Erik R. Heldt Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jun. 19, 2005.
Erik R. Heldt grew up on a farm, and the aspiring football coach managed to stay down-to-earth in Iraq. "He was carefree but professional at the same time," Lance Cpl. Matthew C. Trigo wrote in a letter to Heldt's wife. "He possessed a unique courage that allowed him to be just the way he wanted to be, self-expressive and nonchalant." Heldt, 26, of Hermann, Mo., died June 16 when a roadside bomb exploded near his Humvee near Ramadi. He was based at Camp Pendleton. Heldt grew up on a farm in eastern Missouri and played football in high school before graduating in 1997. He joined the Marines two years ago and became known as a reliable leader. He is survived by his wife, Crystal, and a daughter, Taylor Purdy. Friends in Hermann hoped to dedicate a new football field to him.

Ten years is right around the corner and how quickly time has passed. Feels like yesterday. To Erik's parents, I wish and pray that peace and comfort have come to you by now and that your memories are only good ones. As you know it changes your whole perspective on life and your personal disposition. For my brother to have had him with him that 16th of June meant that Erik was a great Marine and individual. My brother had a strong loyalty and love for his Marines and Erik must have made a great impression. Your family is forever in my prayers and thoughts and Erik's service and sacrifice for his fellow Marines lives on today. He is not just a forgotten memory or dash in time. He is an impact and moment in time that changed lives forever. News of Ramadi today should not be on your mind. Throughout history battles have been win and lost, and with that borders redrawn. You can't rewrite history. Erik and John will be forever remembered that in their moment of battle and time, they led from the front with boldness, courage and unselfishness to protect their fellow Marines and meet the enemy face to face. They chose a path rarely chosen, and for those who walk that path even fewer have the courage to continue in that path that they know full well could be a short, and dangerous path. God bless your family and as we meet the ten year anniversary and continue forward, know that there are Marines out there doing things better because of him...Respectfully.

Erik and I left together from st.louis to go to boot camp together then school of infantry, we were very close throughout training. Though We were assigned to different units we remained close. I took leave for Erik and Cyrstals wedding in Herman. I only had 2 days but I wouldnt of missed it for anything. I know he would have done the same. I was at Abu Ghuraib prison in Iraq when our units crossed paths. It was a great feeling running into my friend. By just a quick hug and a few words my morale was lifted by him. That was just the way he was, always putting you in a better mood. I was devestated to return to that same church not much later in life to see my buddy laid to rest. My heart to Erik's family. Your son, bother, husband is a hero. I am honored to say that I was able to serve at his side. Sweat, laugh, and cry many times with one of the greatest men I,ve ever met.
I love you buddy, see you again someday.......... semper fi.

In Humble Gratitude for your Service

Holding you all in my thoughts and prayers.

The Wind on The Downs

“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”

(Written by Marian Allen during World War l )

Two lines that I wish you to keep near your heart…….

“You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe”

I did not know Erik, but I am remembering
his service. He is my hero. !

The Other Side

i'm over on the other side
where life and death softly divide.
left my skin and bones behind
now i'm over on the other side.

can you feel me there with you?
my breath is gone but i'm not through.
loved you then and i still do
from over on the other side.

i can fly. really fly.
below the earth ... all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

it's good here on the other side.
the sweetest songs...the bluest skies.
thank you for the tears you cried
but it's good here on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth...all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side

the world is smaller than a needle's eye.
where life and death softly divide.
when you leave your skin and bones behind
i'll be waiting on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth ... all through the sky.
go tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

Today would have been Erik's 29th Birthday. He is sadly missed by all of us. His daughter is growing so fast into a lovely little lady. His nieces and nephews all talk about him as their "soldier hero". Matt and Chris miss their little brother's sense of humor. His father and I just cherish the time we all spent together. He will never by forgotten. Rest well son you are always in our thoughts and prayers.

