Matthew A. Kimmell Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Oct. 13, 2005.
Staff Sgt. Matthew A. Kimmell, 30, died Tuesday when a bomb exploded near a Humvee in which he was riding in the city of Muqdadiyah north of Baghdad, the Pentagon said. Kimmell was assigned to the 5th Special Forces Group based at Fort Campbell, Ky. Larry Kimmell of Paxton, the soldier's father, said Army personnel told him that two soldiers who were with his son were injured in the attack. "He was very closed-mouthed about what he did," said Larry Kimmell, the pastor of Bibleview Baptist Church in Sullivan. "He always told me, 'I want to be the kind of guy who walks the walk. Let some other guy talk the talk.' And that's what he did." Kimmell graduated from Faith Christian School in Carlisle, then attended Vincennes University before enlisting in the National Guard and later serving three years as an Army Ranger. He then worked for three years as a sheriff's deputy in Vanderburgh County, but disliked the politics associated with that job and re-enlisted in the military, said Jennifer Smith, a cousin of Kimmell's who teaches at Sullivan High School. Kimmell left in June for Iraq, slated to train other soldiers, Smith said. The soldier's hometown of Paxton in Sullivan County is about 25 miles south of Terre Haute. Kimmell's wife, Melissa, had moved to nearby Worthington from Fort Campbell after his deployment to Iraq. Kimmell is the 46th person from Indiana to have died after being sent to the Mideast since the buildup for the invasion of Iraq began in 2003.

I’ll be wearing Matt’s name on my chest as I run past the gold mile on the Indy 500 track this coming Saturday, May 7, 2022. I did not know Matt, but I have learned a little about him. I am forever grateful for our country’s servicemen and women. And regret the loss of Matt to his family and friends. Home of the free, because of the brave.

It's been many years, but I worked with Matt at the Vanderburgh County Sheriffs office. I worked in the office, and he was THE sweetest, dedicated deputy!! He took his job serious, and only wanted to perfect it. He was the epitome of a perfect officer and human being! I think of him often!!
Though, it was a short time I worked with him, he made such an impression on me and made me want to be a better person!!

Matt was an incredible person. I looked up to him during SF training, and at 5th Group. He was basically the ideal soldier, extremely intelligent, professional, and level headed. He will not be forgotten by his SF brothers.

Not a day passes that I don't think of my dear friend and teammate Matt. He was the epitome of everything that I strive to be as a soldier, a man, and a husband. Matt always chose the hard right over the easy wrong and never looked down on others that failed to make those choices the way he would. No matter what the situation, you could ALWAYS rely on Matt. It's been four and a half years now and it still pains me deeply over the loss of a great friend, man, soldier, husband. Matt will always be remembered as a saint to everyone from 581.

There is nothing that I can say or do to take away the pain or bring you peace in your time of sorrow, but I will offer you and your family my heart felt condolences. I also offer you my prayers that in time the pain will easy and the memories of your HERO will carry you through each day and night. I want to thank your HERO, for his/her selfless act of becoming a member of the armed forces, his/her willingness to defend the United States of America, all that we hold sacred and for the sacrifice that will forever be etched in the memories of all those who knew him/her. Though tears can never bring him/her back, we hope that our tears express our gratitude for the sacrifice that he/she made and our sorrow at his/her passing. I believe for every fallen HERO there is a star shining brightly up above to remind us of the precious gift we were given.

Your mission on earth is complete and you are now a member of GOD’s Heavenly armed forces. Stand down brave warrior and take your rightful place in Heaven with all the HEROES who have passed before.

I made a special promise to LE RON A. WILSON, a dear family friend who joined the Army with three other friends, one of whom is my son (Le Ron was killed in action on 07/06/07 at the age of 18) on the day he was laid to rest as I touched his coffin, that I would never forget him nor would I forget those that gave their lives for our country before him, with him and after him and so when I came across www.legacy.com, I thought what a great way to keep my promise to Le Ron, so I will continue to leave tributes in each guest book until the day there is no longer the need to leave these tributes to a FALLEN HERO.

REST IN PEACE, HERO, YOU WILL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN!!

