Hello,
We realize that we are very late to express our deepest condolences, but we wanted to let your family and friends know that we will be sending Care Packages to deployed troops this week and several of these will be dedicated to your loved one. Each package will carry the name, photo and hometown of Michael J. Wendling US Army Specialist.

We realize that this is a small tribute, but we do this with all respect and sincerity and we want you to know that it is made possible by thousands of like-minded individuals from across the American youth hockey community, their families and friends and others who support our mission.

We will not forget. May God Bless you and keep you safe and strong.

Sincerely,
Charlie Gili & Family

To the family of Spc. Michael J. Wendling:
The Fort Snelling Memorial Chapel Foundation will be honoring your loved one at the non-denominational Christian Memorial Day Remembrance worship service at 11:00 a.m. on Sunday, 26 May 2013. We will remember the casualties of the Global War on Terrorism from Minnesota … and the bordering states of Iowa, North Dakota, South Dakota and Wisconsin. Outside of the historic Fort Snelling Veterans Memorial Chapel will be a “Memorial Garden” filled with some 300 white crosses bearing the names of the war dead … including your loved one.

The Memorial Garden will be encircled with larger white crosses representing all of the wars of our nation's history and give honor to all who have served in the United States Armed Forces and made the ultimate sacrifice for the freedoms we enjoy today. Wreaths will be placed at the foot of each 8-foot cross bearing the number of U.S. Service Members killed in each of America's conflicts.

I would like to extend to your family an invitation to honor us with your presence at worship as we pay tribute to the sacrifice made by your service member and family. Our pastor, Kenneth L. Beale, Jr., will preach a message entitled, “Freedom:Free, but Costly.” At the conclusion of the worship hour, all of the congregation will be invited to silently pay their respects at the garden and there place poppies at each of the crosses. A Memorial Rifle Squad of the Fort Snelling National Cemetery will fire vollies as the US flag is lowered to half-staff and Taps is played. Following your visit to the Memorial Garden, your family is invited to attend an informal reception (weather permitting) outside of the Chapel. The Memorial Garden will remain until 5:00 p.m. on Monday, 27 May (Memorial Day).

As this Christian worship service has traditionally been well attended, we would be happy to reserve seating for you and yours. To do so, kindly call (651/286-7296) and leave a voice message indicating your veterans' name and the number of persons attending. For more information about the Foundation or driving directions to the historic chapel at Fort Snelling, visit our website at: www.fortsnellingmcf.org Special rates for nearby hotels will be available. For more information call (651/286-7296) or email the office ([email protected]) and leave your name and contact information.

Also, beginning at dusk (8:30 p.m.) on Saturday 25 May through dawn (6:30 a.m.) on Sunday, 26 May, a “Prayer Vigil for Peace” will be held in the sanctuary of the Chapel. You are invited to stop by, light a candle and place it at the foot of your loved one's cross in the Memorial Garden … and then enter the Chapel for prayer.

If you are not able to attend, we pray that you would find comfort in knowing that our prayers are with you and all of the fallen heroes.

Respectfully,

Holding you all in my thoughts and prayers.

The Wind on The Downs

“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”

(Written by Marian Allen during World War l )

Two lines that I wish you to keep near your heart…….

“You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe”

I did not know Michael, but I am remembering
his service. He is my hero. !

The Other Side

i'm over on the other side
where life and death softly divide.
left my skin and bones behind
now i'm over on the other side.

can you feel me there with you?
my breath is gone but i'm not through.
loved you then and i still do
from over on the other side.

i can fly. really fly.
below the earth ... all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

it's good here on the other side.
the sweetest songs...the bluest skies.
thank you for the tears you cried
but it's good here on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth...all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side

the world is smaller than a needle's eye.
where life and death softly divide.
when you leave your skin and bones behind
i'll be waiting on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth ... all through the sky.
go tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

I learned of Michael's death through my service with the United States Government, and I hold a deep respect for him, and those who serve in our military and civil defense. It has been two years since the horrifying event of your tragic death. And these past two years, the men have missed your witty humor and infectious laugh. We really could have used you around for the rest of deployment; you always had a way of making light of things. Drill weekends will never be the same without you, but we make do and try and celebrate the good times the best we can.

I am so thankful for the time that I got to know Michael J. Wendling. He was and still is the most unique individual I have ever known. The world is a lesser place without the presence of Mike, but a much livelier place thanks to the many people he touched.

There is nothing that I can say or do to take away the pain or bring you peace in your time of sorrow, but I will offer you and your family my heart felt condolences. I also offer you my prayers that in time the pain will easy and the memories of your HERO will carry you through each day and night. I want to thank your HERO, for his/her selfless act of becoming a member of the armed forces, his/her willingness to defend the United States of America, all that we hold sacred and for the sacrifice that will forever be etched in the memories of all those who knew him/her. Though tears can never bring him/her back, we hope that our tears express our gratitude for the sacrifice that he/she made and our sorrow at his/her passing. I believe for every fallen HERO there is a star shining brightly up above to remind us of the precious gift we were given.

