Petty Officer 2nd Class Cesar O. Baez

Cesar O. Baez Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jun. 17, 2005.
While away at war, Cesar O. Baez got a care package with an item that would change his life: a blue baby bootie. The father of three young girls was going to have a fourth child in September, "a baby boy," said his father, also Cesar. "He really wanted a baby boy." "He called everybody in the family," said Bernardina Baez, his mother. "He was so happy." Baez, 37, of Pomona, Calif., died June 15 near Ramadi, Iraq. He was assigned to Camp Pendleton. Baez had served 10 years in the Navy after serving four years in the Marine Corps. He got his diploma from Pomona Adult School and hoped to eventually become a doctor. Baez is survived by his wife, Rosanna, and daughters, Isabel, 8, Sydney, 5, and Suzy, 4. "I will miss my son more than words can express," said his father. "He was a great child, hero and father." "My son will live on through his son," his mother said.

Cesar,
I have an interesting story for you... When you were serving in Iraq in 2005, so was I. You didn't know me, and I didn't know you. I was deployed to Baghdad International Airport and am active duty Airman for the U.S. Air Force. Towards the end of my tour (December 2006), I decided to acquire a memory bracelet, much similar to a POW/MIA bracelet. When I submitted my order, I stated I don't care who it is and what service they are in, I just want to remember one of our fallen who gave their ultimate sacrifice. Well, the silver bracelet the company sent me had your name on it "PO2 Cesar O. Baez, USN 15 JUN 05 IRAQ" I want you to know from one service member to another, you will never be forgotten. Ever since that bracelet arrived to me in 2006, I wear it every single day (on duty and off). I constantly am asked who the name is on my bracelet and I tell everyone that you were my fallen brother. So, rest in peace brother, and know that even complete strangers are remembering you and paying respects to you and your family on a daily basis.

With much love,
Master Sergeant Ernie Rude

We miss you Doc. The Marines who were fortunate enough to have served with you will continue to share your legacy. Before witnessing it for myself, I used to hear stories from Vietnam and World War Veterans of the selfless actions of others during times of war. I am now one of those guys who shares your story at every available opportunity. Rest assured that you will not be forgotten.

Holding you all in my thoughts and prayers.

The Wind on The Downs

“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”

(Written by Marian Allen during World War l )

Two lines that I wish you to keep near your heart…….

“You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe”

I did not know Cesar, but I am remembering
his service in both the Navy
and the Marine Corp.
He is my hero. !

The Other Side

i'm over on the other side
where life and death softly divide.
left my skin and bones behind
now i'm over on the other side.

can you feel me there with you?
my breath is gone but i'm not through.
loved you then and i still do
from over on the other side.

i can fly. really fly.
below the earth ... all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

it's good here on the other side.
the sweetest songs...the bluest skies.
thank you for the tears you cried
but it's good here on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth...all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side

the world is smaller than a needle's eye.
where life and death softly divide.
when you leave your skin and bones behind
i'll be waiting on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth ... all through the sky.
go tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

To my cousin Cesar; Happy Veteran's Day and as you being a former Marine; Happy 232nd Birthday. I miss those days of our youth when we used to play at your house or grandma's. I'm sorry that I let so many years go by where neither one of us bothered to get in touch with another. I know that you were very much well loved and respected by your friends, your family, your wife and kids, mother and father, brothers and sisters, etc. You left this world way too early, but you will never be forgotten Cesar aka 'Piggy'

I hope everybody realizes the many hats a Hospital Corpsman wears. How much impact a Corpsman makes to the Marines. Petty Officer Baez I am sure was such a man. As an old FMF Corpsman I have great pride in Doc Baez, I hope that his family finds peace. Thank you Cesar for your service and valor.

There is nothing that I can say or do to take away the pain or bring you peace in your time of sorrow, but I will offer you and your family my heart felt condolences. I also offer you my prayers that in time the pain will easy and the memories of your HERO will carry you through each day and night. I want to thank your HERO, for his/her selfless act of becoming a member of the armed forces, his/her willingness to defend the United States of America, all that we hold sacred and for the sacrifice that will forever be etched in the memories of all those who knew him/her. Though tears can never bring him/her back, we hope that our tears express our gratitude for the sacrifice that he/she made and our sorrow at his/her passing. I believe for every fallen HERO there is a star shining brightly up above to remind us of the precious gift we were given.