To Erik's Family,
I promised you I would never forget Erik and I won't. As veteran's day and my brother's birthday draw near, they are never far from my thoughts. I have always found comfort that they are together...working and playing, and watching over all of us. If ever I can help you in any way please feel free to contact me. God's peace and love to you all.

There is nothing that I can say or do to take away the pain or bring you peace in your time of sorrow, but I will offer you and your family my heart felt condolences. I also offer you my prayers that in time the pain will easy and the memories of your HERO will carry you through each day and night. I want to thank your HERO, for his/her selfless act of becoming a member of the armed forces, his/her willingness to defend the United States of America, all that we hold sacred and for the sacrifice that will forever be etched in the memories of all those who knew him/her. Though tears can never bring him/her back, we hope that our tears express our gratitude for the sacrifice that he/she made and our sorrow at his/her passing. I believe for every fallen HERO there is a star shining brightly up above to remind us of the precious gift we were given.

Your mission on earth is complete and you are now a member of GOD’s Heavenly armed forces. Stand down brave warrior and take your rightful place in Heaven with all the HEROES who have passed before.

I made a special promise to LE RON A. WILSON, a dear family friend who joined the Army with three other friends, one of whom is my son (Le Ron was killed in action on 07/06/07 at the age of 18) on the day he was laid to rest as I touched his coffin, that I would never forget him nor would I forget those that gave their lives for our country before him, with him and after him and so when I came across www.legacy.com, I thought what a great way to keep my promise to Le Ron, so I will continue to leave tributes in each guest book until the day there is no longer the need to leave these tributes to a FALLEN HERO.

REST IN PEACE, HERO, YOU WILL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN!!

September 16, 2006

To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say...
but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.
I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
Here, there's no more tears of sadness; here is just eternal love.

Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I'm with you every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,
God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."

It's good to have you back again; you were missed while you were gone.
As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on.
I need you here badly; you're part of my plan.
There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man."

God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.
And when you lie in bed at night, the day's chores put to flight.
God and I are closest to you....in the middle of the night.

When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years
because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.
But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.

I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
But if I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.
But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.

There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.
It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too...
that as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.

If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain,
then you can say to God at night......"My day was not in vain."
And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile,
knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile.

So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low,
just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.
When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.

And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.

To the family and friends of Lance Cpl. Erik R. Heldt,

I have written very rarely to anyone, however I hope you received the message I sent almost a year ago. My brother was Erik's CO, Cpt. John W. Maloney. I have not forgotten how they lived together and how tragically they went together. I will forever find peace that my big brother was not alone on that fateful day and still stood watch over his men. It's the way he was. He said he was taking 200 of his finest men with him, and have enourmous pride that your son was one of them. Not a day goes by that I don't look up and think of them together. Please find comfort that my brother is still taking care of his men. With all of my heart, Semper Fi,

October 7, 2005

Dear Family and friends of L/CPL ERIK R HELDT,on the 8th of september my wife and I had a great time visiting the nice city of Hermann. During our tour through the city we passed a German beer hall and I noticed a picture of a U S MARINE on a flyer, that stirred my emotions and my love for the MARINE CORPS. AS A vietnam veteran and former member of the 1st Marine Division having witnessed many battle losses while in combat my hero's will always be fellow MARINES dedicated to ensuring our freedoms by serving doing the toughest job in the world. There is no doubt in my mind that ERIK loved what he was doing, and being a Marine was the iceing on the cake. My wife Donna and I send our condollence and love to his surviving family members and friends. Master gunnery sergeant Johnny Herrmann(RET) USMC SEMPER FIDELIS

I work in Warrenton at Holland USA. I would like to pass on a poem written by a fellow employee of Holland USA.

