Steve Morin Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 30, 2005.
Steve Morin Jr. met his future wife while both were attending Texas Tech University. "It was funny because we always kept running into each other. He would hang outside my classes and wait for me with a Diet Coke," recalled Gwendolyn Morin. "He knew how to make me really happy." Morin, 34, of Arlington, Texas, was killed by a roadside bomb in Umm Qasr. He was assigned to Mineral Wells. "He always stood up for what he thought was right," said his wife. "He was a fighter. He would never give up." After graduating from high school in 1988, Morin enlisted in the Navy, serving for 14 years and specializing in aviation electronics. At Texas Tech, he earned bachelor's degrees in business and economics in 2000. "He's very strong willed, very determined. Humorous, a clown, but he was also very disciplined and very passionate about what he believed in," his wife said. "He always wanted to serve his country." He also is survived a 6-year-old son, Esteban, and a 12-year-old daughter, Brianna. "We had our whole lives ahead of us," Gwendolyn said. "He had so much potential. He was intelligent and determined."

This has taken much longer than is acceptable and I apologize. There is not a day that goes by when I do not pray for Steve and his family. I was the Commanding Officer of Camp Bucca and therefore Steve's Operational Commander in Iraq. Steve had one of the most dangerous jobs in Theater. He was calm, cool and absolutely professional. I share in the loss of his family, friends and fellow Warriors. My deepest condolences.

Father we entrust our brother Steve to your mercy. You loved him greatly in this life: now that he is freed from all its cares, give him happiness and peace forever. Welcome him now into paradise where there will be no more sorrow, no more weeping or pain, but only peace and joy with Jesus your Son, and the Holy Spirit forever and ever.
May God hold Steve in the palm of His hand. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. My deepest sympathies.

Has it been three years, my old friend? In a way it feels so much longer, because I miss your friendship. But I still feel you as a part of my life. Your unique sense of humor still resonates. Your drive and persistance still amaze. And your loyalty still inspires. At times it seems like you've never left at all.

Holding you all in my thoughts and prayers.

The Wind on The Downs

“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”

(Written by Marian Allen during World War l )

Two lines that I wish you to keep near your heart…….

“You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe”

I did not know Steve, but I am remembering
his service. He is my hero. !

The Other Side

i'm over on the other side
where life and death softly divide.
left my skin and bones behind
now i'm over on the other side.

can you feel me there with you?
my breath is gone but i'm not through.
loved you then and i still do
from over on the other side.

i can fly. really fly.
below the earth ... all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

it's good here on the other side.
the sweetest songs...the bluest skies.
thank you for the tears you cried
but it's good here on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth...all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side

the world is smaller than a needle's eye.
where life and death softly divide.
when you leave your skin and bones behind
i'll be waiting on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth ... all through the sky.
go tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

Remembering your sacrifice for Freedom & Security. I can only imagine how much your family misses you, on this second anniversary of your passing. God help them through their loss.

August 6, 2007

I don't pretend to know what to say or do that would bring you peace in your time of sorrow, but I will offer my heart felt condolences. I also offer you my prayers that in time the pain will easy and the memories of your HERO will carry you through each day and night. I want to thank your HERO, for his/her selfless act of becoming a member of the armed forces, his/her willingness to defend the United States of America, all that we hold sacred and for the sacrifice that will forever be etched in the memories of all those who knew him/her. Though tears can never bring him/her back, we hope that our tears express our gratitude for the sacrifice that he/she made and our sorrow at his/her passing. I believe for every fallen HERO there is a star shining brightly up above to remind us of the precious gift we were given.

Your mission on earth is complete and you are now a member of GOD’s Heavenly armed forces. Stand down brave warrior and take your rightful place in Heaven with all the HEROES who have passed before.

I made a special promise to LE RON A. WILSON (KIA on 07/06/07) on the day he was laid to rest as I touched his coffin, that I would never forget him nor would I forget those that gave their lives for our country before him, with him and after him and so when I came across www.legacy.com, I thought what a great way to keep my promise to Le Ron, so I will continue to leave tributes in each guest book until the day there is no longer the need to leave these tributes to a FALLEN HERO.

REST IN PEACE, HERO, YOU WILL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN!!

