Anthony S. Cometa Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jun. 19, 2005.
When Anthony S. Cometa arrived at his base in Kuwait, he sent an excited e-mail to his family. "Everything's going great," the e-mail said. "They have everything that I want. We have a Pizza Hut, a Burger King, and even a Subway!" Cometa, 21, of Las Vegas, died June 16 in a vehicle accident in southern Iraq. He graduated high school in 2002 and was based at Henderson. "His heart was huge," said his father, Joe Cometa. "He never bailed on anybody. If you needed help from Tony, Tony was there for you." Joe Cometa said his son taught himself how to play the bass guitar. And the sergeants let him and his buddies have a band at their camp in Kuwait. His mother, Nancy Fontana, said that when she last talked to her son his morale was high but the weather was hot. "He goes, `Mom, I never appreciated air conditioning until now.'" His mother now cherishes a piece of music Tony and another soldier recorded in Kuwait, a last reminder of his talents. "I think it's awesome. I just wish he had a chance to complete it," she said.

A poem for Tony . YOUR LAST NAME. Dear Tony even though I belief the war is phony I still miss you homie, and the cray thing is I didn't even know your last name.Until they brought home your remains ,but dam how things change . Who should I blame but forget that that's lame. I am not going to get caught up in that kind of game it will just end the same. It's his fault it's her fault it's there fault it's are fault . Will make fun of them. They will make fun of us . They will threaten us. We will threaten them . They will bomb us and of course we will bomb them. When will it end probably when were all died. OR WAIT. Maybe we can show them love and they'll show it back and, that will equal peace and that will be that. But Dam man I just wish things could have been the same before I knew your last name. I was surprised when I got in touch with an old friend and he told me what happened. I immediately had to let my brother know. You and your brother were always at our house during the summer swimming in the pool, playing video games, etc. I wish that we would have kept in touch after moving to Ohio. Just know that no matter where I am, I am always going to be thinking of you.

Hi Anthony's Mom....I have been thinking so much of the 'boys' lately, as I always do, and still have the photo of Anthony that you gave me at the Red Rock Canyon ceremony/luncheon.
We lost touch after your e-mail address change, but just wanted you to know that I'm thinking of you too. It was so nice to meet you, and always know that I will never forget your son.

What I remember most about you Tony is how loving you were. Your hugs have touched peoples lives (mine being one of them). Your smile and presence truly lit up a room. You laid your life so people could have their freedom. You are a true hero and we thank you. ****YOU WILL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN******

Holding you all in my thoughts and prayers.

The Wind on The Downs

“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”

(Written by Marian Allen during World War l )

Two lines that I wish you to keep near your heart…….

“You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe”

I did not know Anthony, but I am remembering
his service. He is my hero. !

The Other Side

i'm over on the other side
where life and death softly divide.
left my skin and bones behind
now i'm over on the other side.

can you feel me there with you?
my breath is gone but i'm not through.
loved you then and i still do
from over on the other side.

i can fly. really fly.
below the earth ... all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

it's good here on the other side.
the sweetest songs...the bluest skies.
thank you for the tears you cried
but it's good here on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth...all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side

the world is smaller than a needle's eye.
where life and death softly divide.
when you leave your skin and bones behind
i'll be waiting on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth ... all through the sky.
go tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

I have memories in my pocket.
They rattle among the change.

My memories of you are treasures I carry wherever I go.

They are stored in bits and pieces, parts of a beautiful whole
They give me comfort when I think I am alone.

Yes, I have memories in my pocket, like so much other stuff I keep there.

But of all the treasures I have, it’s the memories of you that are the most precious.

TONY, I HAVE BEEN THINKING OF YOU A LOT LATELY. I JUST LOST ANOTHER REALLY GREAT FRIEND OF MINE YESTERDAY, AND I KNOW THAT YOU TWO CAN WATCH OVER ME. I WAS REMEMBERING OUR DATE TO THE 8TH GRADE FORMAL, AND YOU WERE THE BEST. I MISS YOU A LOT. I HOPE THAT YOUR MEMORIES OF ME ARE AS GREAT AS I HAVE OF YOU, YOU WERE MY FIRST LOVE, AND YOU WILL ALWAYS BE THE LOVE IN MY HEART. THANK YOU. LOVE YOU.

