James D. Stewart Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jun. 24, 2005.
"This true leader had only just replaced his gunner when he was hit and killed by an IED on the road in Western Iraq. He knew that the convoy was entering a region that had proven to be pretty dangerous over the last few weeks and SGT Stewart was the kind of leader who would not ask a young Soldier to do something he was not willing to do himself. He sat his gunner down in the command seat and he replaced him for the dangerous stretch of road. A young Soldier is still alive today because of his personal sacrifice."

CPT Steven B. Shaw
Captain, Transportation Corps
Commander, 57th Transportation Company

James D. Stewart believed he had to take a stand against terrorism after watching the World Trade Center towers fall on Sept. 11, 2001. "He was very insulted that these terrorists would attack us," his mother, Rachel Barrett, recalled. "It was like: 'We've got to go get them.'" Stewart, 29, a native of Oglethorpe, Ga., who lived in Chattanooga, Tenn., died June 21 in Rutbah when an explosive detonated near his vehicle. He was based at Fort Drum and was on his second deployment to Iraq. Stewart enjoyed sports, drew war pictures as a child and later joined the Junior ROTC. He loved to travel and was a cross-country truck driver before he joined the Army in 2002. "His only regret is he never saw the Grand Canyon," Barrett said. "But now he's got the perfect view." Marilyn Stewart, 28, isn't sure how she will get along without her older, protective brother. "I can't see myself without my brother. But he'll always be my soldier, no matter what happens," she said.

Sgt Stewart, a quiet toast in your honor, there is no one to see or hear about it, they would not understand anyway. Gone are the days of rolling convoys, all out chaos, may they never return. Your picture displayed, yet hidden on the wall behind the LCD screen along with other fallen comrades, rememberance is not a conversation piece but personal. Just a silent sad thought, you are far from forgotten. God bless you and your family.

Holding you all in my thoughts and prayers.

The Wind on The Downs

“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”

(Written by Marian Allen during World War l )

Two lines that I wish you to keep near your heart…….

“You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe”

I did not know 'Doug', but I am remembering
his service. He is my hero. !

The Other Side

i'm over on the other side
where life and death softly divide.
left my skin and bones behind
now i'm over on the other side.

can you feel me there with you?
my breath is gone but i'm not through.
loved you then and i still do
from over on the other side.

i can fly. really fly.
below the earth ... all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

it's good here on the other side.
the sweetest songs...the bluest skies.
thank you for the tears you cried
but it's good here on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth...all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side

the world is smaller than a needle's eye.
where life and death softly divide.
when you leave your skin and bones behind
i'll be waiting on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth ... all through the sky.
go tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

To my brother: Just another day thinking about you, wishing you were here w/me. The pain and hurt will never subside... The more I think about you the more I miss hearing your voice, seeing your face and laughing at your jokes. No one will ever know how I feel!! Your my only brother, my best-friend and my HERO! I love you Doug...I miss you SOOOOO very much

You are remembered and respected. Thank you Sgt Stewart!

There is nothing that I can say or do to take away the pain or bring you peace in your time of sorrow, but I will offer you and your family my heart felt condolences. I also offer you my prayers that in time the pain will easy and the memories of your HERO will carry you through each day and night. I want to thank your HERO, for his/her selfless act of becoming a member of the armed forces, his/her willingness to defend the United States of America, all that we hold sacred and for the sacrifice that will forever be etched in the memories of all those who knew him/her. Though tears can never bring him/her back, we hope that our tears express our gratitude for the sacrifice that he/she made and our sorrow at his/her passing. I believe for every fallen HERO there is a star shining brightly up above to remind us of the precious gift we were given.

Your mission on earth is complete and you are now a member of GOD’s Heavenly armed forces. Stand down brave warrior and take your rightful place in Heaven with all the HEROES who have passed before.

I made a special promise to LE RON A. WILSON, a dear family friend who joined the Army with three other friends, one of whom is my son (Le Ron was killed in action on 07/06/07 at the age of 18) on the day he was laid to rest as I touched his coffin, that I would never forget him nor would I forget those that gave their lives for our country before him, with him and after him and so when I came across www.legacy.com, I thought what a great way to keep my promise to Le Ron, so I will continue to leave tributes in each guest book until the day there is no longer the need to leave these tributes to a FALLEN HERO.

REST IN PEACE, HERO, YOU WILL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN!!

I have privately mourned the passing of Sgt Stewart since I found out the news so long ago, Army and Iraq are a distant memory now and no one understands such sorrow here nowadays. Only recently discovered this guest book. I had dealings with Sgt Stewart in the transportation world of Ft Drum, myself from the now defunct 710th MSB. Sgt Stewart was a mentor, full of advice and crafty "inside information" on becoming an NCO, untangling levels of Army red tape in the promotion system. I never had worries of my transport mission not going smooth if Sgt Stewart was my point of contact. He truly went out of his way for his soldiers and those he dealt with in garrison, during long overworked days of 2003-04 Fond memories of bygone days, blanketed by sadness. My heart goes out to the family, a terrible loss of a remarkable man.

To the family and friends of James, I met James' mother, Rachel, last weekend at Arlington National Cemetery. It was under the toughest and saddest of circumstances and my heart goes out to everyone that is grieving this tremendous loss. I remember being so in awe of Rachel. How she talked about her son. She was so proud of him. I am so glad and honored to have met her. Rachel and everyone else, James' sacrifice also became your sacrifice. Words can not erase the hurt but know that your son will be missed, honored and remembered. He lives on in your hearts and your memories will keep his spirit alive.

I was in the same platoon with SGT Stewart. SGT Stewart was very nice to me, we often joked or smoked together. He even took me to the airport a 1 1/2 away from the base to drop my spouse off. SGT Stewart even helped me moved out of my apt. He loved his coffee, his smokes and his music. He loved to talked about his sister. He was a great soldier but an even better friend. He may be gone but he will never be forgotten. I truly miss him.

Psalm 23

1

The LORD is my shepherd, I shall not be in want.

2

He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters,

3

He restores my soul. He guides me in paths of righteousness for his name's sake.

4

Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.

5

You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies. You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows.

6

Surely goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the LORD forever.

This is a verse that I have found to be comforting to me during my husbands death. Remember that when it seems that no one else is round, God is still there with you! And he will be your rock!

My daughter,McKaLyne, and I send our heartfelt sympathy for your loss! God Bless this warrior, God Bless those whom serve freedom's cause! They are our true HERO's!!!!