It has taken me a while, but it is an honor to finally sign this guestbook in honor of SGT Steve Morin. I served with him at Ft. Hood and Kuwait, but he then was one of 36 guys to get sent to Camp Bucca, Iraq. The rest of us were up north at Camp Slayer. The biggest thing I remember about this guy was his smiling face. I mean, you literally never saw the guy without a smile! I only knew him briefly, but I can tell he was one great guy. I was deeply saddened the day we found out about his demise. My heart goes out to all of his family, friends, and loved ones. Rest in peace Staff Sergeant Steve Morin, Jr. God bless. - CPL Rickey D. Atkins

To the Morin Family,

My deepest sympathies to you. I had the privledge of knowing Steve for 22 years, and over that time you all have become part of my family. "Morin" was a good man that loved his family and country, and he will be missed deeply. May God keep you in this time of great despair. I will never forget the last coversation and moments that we had in the back of my mom's house just before I left to D.C. Steve, Jay, Jacob and myself had talked until the sun came up. One thing about Morin was that he loved sharing his experiences. And boy did we love hearing them! Makes me laugh thinking of what we all talked about that night. He will be greatly missed, but I have tremendous faith that we shall see him again. God Bless you all.

Steve, thank you for your selflessness.

It is very hard to sit here and think of some way to express to you the grief that those of us who knew Steve feel, knowing that it does not even begin to approach what you are going through. So I will leave you with this. I only knew Steve slightly from train up at Ft. Hood. He was not in my platoon so I only had limited contact with him during those months there and in Kawait. He went to Bucca I went to Baghdad. So when I heard the news it took a couple of minutes for me to put the face with the name. It came to me like a light being turned on, a round face with wire framed glass's and a large grin. It was the face of man who loved life and was not afraid to let you know he did. That is how I am going to remember SGT Steve Morin.

TO THE FAMILY AND FRIENDS OF SGT STEVE MORIN.

Gwendolyn,Brianna,Esteban,Family, and Friends. I was Steve's First Sergeant during our train-up and deployment to Iraq. It has taken me some time to gather my emotions and thoughts. Reading all of the postings on this site have reinstated my faith. At first I wish to convey my sincerest sympothy and condolences to all. There are so many of us who will miss him. Many of the Soldiers in Bucca as well as his friends here in Baghdad have taken this very hard. He was such an inspiration to his fellow soldiers, on the glomiest of days he had a smile and a joke to brighten your day and lift your heart. I remember just a day like that at Fort Hood during train-up. It was bleak cold and rainy, he came into the orderly room soaked to the skin and freezing, but he was as upbeat as if we were all going to the beach to party. He was cracking jokes and just bringing everyones spirits up! Steve was a joker and love to make people smile. About three weeks ago I was in Bucca to visit with all the Soldiers there from Bravo Company 111th Engineers, I had an opportunity to talk to him for good hour or two. We talked about getting him into PLDC and his desire to go to OCS. He also talked about his family and how proud he was of you and how much he was looking forward to getting home to you. You can take great pride in Steve's service and that his sacrifice was for the greater good of all mankind. I wish I could find the words to express my feelings to you about Steve. May God watch over all of you, and take special care of you in this time of need and mourning.

There is no greater love than that of a man who lays is life down for another. Steve has done just that. He has layed down his life so that the Iraqi people have a chance at what we all sometimes take for granted, FREEDOM.

I am SGT Steve Morin's commander. I spoke at his memorial at Camp Bucca and would like to share with you some of the things I said.

- When a commander loses a soldier it destroys a part of him that he can never recover. I went on leave with Sgt Morin in mid May he told me he was going to his sister's graduation at Notre Dame. On the return visit I had the priviledge of meeting his family at the DFW airport. The following are the words that he lived by: Promise yourself to be so strong that nothing could disturb your peace of mind. Look at the sunny side of everytihng and make your optimism come true. Think only of the best, work only for the best, and expect only the best. Forget the mistakes of the past and press on to the greater achievements of the future. Give so much time to the improvement of yourself that you have no time to criticize others. Live in the faith that the whole world is on your side so long as you are true to the best that is in you!

SGT Morin I salute you

God Bless You and Thank you

The first thing that comes to mind when I think of Steve is that huge grin. The man is always looking on the brighter side of life, always looking forward to what was next. He is a great mentor, a great friend, a great leader.

"When our heroes fall, it is up to us to lift their memories."

I have a small memorial on my web boards, with images of the heroes and the memorial at Camp Bucca.