"Thanks Lance Corporal Erik Heldt"

As I passed your grave

This is how I felt

I didn’t know this young Marine

But I know the freedom for others

That he foreseen

And I know our country

He was fighting for

Yet chills went up my spine

On that hot June day

As this brave solider was put away

Flags were lowered to half-mast

It seemed the procession would never pass

The whole community came to a stop

With tears in their eyes

Yes, even a Cop

Here’s what I imagined

You might have to say

Look up look up across the way

Old Glory she’s flying

A little freer today

I’ll accept your respect

But forget the sorrow

Old glory’s going to fly

Even higher tomorrow.

It's hard to summarize my friendship with Erik, for I truly considered him to be a brother. Most of my best memories growing up included him, and the close group of friends we had. Losing Erik was a tremendous blow to all of us, but amazingly, it brought all of us together. We all realized how lucky we were to have him in our lives. It has now brought us closer, and made us not take any day for granite. To all the Heldt family: your son, brother, and husband will NEVER be forgotten. Gary, Patty, Crystal and the entire Heldt Family:

Even though I did not have the privilege to know Erik personally - I did have the privilege to watch him grow up in the Hermann schools. My husband (Lee) & I have always been avid Hermann football fans. Watching his team achieve the perfection it did was motivational to my youngest son and the rest of the 2002-2003 Bearcat team.

More inspirational than his achievements in high school, though, was his true dedication to his family and country. It was always evident to everyone in the Hermann area when talking about our young men serving our country.

I deeply feel for you and although I cannot truly feel the depth of your loss I share a spot missing in mine for our fine young man from Hermann who always did us all so proudly!

To all of Erik's family,

I want to extend our deepest sympathies at this time of grief. Find comfort in the fact that Erik was fighting for the most wonderful cause of all......FREEDOM.

For the whole town to come together and show their support at a time like this, Erik must have been a very special person and had touched many lives while he was with us.

Peace be with all of you.

To the entire family,

I am so sorry for your loss.

If it was not for brave men like Erik we, as US citizens, would not have what we have today. Our soldiers make it possible for us to sleep peacefully knowing that we have the best of the best out there defending us. Erik was the best of the best.

You all are in my prayers. If there is anything I can do please let me know.

I am also sending you the love and prayers for those who work at Boeing Travel. A few months ago we had sent Erik a care package. In return we got a nice letter of thanks that touched everyone's heart. Everyone at Boeing Travel was shocked to hear the news and saddened.

Again you are all in our thoughts and prayers

To the Heldt Family,

You don't know me, but I just had to send this message to express our deepest sympathy to all of you, we know what you are going through, we lost our 21 year old grandson in Iraq December 3, 2004, he was also killed by a car bomb but he did save the lives of his fellow Marines and is truly a hero as we know your son and husband is. We feel your grief and pray that you will find peace and comfort from the Good Lord, we know that God has a plan for all of us, but why our loved ones have to go at such a young age is hard to understand, we also know that God wanted these good Marines in heaven with him & that their time was up, we will see them again in heaven.

Again let me say that we feel your pain,it is sooo very hard & it hurts so much. But like I said we will see them again & they are looking down on us. We thank your son & husband & father as everyone thanked our grandson for giving the untimate sacrifice. Our Grandson was buried on what would have been his 22nd birthday. I am sorry I am talking so much about our grandson, but I want you to know that we know how you feel and what you are going through. Our Grandsons name was Cpl. Matthew Wyatt.

To Crystal and the entire Heldt family-may God Bless you and comfort you in this terrible time of grief. Thank you for allowing Erik to join with the many others who have fought for the freedoms that we as Americans tend to take for granted. They are truely selfless people and I know that he will always be remembered as our "HOME TOWN HERO". We will keep you and your families in our hearts and prayers.

It is Monday evening, June 20th and I just recieved a call that was not such good news. My best friend from college, Crystal has lost her husband, ultimately her best friend. My prayers and thoughts go out to the family and friends of Erik. I can remember him when he was small and running around at family events. We share an aunt and uncle but from different sides of the family. I can only thank him for dedicating and giving up his life to help protect and save ours.

My deepest sympathy!