Your mission on earth is complete and you are now a member of GOD’s Heavenly armed forces. Stand down brave warrior and take your rightful place in Heaven with all the HEROES who have passed before.

I made a special promise to LE RON A. WILSON, a dear family friend who joined the Army with three other friends, one of whom is my son (Le Ron was killed in action on 07/06/07 at the age of 18) on the day he was laid to rest as I touched his coffin, that I would never forget him nor would I forget those that gave their lives for our country before him, with him and after him and so when I came across www.legacy.com, I thought what a great way to keep my promise to Le Ron, so I will continue to leave tributes in each guest book until the day there is no longer the need to leave these tributes to a FALLEN HERO.

REST IN PEACE, HERO, YOU WILL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN!!

To All Parents
“I’ll lend you for a little time a child of Mine,” He said.
“For you to love the While he lives and mourn for when he’s dead.
It may be six or seven years, or 22 or three,
But will you, till I call him back, take care of him for me?
He’ll bring his charms to gladden you, and shall his stay be brief.
You’ll have his lovely memories as solace and relief.
“I cannot promise he will stay, since all from earth return,
But there are some lessons taught down there I want this child to learn.
I’ve looked the wide world over in my search for teachers true
And from the throngs that crowd life’s lanes I have selected you.
Now will you give him all your love, nor think the labor vain,
Nor hate Me when I come to take him back again?”
For all the joy Thy child shall bring, the risk of grief we’ll run.
We’ll shelter him with tenderness, we’ll love him while we may
And for the happiness we’ve known forever grateful stay;
But shall the angels call for him much sooner than we’ve planned.
We’ll brave the bitter grief that comes and try to understand.”

It's been 2 years since my brother has been gone from our presence. But he will always be in our hearts. Cesar was the best big brother any person could have. He was there for us just like the mail man, in the rain, snow, or in the heat of the day. His family was very important to him, even from child hood. He gave us many loving brotherly punches in the arms when we acted up, but had many encouring words for us. He always wanted us to do our best, and to have the best in life. He made sure the rest of us six were going to graduate high school, even if meant telling on us when we didn't go to school. Believe me, I'm a first hand witness. Cesar was hard as a rock on the outside, but a very caring person within. I believe that is why he touched so many people's lives along the way. I'm proud to say he was my brother. He will always be remembered. I thank the Lord always for blessing my family with Cesar And for being the great person that he was, I believe he is greatly being rewarded now. I know he is cheering us on now to continue moving on, and living our lives to the fullest.

"Until we meet again my brother."

I just recently learned of Caesar's death. I want to send my deepest sympathy to his family, especially Rosanna. I had the honor of serving with Cid and Rosanna as classmates in Hospital Corpsman School back in 1996. Both had served in the military a few years before becoming Corpsmen, and therefore were very influential in guiding me through my first few months in the Navy. Sadly, our paths never crossed again and I have since separated from the military. Caesar was our class leader. He lead by example every day and would not allow his classmates to put in less than what he himself put into whatever we were doing both in class and in physical training. He was tough as nails and so driven and goal oriented that you felt compelled to set your own goals high and work towards them no matter how much of a struggle it seemed to get there. In reading other guestbook posts, I feel honored to know that I was once in the presence of a true hero. As sad as it is that our battlefields have lost his protection, it is a comfort to know that his legacy lives on in those corpsmen he worked with whom ultimately learned from his living example. God bless you, Rosanna, and your children.

I served with Cid in the Marines in Okinawa in the early nineties. Although I did not know him well, I did know him as a fine and well respected Marine, liked throughout the unit, and I have no doubt he was an outstanding Corpsman. His intelligence, talent, and humor will be missed by all who knew him. I would like to express my sympathy to his family at this difficult time.