I did not know SGT Morin personnally, but I'm sure our paths crossed during our preparation for this tour. I did get to know a little about him during this past week through emails and conversations with his leadership.

SGT Steven Morin is one of the best....a leader that all soldiers look for...he will be with us always....

Steve wore size 13 extra wide boots. He was a big guy, "I'm not fat, I'm big-boned" as he liked to joke. But the biggest thing about him was his heart. He took care of his troops, not just as a sergeant, but as a friend and a great human being. He was just great to be around; you enjoyed being in his company. Everyone's saying great things about him now that he's gone, but he was one of those people that everyone said great things about while he was still here. He loved to joke, he loved to laugh, he saw the good in any situation. Even when he'd occasionally get angry at something, he would still have me laughing, and soon he would be laughing too. He was a fanatic about sports, fishing, and anything Texas Tech. He always stood up on a chair in the chow hall to turn the volume way up on the sports, then come back to the table grinning. He also had personal courage, too, and was not afraid to go 'outside the wire' even though he knew the risks. He knew he had a mission to accomplish, protecting those assigned to his care, and he carried out this mission to the end. He was a hero, an inspiration, a great father who loved his children, and he was a friend.

To The Family and Friends of Sgt.Morin....I am the grandmother of A1C Elizabeth Jacobson who was, unfortunately, in the Humvee with you when you met your untimely death. With all the chaos going around you, it is unfathomable to realize that we will never see our loved ones again. Without the support of the Air Force members, I don't know how I would get through these days. With the kind words that are written and spoken daily, it makes me thankful that Elizabeth was with a wonderful person like Steve. Anthony speaks so movingly about him and his loss of his "Dad" is going to have a great effect on him and those he counseled. The wait to bury our loved ones is difficult and without their "brothers and sisters" acknowledging their lives and times they spent with them, I don't think that I would be able to get thru these days. The memorial service that they had for our loved ones in Camp Bucca was a great tribute to our fallen heroes. It is little consolation to you to read these words at this time, but you should know that he was greatly loved and respected. I only wish that his and Elizabeth's life on this earth would have lasted forever. As terrible as this may sound, thank you for allowing Steve to accompany Elizabeth into Heaven, at least she has someone to look upon and each should keep each other company until we get to visit with them ourselves. G-d Bless you all.

I served with Steve in the Navy. We went to school together in Memphis and were both stationed at NAS Whidbey Island, Wa. I took to calling him "Chico" because he used to answer his phone, "Chico's Tacos." When he was at the Navy Academy, we visited each other often and he spent several holidays with my family. Chico had a way of endearing himself to others quickly. He called my mother "Mom" since the day he met her and she loved him for it. He was a part of my family and I will always love him like a brother. My thoughts and prayers are with Gwenn and all of their family. Fair winds and following seas, my friend.

Our deepest sympathy goes out to the family of Steve 'Chico' Morin. Though we new him only breifly, he touched our lives with his spirit, his sence of humor and his lust for life. We remember fondly the Christmas he spent with our family in Philadelphia and the great time we had at my brother's wedding in Mexico. He was a great friend to my brother Shawn. Their times together in the service and long-standing friendship since will always be remembered. The world is not the same without him. May God bless you, comfort you and keep you.

My hearfelt sympathy goes out to the family of Sgt. Morin. In ways big and small his life changed our world and left it a better place and touched to many hearts to ever be forgotten. May you find comfort in knowing how many people share your saddness. He touched my son's life in such a positive way, I'll know he'll be a better person because of knowing him. Sometimes the hurt is to big for words but Steve and his family will always be in our thoughts and in our prayers.

I am sorry for your lose. Your family is in my prayers and thoughts. I didn't know Sgt. Morin but my friend Anthony Bustos was in Iraq with him and from the way he talked, Morin was a great guy. Sgt. Morin, I love you and you will ALWAYS be my hero, my mentor, my best friend, and my "dad". I will NEVER forget you. I have so many great memories with you that I keep remembering a new one everytime I turn around. We made a pretty cool "father-son team" :). You are the only father figure I've ever had in my life, and for that, I will be deptly indebted to you and will carry you with me always in my heart. My heart goes out to your family, you talked so highly of them and so fondly of them. I miss you so much that sometimes it's just overwhelming. Our friends here have been so supportive of eachother. And to my fellow Red Raider....Wreck 'Em Tech!
