Eric A. Fifer Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Oct. 11, 2005.
Eric A. Fifer's mother said her son was an upbeat person and a devoted son. "One time when I was ill, when he was 8 years old, he would cook, lock up the house at night, help me with physical therapy," said his mother, Nancy Mellen. "You could not ask for a better son. He never complained, not once. That's the kind of person he was." Fifer, 22, of Knoxville, Tenn., was killed Oct. 7 in Haqlaniyah when his patrol was attacked by small-arms fire. He was a 2001 high school graduate and assigned to Fort Bragg. Fifer had wanted to be in the military since he was about 6 years old. His father, Bruce, retired from the Army in April as a captain. His last e-mail _ sent the night before his final mission _ unsettled some friends. "He was always a joker, and usually signed his e-mails 'Eric Fifer, Regular Guy,'" Mellen said. "But this time, there was none of the joking stuff, and he just signed it 'Eric Fifer.' My sister told me she was struck by that, too." Fifer also is survived by his stepfather, Earl; and stepmother, Sandee. His last message also made his feelings clear: "Family, friends, I love you all."

I, my 9-year-old son, and the rest of my family, live in security and peace, because men like you, give more than is ever asked of them; give more than we can imagine; give more than we can ever give.

Though I never knew you, thank God that You knew, that your service, and your warrior soul, would be another brick in the wall of heroes that buffers our country from threats that ordinary people like myself cannot bear to know. Thank you Sgt. Fifer. You shall not be forgotten.

Holding you all in my thoughts and prayers.

The Wind on The Downs

“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”

(Written by Marian Allen during World War l )

Two lines that I wish you to keep near your heart…….

“You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe”

I did not know Eric, but I am remembering

The Other Side

i'm over on the other side
where life and death softly divide.
left my skin and bones behind
now i'm over on the other side.

can you feel me there with you?
my breath is gone but i'm not through.
loved you then and i still do
from over on the other side.

i can fly. really fly.
below the earth ... all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

it's good here on the other side.
the sweetest songs...the bluest skies.
thank you for the tears you cried
but it's good here on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth...all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side

the world is smaller than a needle's eye.
where life and death softly divide.
when you leave your skin and bones behind
i'll be waiting on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth ... all through the sky.
go tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

Eric,

I miss you man! It has been over two years sense you left this world and I still think about you all the time, you have touched my life more than any of my mere words can describe. I have sense married and had a beautiful little boy. We now live in Italy and my husband is with the 173rd. This page has inspired me to create one like it for the fallen of the 173rd thus far. I also plan on majoring in humanitarian studies to help others and perhaps make a change in this vast world and you have inspired me to do so. You always thought of others and helping those in need. You were the most self-less person I have ever been blessed to meet and for that I thank you. I have sense met Flogging Molly in your honor which was a moment in life I shall never forget. I knew you were with me in that moment in time. I know you are watching over me and your family keeping us safe from worlds harm. I want to take this moment to thank you for inspiring me to better my life. To work on helping others and making a change in this world. Hoping to make a difference one day. It may not be a huge difference but if I can help a handful of people then my job is done. I thank you for showing me the way. For the inspiration and guidance. You truely are my guardian angel. I love you Eric. I love you more than words can express. I want you to know you are always thought of and never forgotten. Until we meet again!

There is nothing that I can say or do to take away the pain or bring you peace in your time of sorrow, but I will offer you and your family my heart felt condolences. I also offer you my prayers that in time the pain will easy and the memories of your HERO will carry you through each day and night. I want to thank your HERO, for his/her selfless act of becoming a member of the armed forces, his/her willingness to defend the United States of America, all that we hold sacred and for the sacrifice that will forever be etched in the memories of all those who knew him/her. Though tears can never bring him/her back, we hope that our tears express our gratitude for the sacrifice that he/she made and our sorrow at his/her passing. I believe for every fallen HERO there is a star shining brightly up above to remind us of the precious gift we were given.

Your mission on earth is complete and you are now a member of GOD’s Heavenly armed forces. Stand down brave warrior and take your rightful place in Heaven with all the HEROES who have passed before.

I made a special promise to LE RON A. WILSON, a dear family friend who joined the Army with three other friends, one of whom is my son (Le Ron was killed in action on 07/06/07 at the age of 18) on the day he was laid to rest as I touched his coffin, that I would never forget him nor would I forget those that gave their lives for our country before him, with him and after him and so when I came across www.legacy.com, I thought what a great way to keep my promise to Le Ron, so I will continue to leave tributes in each guest book until the day there is no longer the need to leave these tributes to a FALLEN HERO.

REST IN PEACE, HERO, YOU WILL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN!!

I went to high school with Eric at Greenwood High. We had JROTC together. He was such a wonderful, funloving guy. Always a joker and i can't ever remember him having a bad day. He and Futch are so much alike. He holds a permanent place in my mind. A tragic loss for certain, and his family has my deapest condolences.

I'm sorry for the loss of Eric. But I'm glad I was able to spend time with him before he passed away. There is so many things I remember about him. Like all his comic books he had. I remember packing 2 or 3 full boxes of them for him to put in storage. He even got my son addicted to them. Plus he had that huge mermaid glass table. He was definitly someone different and I'm happy for that. He could always make you laugh at anytime. It's sad we had to lose someone like him. I know he's looking down on us today and smiling though. He was always good at smiling. I'm sorry for your loss.

Psalm 23

1

The LORD is my shepherd, I shall not be in want.

2

He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters,

3

He restores my soul. He guides me in paths of righteousness for his name's sake.

4

Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.

5

You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies. You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows.

6

Surely goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the LORD forever.

This is a verse that I have found to be comforting to me during my husbands death. Remember that when it seems that no one else is round, God is still there with you! And he will be your rock!

My daughter,McKaLyne, and I send our heartfelt sympathy for your loss! God Bless this warrior, God Bless those whom serve freedom's cause! They are our true HERO's!!!!

My heart goes out to the family of this fine young man. I know the pain they are feeling for I lost the young man that died that day along with him, Nick Greer. He wasn't my son, but he lived with me for over a year and he became one of the family. I was very proud of him when he told me he was joining up. I know he and Eric were doing their job to protect us here at home and it helps alittle to know that he had a friend with him as he left this world for the next. I will keep your family in my prayers and thank-you for your ultimate sacrifice.

There are no words to truely describe what Eric meant to me. He was my best friend, my only true friend...A man I fell in love with. Eric and I had met in High School. We grew apart and several years later I get a call out of the blue, low and behold it was my Eric. Our relationship grew from friendship into love over the phone. We talked everyday for hours and hours. He would call me from the shooting range just to make me laugh to make sure I was having a nice day. Eric was truely a gentleman and the worlds greatest man that I have ever been blessed enough to meet. He tried getting me to move in with him for months and talked about a fairytale life. Where we live happily ever after. Eric was taken too soon from this world. Yet he died doing what he believed in, protecting us, and our country. To Eric:

We may not of had our chance to live our fairytale. Yet I know that your watching over me, protecting me, and your loved ones. Keeping us safe from worlds harm, something you tried to do best. Eric I love you. I miss the hell out of you. Until we meet again. You will be truely missed and loved by us all. Rest in Peace my loving hero.