To the Kimmell family,

I served with Matt at Ft. Benning and although it was not the greatest unit in the Army Matt had a way of making it fun. He joined my family one year for thanksgiving and what a pleasure it was to have him. Matt was a great role model and someone I definately admired for his drive to never quit. Our condolences go out to his loved ones

I HAD THE PRIVILEDGE TO NOT ONLY CALL MATT MY FRIEND, BUT ALSO PART OF MY FAMILY. I MET MATT ABOUT 6 1/2 YEARS AGO AND BECAME FRIENDS. HE WAS A VERY UNIQUE INDIVIDUAL. IF YOU EVER MET HIM, YOU NEVER FORGOT HIM. HE WAS FRIENDLY,FUNNY, CURTIOUS AND HAD A BEAUTIFUL SMILE. HE LATER BECAME FAMILY WHEN HE MARRIED MY COUSIN MYLISSA. OUR FAMILY IS SO VERY PROUD OF MATT AND ALL THE OTHER MEN & WOMEN WHO RISK THEIR LIVES FOR US. WE ARE ALSO PROUD OF MYLISSA, WHO THROUGH IT ALL, HAS STOOD TALL AND STRONG IN HER FAITH IN GOD AND HER LOVE FOR MATT AND WHO HE WAS. MATT WILL NEVER REALLY BE GONE - HE LIVES IN OUR HEARTS AND OUR THOUGHTS EVERY DAY.

There are no words to express the feelings we the people should/do have towards our men and women in uniform. If not for brave people like SSGT. Kimmell, we would all perish without a trace of our democracy.

My condolences go out to the entire Kimmell family. Although I never had the privelage of meeting Matt, I am friends with his wife Mylissa who is a remarkable, caring woman with high morals and standards... So therefore I know Matt had to be that way as well. I feel truly blessed that Matt was such a good man to bless all of us by protecting our country and our way of life. It says alot about Matt's character and raising that he was willing to go and fight for the freedom of people that he didn't even know to make sure that they had a better life. And for that, I will always be eternally greatful.

Mylissa, my heart aches for you and your family. You are in my thoughts and prayers. I am sure that Matt is as proud of you Mylissa as you are of him. I know we are all proud of him and his selfless acts.

God Bless all the soldiers, and God Bless all of you!!!

Before we deployed, I had the privilege of meeting Matt at several different schools when he first came to the unit. He was bright, confident, and intelligent but very quiet. I can remember being in one school at about 3 in the morning. I was complaining about something - I can’t remember what. I turned and looked at Matt. He just smiled at me and shook his head. No matter how rough things got Matt would just smile and drive on. I never heard him complain. I only knew Matt for a short period of time but his smile and personality I will never forget. My prayers and sympathy go out to his wife and loved ones who will miss him most. May God be with you and keep you.

To the Kimmell Family: I remember Matthew from the small church school that he and I as well as my late brother John attended in Indiana. He was truly one of our best. After My brother, Cpl. John Stalvey USMC was killed Oct. 3rd '05, I started keeping up with this website, militarycity.com. Matthew's name was the first I saw. I was crushed all over again. I miss my brother so much and so I can say that I truly know your pain. I told the First Seargent that was handling our family that we would hold up our heads that much higher and be proud of Matthews sacrifice as well. I am so sorry for your loss. My Uncle told me something that actually helped me to make sense of it all. He said," Its not a sacrifice unless it is worth something to you." I now know what actually makes this country strong, now as always we truly give our best. Stay strong for him, stay strong like him-" We shall meet on that beautiful shore" - Matt Stalvey

Your loved one was truly a heroic servant of the human race. He no doubt served an instrumental role in helping to deliver Iraq from years of torment and suffering. There truly are a large number of genuinely good people over there who deeply appreciate such scarifice. I just wish we could learn more about and hear more from those citizens- the everyday people - who know and appreciate the effort. May God give you the strength you need, and may He surround you with the peace that only He can give. - Emmanuel Baptist Church of Farmersburg, IN

To The family of Matthew A. Kimmell of Paxton, Indiana.

I just want to say that I am proud to have known such a honest brave soldier and his family. The Kimmells were a genuine family a God fearing family. These were the people that all of us looked up to and respected. They are the example, they are a good mentor. May God be with each member of Matthew's family and give them Grace, courage and strength in the days to come. I am honored to be neighbors with Matthews Parents, siblings and grandmother. I didn't get a chance to thank Matthew for protecting all of us here in the United States but we all can support our troops and pray daily for them and our country. As I am driving to work today, I look around and see the flags flying at half mast and the 500 plus flags along the street to your parents home and realize this effects everyone, this war keeps hitting closer and closer to home. Matthew may be gone but he will not be forgotten. We need to pray for peace.

May God bless you in a very special way, as He took a very special person from this world to be with Him. I thank God every day for men like your son who are willing to fight for our freedom and the freedom of oppressed nations. I know Matthew has made a difference in every life he has touched. God bless everyone in his family

Lord, hold our troops in your loving hands. Protect them as they

protect us. Bless them and their families for the selfless acts they

perform for us in our time of need. I ask this in the name of Jesus,

our Lord and Savior. Amen.