There is nothing that I can say or do to take away the pain or bring you peace in your time of sorrow, but I will offer you and your family my heart felt condolences. I also offer you my prayers that in time the pain will easy and the memories of your HERO will carry you through each day and night. I want to thank your HERO, for his/her selfless act of becoming a member of the armed forces, his/her willingness to defend the United States of America, all that we hold sacred and for the sacrifice that will forever be etched in the memories of all those who knew him/her. Though tears can never bring him/her back, we hope that our tears express our gratitude for the sacrifice that he/she made and our sorrow at his/her passing. I believe for every fallen HERO there is a star shining brightly up above to remind us of the precious gift we were given.

Your mission on earth is complete and you are now a member of GOD’s Heavenly armed forces. Stand down brave warrior and take your rightful place in Heaven with all the HEROES who have passed before.

I made a special promise to LE RON A. WILSON, a dear family friend who joined the Army with three other friends, one of whom is my son (Le Ron was killed in action on 07/06/07 at the age of 18) on the day he was laid to rest as I touched his coffin, that I would never forget him nor would I forget those that gave their lives for our country before him, with him and after him and so when I came across www.legacy.com, I thought what a great way to keep my promise to Le Ron, so I will continue to leave tributes in each guest book until the day there is no longer the need to leave these tributes to a FALLEN HERO.

REST IN PEACE, HERO, YOU WILL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN!!

hello Cometa family,

I was touched by the tribute to your son. As I was reviewing the roster of the fallen on the Washington Post website, I clicked on Spc. Anthony S. Cometa's picture. Although I did not know him personally, he is a true American hero to me and my prayers are with you all. I just thought you should know that there are other Americans who apprecite the sacrifice that your family has made in the name of freedom.

A poem for our hero
Tony Cometa
June 15 1984 To June 16 2005

My heart feels so empty, and I don’t know what to say
I watched you grow up from a little boy to a man on this day.
You gave of yourself in so many ways, to help others who wasn’t having a real great day.

Your love for life and the impact you had On others,
They could not help but become your friends and your brothers.
Your gentle smile and your loving embrace,
Gave to all you surrounded, assurance of your faith.

You are a very special man and this is absolutely true,
You are my hero, my friend and my nephew.
I will miss you so much that words can not describe,
But I know that you are sitting rate by Gods side.

He had plans for you in your life, and we may not understand,
the pain and the strife that he had in his plan.
But that’s ok, for he gave you to us freely, to love and to hold though only briefly.

I will miss you so much this is for sure, but I will see you again this is assured.
So until we meet again,
Farewell for now,
my nephew my hero to whom I AM SO PROUD

With all the love that I have to give,
Your uncle Keith

Tony was my neighbor until he moved to Las Vegas. He was a great person with a wonderful personality. He always made sure he came over to say hello and visit when he was home from Vegas. He gave the biggest hugs. I will be there always for your family. Tony thank you for serving our country. You will never be forgotten. Love, Carol Betz

I didnt know Anthony like my fiance does, but i also serve in the Nevada Army National Guard and was in his unit shortly up unitl his unit deployed. What i do remember of him was personality. His perception was his projection and that certainly came out. When I think of him i see him walking down the halls of the Henderson Armory where he drilled with his unit. My fiance is currently there with Anthonys remaining unit and he was also one of the first to arrive at the scene of Anthonys accident. The discussions I have had with Massimo (my fiance) of Anthony was the last few words he and Anthony exchanged. They discussed how they were all going to celebrate Anthonys 21st birthday when they came home in November. Massimo also reflected how Anthony was so nice and willing to teach him how to play his guitar. This whole situation is extremely hard to swallow for many reasons. Although we see through the media how many lives have been lost it doesnt seem real up until it is someone you know. Even though the dangers that the Soldiers were going to face out there were known- no one ever thought it could happen to one of ours. It just wasnt feasable. You think as a Soldier you are prepared...but you are never really ready to face this sort of thing. Anthony is in a better place....and is with HIS savior. GOD bless you all and my prayers are with his family. A Soldier is never dead until he is forgotten, and some of us will never forget!!

I am a friend of Tony's from Vegas. I met him last summer from his best friend Patrick. Our group hangouts will never be the same. Tonys heart was as big as a house and his smile could light up any room. I will miss him sooo much. He was a genuine person with an awesome personality. I will remember all the good times and cherish the ones that mean the most. Things will never be the same without you.

You are in a better place looking upon all of us who care for you.

Good luck in Heaven and see you soon...
