Benjamin D. Jansky Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jul. 30, 2005.
So calm and strong was Benjamin D. Jansky that even a man of the cloth took to calling him Gentle Ben. Jansky, 28, of Oshkosh, Wis., died July 27 in Taqaddum when his vehicle was accidentally struck by another military vehicle. He was assigned to Monclova. "He placed a high value on why he was in Iraq and believed in it very strongly, yet he had torn feelings," said Joe Grier, the pastor of Grace Chapel who gave Jansky his nickname. "He really didn''t like being away from his family, and he didn''t like being in unfamiliar territory. But he never complained about the sacrifice." Jansky was a stay-at-home dad while his wife taught special education at a middle school. The couple met while both attended the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh. They were married in 1998. He is survived by his wife, Kate, and two daughters, Emma, 3, and Reyna, just shy of 1 year old. Jansky was a devoted Chicago Cubs fan who loved baseball and reading. He and his wife worked to establish a ministry program for college students. "Kids knew they could stop at Ben and Kate''s house anytime, and eat or study," Grier said. "They were just fantastic for those kids."

My name is Mickey Avalos. I was Ben's Company Commander in Iraq. I want to say that I think about "Ben Jammin,'" as I called him, listen. I am sorry I took this kind to post anything. Ben Jammin was a very kind soul, and very smart. I was glad to have him in my BN Maint. with MSG Pyrsbylski. I know his daughters would be 23 and 25 this year, ad we both spoke of our young children when we would be together. I had been medivaced out of Iraq the week before his situation, so I heard about it in Germany. I'm so sorry, as this has weighed on me for a longtime. I just hope his daughter's have turned out well, ans know their dad was a great person.

Hello,
We would like to express our deepest condolences and also let the Jansky Family and friends know that we will be sending Care Packages to troops in Afghanistan this week and we'll be dedicating several of these to your loved one. Each package will carry the name, photo and the hometown of Benjamin D. Jansky US Army Captain. We realize that this is a small tribute, but we do this with all respect and sincerity and we want you to know that it is made possible by thousands of like-minded individuals from across the American youth hockey community. We will not forget. May God Bless you and keep you strong.
Sincerely,

I knew Benjamin serving as his Battalion Executive officer when he worked as my S-4 for the 521st Maintenance Bn. I new he was always striving to be the best he could be and desired to be a Company Commander. I was saddened to hear of his death. I was stationed in Mosul, Iraq when he was killed at "TQ". Ben would have gone far in the US Army Reserve with his enthusiasm for completing the mission.

To the family of Capt. Benjamin D. Jansky:
The Fort Snelling Memorial Chapel Foundation will be honoring your loved one at the non-denominational Christian Memorial Day Remembrance worship service at 11:00 a.m. on Sunday, 26 May 2013. We will remember the casualties of the Global War on Terrorism from Minnesota … and the bordering states of Iowa, North Dakota, South Dakota and Wisconsin. Outside of the historic Fort Snelling Veterans Memorial Chapel will be a “Memorial Garden” filled with some 300 white crosses bearing the names of the war dead … including your loved one.

The Memorial Garden will be encircled with larger white crosses representing all of the wars of our nation's history and give honor to all who have served in the United States Armed Forces and made the ultimate sacrifice for the freedoms we enjoy today. Wreaths will be placed at the foot of each 8-foot cross bearing the number of U.S. Service Members killed in each of America's conflicts.

I would like to extend to your family an invitation to honor us with your presence at worship as we pay tribute to the sacrifice made by your service member and family. Our pastor, Kenneth L. Beale, Jr., will preach a message entitled, “Freedom:Free, but Costly.” At the conclusion of the worship hour, all of the congregation will be invited to silently pay their respects at the garden and there place poppies at each of the crosses. A Memorial Rifle Squad of the Fort Snelling National Cemetery will fire vollies as the US flag is lowered to half-staff and Taps is played. Following your visit to the Memorial Garden, your family is invited to attend an informal reception (weather permitting) outside of the Chapel. The Memorial Garden will remain until 5:00 p.m. on Monday, 27 May (Memorial Day).

