Jonathan L. Smith Obituary

The terrorist attacks of 9-11 awakened America that we were again at war. Jonathan was spurred by these events and then made his decision to serve his country. Though he was still young and in school, he was mature enough to recognize the Pearl Harbor of his time. He enlisted on August 12, 2002 and was stationed at Camp Lejuene, N.C. with Bravo Company, 2nd Assault Amphibian Battalion. He was deployed to Iraq in Feburay of 2005. I remember Jonathan's phone calls home. He was surprised and pleased at the friendly nature of the Iraqi people he met. He said that they seemed to appreciate what the Americans were doing for them.

Jonathan's unit began going on missions in May, then in early June they were operating north of Fallujah, near the small town of Karmah. The Battalion had been sucessful in unearthing several caches of insurgents' weapons hidden near an old rock quarry. On June 6th, Jonathan volunteered to go on a re-supply convoy back to base camp. On the return trip into the field, the convoy came under attack. A IED hidden on the roadside struck the truck Jonathan was in, mortally wounding him. Jonathan died forty-five minutes later.

Jonathan was my only son. The void of his loss will never be filled. My wife and I are not bitter; there are many more grieving families, and we know are not alone. We remain very proud of Jonathan's service. He died on a day known for heroes, June 6th, 2005, the sixty-first anniversary of Normandy's D-Day invasion.

Jonathan loved the movies and was in to seeing the latest releases. I remember telling him of a story in the news; some Hollywood actor had said something really stupid and anti-military. His response, a shrug of the shoulder and a "so what" expression. He didn't care about their politics, he just liked their movies. He knew what he was all about, and their words meant nothing to him. I think Jonathan was wise beyond his mere twenty-two years. He had that part of life figured out.

"I feel how weak and fruitless must be any word of mine which should attempt to beguile you from the grief of a loss so overwhelming. But I cannot refrain from tendering you the consolation that may be found in the thanks of the republic they died to save. I pray that our heavenly father may assuage of your bereavement, and leave you only the cherished memory of the loved and lost, and the solemn pride that must be yours to have laid so costly a sacrifice upon the altar of freedom." Dear Jonathan,

In your eyes, I see the grace of a young man and a compassionate soul. As a Marine, I know you are brave. But what I see is a gentle soul, someone who retained his humanity during an inhumane time, and this is what we shall miss about you. May your sacrifice give us the strength to find alternatives to war, to killing and to death. Your courage, grace and compassion are in us always.

May your memory be a comfort to your mom, dad and family. And may your memory be a blessing, always.

Jonathan, If the promise of a heaven is true then you most surely be there. I would like to believe you could somehow hear these words.
Jonathan you gave your life and all your tomorrows for our freedom. Your unselfish service and sacrifice has brought a breath of freedom to millions of Iraqi people, men, women, children and those yet to be born in a new Iraq. Those peoples thank you, America and the rest of the free world thank you. As your dad I love you for it.
Your name will never die, I will keep you alive thru me. Your service will always be remembered. If I had to give you up, to be so very proud, what better way than to have my son as a part of the Corps' lore and legend. Jonathan just like the devildogs of 1918 and the leathernecks who landed on south Pacific islands of yet unheard of names. The Marines of Fallujah are now part of a glorious history. As a dad of one of these young men, I'm so very proud.
America will forever remain strong and free because of her warrior sons and daughters who go forth to fight for all that is right. Jonathan you fought the good fight.
You live on in the memory of all who knew you. You live on in the hearts of all who loved you. I'm glad to know that I was among those who loved you most.

Rest in peace my precious son,
dad

Holding you all in my thoughts and prayers.

The Wind on The Downs

“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”

(Written by Marian Allen during World War l )

Two lines that I wish you to keep near your heart…….

“You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe”

I did not know Jonathan, but I am remembering
his service. He is my hero. !

The Other Side

i'm over on the other side
where life and death softly divide.
left my skin and bones behind
now i'm over on the other side.

can you feel me there with you?
my breath is gone but i'm not through.
loved you then and i still do
from over on the other side.

i can fly. really fly.
below the earth ... all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

it's good here on the other side.
the sweetest songs...the bluest skies.
thank you for the tears you cried
but it's good here on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth...all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side

the world is smaller than a needle's eye.
where life and death softly divide.
when you leave your skin and bones behind
i'll be waiting on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth ... all through the sky.
go tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

There is nothing that I can say or do to take away the pain or bring you peace in your time of sorrow, but I will offer your family my heart felt condolences. I also offer you my prayers that in time the pain will easy and the memories of your HERO will carry you through each day and night. I want to thank your HERO, for his/her selfless act of becoming a member of the armed forces, his/her willingness to defend the United States of America, all that we hold sacred and for the sacrifice that will forever be etched in the memories of all those who knew him/her. Though tears can never bring him/her back, we hope that our tears express our gratitude for the sacrifice that he/she made and our sorrow at his/her passing. I believe for every fallen HERO there is a star shining brightly up above to remind us of the precious gift we were given.