Your mission on earth is complete and you are now a member of GOD’s Heavenly armed forces. Stand down brave warrior and take your rightful place in Heaven with all the HEROES who have passed before.

I made a special promise to LE RON A. WILSON, a dear family friend who joined the Army with three other friends, one of whom is my son (Le Ron was killed in action on 07/06/07 at the age of 18) on the day he was laid to rest as I touched his coffin, that I would never forget him nor would I forget those that gave their lives for our country before him, with him and after him and so when I came across www.legacy.com, I thought what a great way to keep my promise to Le Ron, so I will continue to leave tributes in each guest book until the day there is no longer the need to leave these tributes to a FALLEN HERO.

To the family and friends

I have only just begun this journey and may not have known your loved one personally I was especially saddened to see Mayville listed. I had many good memories happen in this small town.

I extend to you my deepest condolences. No words will ever express the grief those close to this lost treasure are feeling. I can only say that I can share this grief as I too lost a loved one July 8, 2006. I will continue to pray for the safety of our soldiers and especially the family and friends of our lost hero’s. I only hope the memories will carry us through. I will continue pray that you also will believe and know that our heavenly father will not give us more than we can handle.

As always I read (and cry) through the memorials of our lost hero’s, So many people have already expressed the things I would also say. I am amazed and take comfort that so many people care. I can only thank you for the sacrifice you and especially Michael have made to protect our country. As others have said “I am only an email away.” I would be honored if you so choose to share about this fine hero.

Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Matthew 11:28

To the family of Spc. Michael J. Wendling:

The Fort Snelling Memorial Chapel Foundation will be honoring your loved one at the non-denominational Memorial Day Sunday worship service at 11:00 a.m. on 28 May, 2006. We will remember the casualties of the Global War on Terrorism from Minnesota … and the neighboring states of Iowa, North Dakota, South Dakota and Wisconsin. Outside of the historic Fort Snelling Veterans Memorial Chapel will be a “Memorial Garden” filled with white crosses bearing the names of the war dead … including your loved one.

I would like to extend to your family an invitation to honor us with your presence at worship as we pay tribute to the sacrifice made by your service member and family. Our pastor, U.S. Army Chaplain, LTC Kenneth L. Beale, Jr. will preach a message entitled “What Are We to Remember?” At the conclusion of the worship hour, all of the congregation will be invited to silently pay their respects at the garden and place poppies at each of the crosses. An honor guard squad will be on hand to fire vollies as the US flag is lowered to half-staff and Taps is played.

As this Christian worship service has traditionally been well attended, we would be happy to reserve seating for you and yours. To do so, kindly call (612/970-7866) and leave a voice message indicating your veterans’ name and the number of persons attending. If you are not able to attend, we pray that you would find comfort in knowing that our prayers are with you and all of the fallen heroes.

Respectfully,

Leila Campbell

Mikey Mikey Mikey, We had a lot of good times buddy. back in the days of old school Immanuel Luthren. Then we had High School. You succeeded in everything you tried Mike. I know your family was and is very proud of you. I know I am too. I'll never forget the morning I heard about your untimely death. I was driving to work, it was 5:43am and I heard on the radio that two Wisconsin Soldiers were killed in combat in Iraq. Not thinking much when they read the first name....but then they said yours..SPC. Michael Wendling of Mayville..I stopped my car in the middle of the road, and tears filled my eyes and my heart sank down into my stomach. Cars honked their horns at me but it was if I coudn't move, they just drove around me as I sat there silent. I didn't want to believe it. I called up my parents and go them out of bed to confirm the news. I wish we could've had a lot more good times together man...man..you are everything that word means Mike...we were just boys..and now you've been taken away from us. That pulls at the strings of my faith like you couldn't believe. But to tell you the truth, I read your Dad's tribute to you and I am filled with a little spark of happiness knowing you are in a better place and that this was planned from the beginning. I miss you Mikey. I'll see you again someday.

To the rest of Michael's family, I cannot say how deeply sorry I am for what happened to Mike. I want you to know that my thoughts and players have been with you daily and will continue to be.

I only met Michael briefly. We didn`t speak, there was too much happening. I held his hand and helped carry him from the battlefield, I hope it is of some comfort to know that he wouldn`t have felt any pain. He was a brave man and a credit to your Country. Meeting was a great honour, and I think about him a lot. My prayers also go out to his family and loved ones.