I fist met Sid on his 1st day in the Navy, which happened to be my 1st day in the Navy also. (13May96) We flew from LAX to Chicago together. I later met up with him in Corps School, then Field Medical Service School. Sid, like myself, was a little older than the majority of our classmates, so with that and the fact that we came from L.A. together, we formed a bond. He was there for me when I went through a tough time in my life and I have great sorrow that I wasn't there during the worst time in his life. He will forever be remembered by me and those he loved.

I am blessed to have known Cid, a true and brave hero. For many years we worked at NTC Branch Medical Clinic San Diego. I don't know many people that are as good at their job as he was. He took pride in every task done well. And what a character he was! Even on the most stressful days, I could always count on him for a laugh. He was always kind and supportive and I will never forget him. May God bless his family.

~ The Final Inspection ~

The sailor stood & faced God

which must always come to pass

He hoped his shoes were shining,

just as brightly as his brass.

"Step forward now sailor"

"How shall I deal Wth you?"

"Have you always turned the other cheek?"

"To my church have you been true?"

The sailor squared his shoulders

and said

"No, Lord, I guess I ain't.

Because those of us who serve our country can't always be saints."

"I've had to work most Sundays

and at times my talk was tough

and sometimes I've been violent.

Because the world is awfully rough."

"But I never took a penny

that wasn't mine to keep

Though I worked a lot of overtime

when the bills they got too steep."

"And I never passed a cry for help,

though at times I shook with fear,

and sometimes, God forgive me,

I've wept unmanly tears."

"I know I don't deserve a place

among the people here

"I tried to do my duty, and to help

to calm their fears."

"but my standing here before you,

means someone took my life

"I only ask of you Lord,

Please, watch over my babies and my beautiful wife."

"And if you've a place for me here

Lord,

It needn't be so grand

I never expected or had too much

but if you don't I'll understand."

There was silence all around the throne

Where the saints had often trod

As the sailor waited quietly

for the judgement of his God

"Step forward now sailor

you've borne your burdens well,

Walk peacefully on heaven's streets"

"You've done your time in hell"

CID,

I first met you before we deployed with 3/1 back in 2003. I immediately had great respect for you. Upon learning of your previous history I wanted to pick your brain of what combat would be like. You offered all you could and got me ready for what combat might be like. Then there was all of the times we sat there and listened to George Lopez and laughed our rear ends off. It never really hits home until someone you know and served with dies while in harms way. You served proudly and you definitely epitomize Honor, Courage, and Commitment. You will be missed brother. I will not say, "Good-bye", for I will see you again. God Bless!

To my cousin Cesar.

I can't believe you're gone.

I remember us growing up & the time all of us cousins spent together every weekend at Grandpa & Grandma's house. All of us running around making so much noise. Those were the days...

No worries, No stress, not a care in the world.

I will forever remember the little boy with the chubby little face and all that long curly hair.

You grew into a wonderful man.

One of Honor, Respect, & Courage.

It is with these qualities that you answered your call to duty.

You served your country honorably and we, as Americans owe you our heartfelt thanks.

As I attend your service at Camp Pendleton the image of that little boy will be in my mind and forever in my heart.

I am so proud of the life & family you made for yourself.

Also, I am extremely proud to call you family.

I will pray for all your brothers and sisters, your parents, wife, daughters & soon to be born son.

To my cousin Cesar (my hero),

I remember our times as young kids together at your house, my house and at grandma's house. I remember a photo that we took together in which we were proudly showing off our stick on tatoos, but that was many years ago and now we both have served our country, we have seen war, we have families of our own. I will forever cherish our times together and will offer those memories to your family if they wish as those were some happy times. I know that at your memorial service, I will attempt to remain strong and will offer your parents, brothers, and sisters my condolences as well as your wife and kids. I remember when you asked me advice about military service based on my own service and my only regret is that I could not be there with you to watch each others backs. I will miss you always "piggy", may God keep you in his tender care and for your family, I offer whatever service you may need that I can provide.

PS: I know that the streets of heaven are guarded by Marines, so don't try to get out guard duty by telling them that you are a sailor. You may be a sailor, but remember the saying; "Once a Marine, Always a Marine."