As this Christian worship service has traditionally been well attended, we would be happy to reserve seating for you and yours. I first meet Benjamin, "Jansky" as I used to call Him, at Puerto Rico in 2003. He was attached to our company the 264th SVC Co. out of Salinas PR which was getting ready to mobilize to Iraq. Jansky proved to be a quiet well manered young man who always gave his all to get things done the right way. As an officer he always understood that he had to gain the repect of his NCO's, this he accoplished very quickly. Jansky was in Puerto Rico for a short time but he left his mark on us, he was just that type of person. Many of us got to share more time with him in the state of Wisconsin at operation Platinum Wrench, where we played basketball with him during our time off. I saw Jansky one last time before he headed out for Iraq while I was stationed in Kuwait with the 276th, we spoke for a while over lunch, it seems like yesterday. If there is something that I would want to say about Jansky is that he was a good soldier, leader and friend. You are in our thoughts and prayers.

To the Jansky family,

I know there are no words to say, except how sorry I am for your loss. May you hold Benjamins' memory in your heart and please remember he shall never be forgotten.

...For you every single soldier
Those who served so honorable
Your life was forever altered
While I’m home safe and free
I stand with grateful admiration
I stand respectful and so proud
I know I’m only a civilian
And I don’t even know if it’s allowed.

But I salute you; allow me the honor
to salute you with permission let me say
Even though I hold no rank know that from my heart
My humble gratitude comes from the deepest part.
I salute you.

Welcome him now into paradise where there will be no more sorrow, no more weeping or pain, but only peace and joy with Jesus your Son, and the Holy Spirit forever and ever.
May God hold Benjamin in the palm of His hand. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. My deepest sympathies.

The Wind on The Downs

“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”

(Written by Marian Allen during World War l )

Two lines that I wish you to keep near your heart…….

“You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe”

I did not know Benjamin, but I am remembering
his service. He is my hero. !

The Other Side

i'm over on the other side
where life and death softly divide.
left my skin and bones behind
now i'm over on the other side.

can you feel me there with you?
my breath is gone but i'm not through.
loved you then and i still do
from over on the other side.

i can fly. really fly.
below the earth ... all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

it's good here on the other side.
the sweetest songs...the bluest skies.
thank you for the tears you cried
but it's good here on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth...all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side

the world is smaller than a needle's eye.
where life and death softly divide.
when you leave your skin and bones behind
i'll be waiting on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth ... all through the sky.
go tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

May 2, 2008

As another year passes, once again my thoughts return to that eventful day we lost young CPT Ben Jansky to an untimely death on a lonely-highway in Al-Anbar province at Al Taqqadum AB.

CPT Jansky was the Maintenance Officer for the 983rd (Heavy) Engineer Battalion and was responsible for maintaining and caring for 100's of wheeled and tracked vehicles used for numerous important projects on the airbase.

That was how I came to meet young Jansky when he came into my office late one evening looking for help obtaining parts for several of his trucks and bull-dozers.

CPT Jansky was a highly energetic knowlegeable and resourseful officer, who was dedicated and commited to his comrades and his Battalion.

I remember the day we held the religious service for him on the Marine Base at the base chapel and saluted our fellow soldier, one last time and how sad that all of us felt that day. I feel that way right now.

Ben's family can be very proud of the way that young man conducted himself on the battlefield and of the job that he was doing for our country, when he was taken from us.
He truly died a Warriors' death.