G.O.A.T. (Greatest Of AllTime) -Where do I start..I've read this guest book more times than I can count on my hands and feet. Every time I read it, it touches me more deeply than the time before. It's really hard knowing that I'll be going home for thanksgiving and you won’t be there. Whether it be sheepshead, poker, drinking, the TAG center, or hide and go seek tag in fleet farm, I know you should, and deserve to be there. I know this had been said before, but you were honestly the most unique person I have ever met. You lived to make people happy and gave 110% to everything you did. Aleana, your dedication to golf, your loyalty to your friends, and your courageous contribution to our country all prove this to be true. You were always up for an outrageously fun time, but at the same time you always guided us with your morals and common sense. On many different occasions you told me what was wrong, or what was just plain dumb. Who knows where we would all be without you. You molded all of our lives more than any of us can sum into words. The more I think about it, the more G.reatest O.f A.ll T.ime explains everything that you were. Goat, not having you in my life anymore is the hardest thing I have ever had to cope with. You were to good of a person to leave us so early, but at the same time, you were everything God requires to be in heaven. I know I want you to be here just as much as he wants you there, so I’m trying not to be greedy. It’s just hard sometimes because a day doesn’t go by without me thinking about you. Green sweatpants, the Barn Ball Classic, lawn darts, Memorial Day weekends, picking up the homeless hitch-hiker, catching a fawn, golf ball diving, paying $1.00 for six avocado green chairs, me pissing my pants from laughing so hard about THE 6 CHAIRS, and then disposing some of the chairs on Kerri’s yard are all memories that I’ll never forget. You were the most amazing person that I’ve ever met, and thank you for that. You are in a much better place now, and one day we’ll all be joining you. Good-bye’s are forever, so I’m not going to say it. I will be sitting across the sheepshead table from you again someday. Come to think of it, I think you still have the Buffalo Nickel. So when I join you I’d like some snausage waiting for me. I think see-ya-later would be a much better close, because we will be there way before you get bored, that’s for sure. I can’t wait to see you again.

Mike,

I'm sorry I never got the chance to know you, but I know Aleana and I know how much you meant to her. She has told me countless stories about you, and you sounded like a pretty amazing guy ... the perfect guy, in fact. I don't know why God takes good people, but I know that the two of you will be together again. Thank you for your sacrifice for our country. Though I never met you, I will remember you always.

Mike,
No words can describe how proud I am of you and how much you mean to me. I am so thankful for the four years that we were able to spend together. You told me right from the beginning that there would never be a dull moment. Needless to say, you never did let me down. I truly enjoyed watching the smallest things bring you joy and excitement including the ice cream truck, trips to Wal-mart, the zoo and of course the many Brewer games. Our photos and memories keep me going each day. You had a sense of humor that could make me smile no matter how I was feeling. I will not only remember you for your sense of humor, but also for the love and compassion you showed towards me. We were a team, always there supporting each other. I find peace knowing that you are in a better place, and that I will see you again someday. You will always be my hero, and I cannot thank you enough for helping protect our country. Mikey, you will forever be in my heart and I will love you always. Good luck on the golf course as well as playing poker and sheepshead. Most of all, happy burrowing. :)

Mike you were like my big brother, even though i already have one, but you always looked after me and when we weren't partying tried to keep me in line. I have to say i have accumulated so many great times hanging out with you, i mean we road home in a van once from a party with both side doors open pretending we were in a helicopter. You always had advice to give me whether good or bad it didn't matter. I sit here with a blank in my head because i don't know how to express the true friendship we had. All the stupid things we did, all the fun we had, i could go on for days and days talking about it. This is THE hardest thing i have had to deal with in my lifetime thus far and the only thing that helps is that you would do anything for me and you did. Whether you knew or not you meant a lot to me, and to everyone who knew you. You were one of the most peculiar kids i knew, and thats why we all loved you. I hope you found a golf course that allows carry-ons because when i see you again we for sure are going to hit the links, and of course i'll win.

your best friend forever,

Aaron

When i heard that you passed i had just graduated tech school in San Antonio for the Air Force and I wasnt allowed to leave to pay my respects to a friend and a fellow solider. We all know that what you did was courageous and will be honored for all time.. I'll never forget how hard you fought for rebounds at open gym and how mad you got when I'd catch one on the river. Your family is in my thoughts and prayers.

MIKE,

Where to start we met in kindergarten and became the best of friends and allways were. Things were awsome in school with you and me being the only guys in our class so it was allways you and me all summer long. You were the brother I never had. Then came 8th grade and I moved away so you went to middle school but we allways kept in contact through out the years. I Was hopeing to see you in Navistar this November and I was hopeing you were going to pull my convoy security on my way to Baghdad. But the unexpected happened and I got the call that I lost my best friend 3 weeks before I was about to leave. Tuesday and Wednesday were the worst days of my life haveing to burry a fellow brother and soldier. You did great things for your country and you will never be forgotten for them. I know you are in a better place and I am looking forward to the day when I can see you again. I will allways carry the round that Angie gave to me and I know you will allways be with me and watching out for me in Iraq.

