Parents but we are and we can all be here for each other, please contact me if you want to talk. I read the story about the dogs that were brought to you that your son loved so much, I'm so glad you have them and have something that Peter loved so much, a piece of him. God does take care of us. God Bless you and your family.

I've just seen the story of this young man's devotion to his dogs in Iraq on the Best Friends web site. At such a sad time, I sincerely hope and believe that Peter's kind hearted actions, and those of all who worked to bring the dogs home, will help you. He was clearly a compassionate boy who grew into a caring man, and he's left you many wonderful memories which I hope will bring you comfort at this time.
With kindest wishes from one of the many who wish you well. God Bless you Peter.

Father we entrust our brother Peter to your mercy. You loved him greatly in this life: now that he is freed from all its cares, give him happiness and peace forever. Welcome him now into paradise where there will be no more sorrow, no more weeping or pain, but only peace and joy with Jesus your Son, and the Holy Spirit forever and ever.
May God hold Peter in the palm of His hand. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. My deepest sympathy.

The Broken Chain
We little knew that day God was going to call your name. In life we loved you dearly. In death,
we do the same. It broke our hearts to lose you. You did not go alone. For part of us went with
you. The day God called your home. You left us beautiful memories. Your love is still our guide.
And though we cannot see you. You are always at our side. Our family chain is broken. And
nothing seems the same. But as God calls us one by one. The chain will link again.

With the deepest regret, I have just learned of the death of Sergeant Neesley. As a Vietnam Veteran and the State Chaplain of the Georgia Society, Sons Of The American Revolution, I speak for our President, Charlie A. Newcomer, III and the more than 1,400 SAR members around the State of Georgia in humbly expressing the condolences of a grateful Society. Wrapped in the integrity of service to our nation and the inestimable values of duty, honor and country, your American hero stood on a wall of freedom for us all. This precious life, lived and lost in love of America, epitomized every attribute of patriotism the Sons Of The American Revolution hold dear. And, as Americans, we could never repay the debt we owe ..!! Nor the debt we owe you… the family of one of America's best ...!!!