As a mother of one of the many soldiers that served in Iraq with Captain Jansky, I wanted to let you know that a day does not go by without me thinking of the loss that everyone has endured. Though I only met Captain Jansky briefly before the deployment, We feel that we knew him very well. Our son Specialist Ruwan was deployed with Captain Jansky and told many stories and spoke of him in high regards. He helped our son get through some things while training and beyond. There are not enough words to express our gratitude for what he shown not only to our son but everyone in the 983rd. He trully is and always will be special in our hearts and memories as a hero to all of us. I know in my heart he is still watching over the guys from the 983rd in a way that only a soldier could. God Bless you and yours-you will be forever in our hearts. Sincerely Patrick and Karen Ruwan parents of Specialist Benjamin Ruwan

There is nothing that I can say or do to take away the pain or bring you peace in your time of sorrow, but I will offer you and your family my heart felt condolences. I also offer you my prayers that in time the pain will easy and the memories of your HERO will carry you through each day and night. I want to thank your HERO, for his/her selfless act of becoming a member of the armed forces, his/her willingness to defend the United States of America, all that we hold sacred and for the sacrifice that will forever be etched in the memories of all those who knew him/her. Though tears can never bring him/her back, we hope that our tears express our gratitude for the sacrifice that he/she made and our sorrow at his/her passing. I believe for every fallen HERO there is a star shining brightly up above to remind us of the precious gift we were given.

Your mission on earth is complete and you are now a member of GOD’s Heavenly armed forces. Stand down brave warrior and take your rightful place in Heaven with all the HEROES who have passed before.

I made a special promise to LE RON A. WILSON, a dear family friend who joined the Army with three other friends, one of whom is my son (Le Ron was killed in action on 07/06/07 at the age of 18) on the day he was laid to rest as I touched his coffin, that I would never forget him nor would I forget those that gave their lives for our country before him, with him and after him and so when I came across www.legacy.com, I thought what a great way to keep my promise to Le Ron, so I will continue to leave tributes in each guest book until the day there is no longer the need to leave these tributes to a FALLEN HERO.

REST IN PEACE, HERO, YOU WILL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN!!

I logged on to my Hotmail account this evening and received the sad news that Ben Jansky had died whilst serving his country in Iraq. Back in the summer of 2000 I had the pleasure of meeting Ben at Fort McCoy, WI on a UK/US exchange with his then unit, the 577th Maint Coy. Needless to say both he and his Coy Exec Officer, Eric Wilson (who told me of Ben's untimely death), were the perfect hosts, who ensured that I was looked after superbly. I served in Iraq myself back in 2003 for Op TELIC 1 and 2 and considered myself lucky to get back in one piece. It is Ben's tragedy that he did not. I am a Major now and command a signal squadron here in England. One of my young captain's has just mobilised to deploy imminently to Afghanistan on Op HERRICK. Before he left I told him to not take needless risks and to be mindful of the safety of his troops. I know that I will not have to worry about his integrity, but equally that I will have to worry about his sense of duty. I am absolutely certain that the same was true of Ben - mission and mates before himself. I am sorry that our paths did not cross after the summer of 2000 - we were both young and building lives for ourselves. It is of small comfort to his wife and daughters, but it is worth saying here - he died doing something that he was passionate about...soldiering and protecting his country and family. I am attending a British Army veterans meeting on the evening of Monday 2nd July. I will ask those present to observe a moment's silence in remembrance of Ben and I will raise a glass to his memory in the Officer's Mess afterwards.

To the family and friends

I have only just begun this journey and may not have known your loved one personally. I grew up in a small town in Wisconsin and felt I needed to extend to you my deepest condolences.

No words will ever express the grief those close to this lost treasure are feeling. I can only say that I can share this grief as I too lost a loved one July 8, 2006. I will continue to pray for the safety of our soldiers and especially the family and friends of our lost hero’s. I only hope the memories will carry us through. I will continue pray that you also will believe and know that our heavenly father will not give us more than we can handle.

As always I read (and cry) through the memorials of our lost hero’s, So many people have already expressed the things I would also say. I am amazed and take comfort that so many people care. I can only thank you for the sacrifice you and especially Ben have made to protect our country. As others have said “I am only an email away.” I would be honored if you so choose to share about this fine hero.

Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Matthew 11:28

In Remeberance Of Cpt Benjamin Jansky. I served with him while deployed in Iraq, and I want to say that he was a great soldier, and a great man. I first met Cpt. Janksy when I arrived in Monclova, OH to start traing for the deployment. I had alot of personal troubles going on with my family back home, but no matter what he was always able to make me laugh, and would always brighten my day somehow. He'd always do one of his goofy things to cheer me up. We ALL miss you Sir.

Hello,

As many of you no doubt recall, today is the first anniversary of the death of CPT Ben Jansky. We in the 983rd ECB(H) have gone in many directions since December, 2005 but will have a common reference point for the rest of our lives; namely our service in Iraq.

I remember Ben as a gentle, goofy, and steadfast soul. I admired his commitment to the Army and genuine caring for those he worked with. I often think of his wife, Kate, and his two daughters Emma and Rayna as I do of all the families of the soldiers of the 983rd who died in Iraq. I think it is right that we take a moment today to remember his and his families sacrifice for the nation.

To the family of Capt. Benjamin D. Jansky:

The Fort Snelling Memorial Chapel Foundation will be honoring your loved one at the non-denominational Memorial Day Sunday worship service at 11:00 a.m. on 28 May, 2006. We will remember the casualties of the Global War on Terrorism from Minnesota … and the neighboring states of Iowa, North Dakota, South Dakota and Wisconsin. Outside of the historic Fort Snelling Veterans Memorial Chapel will be a “Memorial Garden” filled with white crosses bearing the names of the war dead … including your loved one.

I would like to extend to your family an invitation to honor us with your presence at worship as we pay tribute to the sacrifice made by your service member and family. Our pastor, U.S. Army Chaplain, LTC Kenneth L. Beale, Jr. will preach a message entitled “What Are We to Remember?” At the conclusion of the worship hour, all of the congregation will be invited to silently pay their respects at the garden and place poppies at each of the crosses. An honor guard squad will be on hand to fire vollies as the US flag is lowered to half-staff and Taps is played.

As this Christian worship service has traditionally been well attended, we would be happy to reserve seating for you and yours. To do so, kindly call (612/970-7866) and leave a voice message indicating your veterans’ name and the number of persons attending. If you are not able to attend, we pray that you would find comfort in knowing that our prayers are with you and all of the fallen heroes.

Respectfully,

Leila Campbell

Psalm 23

1

The LORD is my shepherd, I shall not be in want.

2

He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters,

3

He restores my soul. He guides me in paths of righteousness for his name's sake.

4

Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.

5

You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies. You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows.

6

Surely goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the LORD forever.

This is a verse that I have found to be comforting to me during my husbands death. Remember that when it seems that no one else is round, God is still there with you! And he will be your rock!

My daughter,McKaLyne, and I send our heartfelt sympathy for your loss! God Bless this warrior, God Bless those whom serve freedom's cause! They are our true HERO's!!!!

Also, the Moving Tribute is was beautiful! Cherish those memories forever!

Ben, when you were in Indian Guides you were an inspiration to the younger kids even though you were a kid yourself. You were a leader then and became leader of men in the most harrowing of situations. Your sacrifice will never be forgotten. Don, your loss is unimaginable. You know more than most that freedom is not free. A grateful freind thanks you and Ben.

Just visited the Antioch HS website tonight to see what was going on there. I was checking things out from the school that I attended for 3 years before I moved. I couldn't believe what I saw, Ben, a soccer teammate had fallen in Iraq. My deepest condolences to the Jansky Family.

To His wife and darling girls, Ben was a wonderful person. We were in ROTC at UWO for two years and was always helpful in anyway needed. I regret that I did not get to know him better while he was Oshkosh. You are in my prayers, and he will always be with you and watching over you.

I remember CPT Jansky when he was a 2LT with the 377th Maintenance Company in Manitowoc, WI. Later he became the OIC in Milwaukee. We kept in touch by email. As I leave today for Afghanistan, I think about him, and all the times we laughed. All our soldiers wish his family our prayers and will think of him often.