Mike-

Wow! Where to begin. I want to thank you for all the memories that I had with you. Both times I came to Milwaukee to party were a blast. I cherish every little memory I have of you. There was never a time when you couldn't make me laugh or anyone else. The best was when your sole of your shoe fell off and you gave it to Aleana because she not only had your heart but she also had your "sole" now. I want to thank you for being an awesome boyfriend to Aleana. You will always have a place in her heart and everyone else's! You two were the cutest couple and great for eachother. You will be truely missed by everyone that you ever talked to and you will never be forgotten. I know you are in a better place and I know you will always be looking down on us. I promise I will keep Aleana smiling like you would have! Thank You Mike for Serving for Our Country! God Bless You!

Mike,

It was hard for me to hear that a classmate of 12 years would no longer be with us. But I know that you are in a better place where we will all some day meet. We weren't very close during our high school years, but our class has had many memories throughout the years at Immanuel. Those times will never be forgotten. Thanks for all the good times and laughs! I want to thank you for fighting for our country. It is much appreciated! My thoughts and prayers are with your family and Aleana. We will all see you someday soon!

Mike~

Where do I even start? It's still so hard to believe that one of our friends is gone. I know that you are in a much better place now and that you must be having the best time there, but we all miss you so much. When I think of you now I can't help but hear the song "Tears In Heaven" running through my head - and I can't say if it's going to be the same when we all get to see you again, and that being strong about everything right now is easier said than done - I know we all wish you were still here with us, but that would be very selfish on our parts - we will surely see you again someday, and that's a thought that we can all hang onto with hope and joy! Until we meet again, we'll think of you often, love you and miss you always!

Mike, I know you are in a better place watching over us. Knowing that puts minds a little at ease, but that doesn’t make the sadness any less. Your smile could brighten up a room and your laughter was contiguous, and the hilarious sense of humor will never be forgotten. You touched so many lives in the time you were here with us. I saw the more serious side of you last winter when you sat down and explained things about the army to me. We talked about so much stuff that night and im so happy that I had that chance to actualy sit down and talk to you. I think that was the same night I realized it wasn’t a good idea to let you feed my fish all those jelly beans and M&M’s. I am proud to call you a friend, and you are truly a hero to me and will always be in my thoughts and prayers. Thanks for all the laughs Goat.

Mike- All though you are not with us in person, you will always be in our hearts forever! You were a great guy that nobody will ever forget. Perhaps that was the 2nd reason people called you GOAT because you were the "Greatest Of All Time!" Your never ending stories that you would tell, nobody ever knew if they were true or if you were making it up, but regardless they were still hilarious. One of the things that sticks out in my mind is the time that you sang and danced to Neil Diamond songs in English class, and the funniest part was that you gave us all a copy of the lyrics so that we could sing along. Oh and how could I forget all the great movies that you made! Mike, these are all great memories that I will cherish forever! Although you will be sadly missed by family, friends, and other loved ones, I know that you will always be looking down on us! You are in a better place, you and your family will always be in my thoughts and prayers! Keep Singing, we love you and miss you! God Bless~

Lord, hold our troops in your loving hands. Protect them as they

protect us. Bless them and their families for the selfless acts they

perform for us in our time of need. I ask this in the name of Jesus,

our Lord and Savior. Amen.

“I’ll lend you for a little while

A child of mine,” He said.

“For you to love the while he lives

And mourn when he is dead.

It may be six or seven years, or

Twenty two or three,

But will you ’til I call him back,

Take care of him for Me?

He’ll bring his charms to gladden you,

And should his days be brief,

You’ll have his lovely memories

As solace for your grief.

I cannot promise he will stay,

Since all from earth return,

But there are lessons taught down there

I want this child to learn.

I’ve looked this wide world over

In my search for teachers true,

And from the throngs that crowd life’s lane

I have selected you.

Now will you give all your love,

Nor think the labor vain,

Nor hate me when I come to call

To take him back again?”

I fancy that I heard them say,

“Dear Lord, Thy will be done.

For all the joy this child shall bring,

The risk of grief we’ll run;

We’ll shelter him with tenderness,

We’ll love him while we may,

And for the happiness we’ve known

Forever grateful stay.

But should the angels call for him,

Much sooner then we’ve planned,

We’ll brave the bitter grief that comes.

And try to understand.” -Edgar Albert Guest

Mike I know you are in a better place, but right now that doesn't stop the hurting. I can't stop thinking about the great times we have had and how there will not be any more. I want you to know how much you mean to me and your memories will not be forgotten. I want you to do me a favor though, find a golf course you like. When it comes time for me to join you, we are playing and if need be we are wrestling on the 5th green again because Goat those are times I will truly never forget. I miss you and I can't wait to see you again.