Your mission on earth is complete and you are now a member of GOD’s Heavenly armed forces. Stand down brave warrior and take your rightful place in Heaven with all the HEROES who have passed before.

I made a special promise to LE RON A. WILSON (KIA on 07/06/07) on the day he was laid to rest as I touched his coffin, that I would never forget him nor would I forget those that gave their lives for our country before him, with him and after him and so when I came across www.legacy.com, I thought what a great way to keep my promise to Le Ron, so I will continue to leave tributes in each guest book until the day there is no longer the need to leave these tributes to a FALLEN HERO.

REST IN PEACE, HERO, YOU WILL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN!!

In time, there will come a day when the tears of sorrow will softly flow into sighs of remembrance. Your heart will begin to heal itself.

Grieving will be interrupted by episodes of joy; and you will hear the whisper of hope.

There will come a day when you will welcome the pangs of remembrance as a sun shower of the soul; a turning of the tide; the promise of peace.

There will come a day when you will risk loving, go on believing,

and treasure the remembering.

Psalm 23

1

The LORD is my shepherd, I shall not be in want.

2

He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters,

3

He restores my soul. He guides me in paths of righteousness for his name's sake.

4

Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.

5

You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies. You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows.

6

Surely goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the LORD forever.

This is a verse that I have found to be comforting to me during my husbands death. Remember that when it seems that no one else is round, God is still there with you! And he will be your rock!

My daughter,McKaLyne, and I send our heartfelt sympathy for your loss! God Bless this warrior, God Bless those whom serve freedom's cause! They are our true HERO's!!!!

Dear friends: I was born and raised in Oden Ridge just down the road from you. My aunt, Margaret Childress, lives next to you and my Cousin, Jeff Adkins, is building the home across the road from you. My Aunt called me when your son was killed. It broke my heart and I cried because I know how it must have hurt. I am still praying for you and your family. My son, Stephen, just returned home from Iraq, and when I hugged him at the airport in Memphis, Tn, I thought of you. We are very grateful to your son and will never forget what he did. He is after all, one of American's sons, one of Alabama's sons and one of Eva's sons. He was foremost YOUR son and when I return home soon, maybe I can visit with you. Gerri

Garry, Donna, & Adrienne,

God loaned you a wonderful son and brother. Now he has called Jonathan home to be with him, and I know that your hearts are breaking, but take comfort in the fact that God is in control, and He is there for you to comfort you. You are fortunate that he was such a good, caring, loving, young man, and all who knew him have wonderful things to say about him. We thank you for the sacrifice that he made for all of us. He truly believed in what he was doing, and went willingly and lovingly. The good he did during his short lifetime is so outstanding. Jonathan was a young man who once you met him, had a profound effect on your life, and you cannot forget him.

Hannah is so proud to tell people about her cousin "the Marine" who gave his life for his country. As I was watching the video of your memorial that the Marines gave you in Iraq, I couldn't help but to cry when the roll was called and you did not answer. I do not fully understand why such tragedies happen in life and how people are supposed to go on as if their life as not been altered in some way. However,I do know that your death was not in vain and that your memory will live on in the hearts of everyone who loved you. We miss you and Love you.

May God Bless your family. Your son was very brave and I will always be thankful that there are brave men like your son who are willing to pay the ultimate price so that myself and my children can be free to live and not be in constant fear for our lives. God Bless.

From a former soldier:

Your passing is not in vane.

The work you have started, will be completed.

The world was a better place because you were in it.

And the world has lost an invaluable prize with your passing.

May you find peace and a shade tree to rest under now. When you are not guarding the Gates of Heaven.

Words will never bring our fallen Brothers back, or make the pain more bearable. I never met your son, your brother, but I will never forget your sacrifice. I will say your son's name out loud whenever I can, and will tell his story along with others who have sacrificed so much so that we can enjoy our freedom. To remind me that Heroes are everywhere and live on forever in the hearts of those who loved them. God Bless You, Semper FI I will never forget
