Hey brother! 19 years, I can't believe it's been so long. I appreciate the sacrifice you made for this country, your fellow Marines and your family. We can live in peace knowing there are brave men like you that exist. We will never forget you, and we will honor your memory by being great husbands, great fathers and great men.

We had a chance to get together a few months ago, and we shared some great memories and had a lot of laughs. Miss you bro.

Hey bro,
I sure do miss you. I think about you all the time, and how influential you were. When anyone needed a lift of spirit, you were there with your ever present, infectious smile, which you always wore ear-to-ear. I will never forget the times on our first tour when we would get to listen to music and talk. I recently attended Elton John's farewell concert and I couldn't keep my eyes dry for most of the show because he played ALL of the songs that are embedded with timelessness in my memories of you. It's been 18 years since the last time I heard your voice, when you called out my name so that we could chat at ECP 5. That was right before you stepped off for your last patrol and I crumbled inside when, not much later, I heard your info come across the radio. If I had known that those were the last words I would get to say to you, I would have said so much more, or at least I would have made you laugh harder. Im so grateful that God arranged for our paths to cross one last time, my brother.
It's been 6 years since the birth of my youngest son and I found that it was only appropriate to give him a name with deep meaning. David started kindergarten this year. He makes me proud every day, just like all my memories of you.
Most sincerely,
-JB-

David,

I was thinking about you and your family today ... you intuitively knew the joy and sense of purpose that only comes through great challenge and subordination to a calling greater than self ... you knew what it meant to keep company with the finest men and women in a world under the toughest conditions ... you lived your life right and to the fullest. Happy 240th Birthday Marine! With great respect and fidelity,

David, it has been a very long time since that day we lost one of our own in combat. I still think of you everyday. It saddens me to think that you were so young and full of life. I wish everyday that I could have taken your place. But god has a plan for all of us and when he calls us home, it is time to go. I will see you on the streets of heaven. One day we will stand together again.

My Darling Brother, It finally happened, we had an amazing ceremony celebrating and honoring you. Your friends from 2/7 WPNS were here, they stayed with me and I had a blast, that little David is something really special, and The SgtMaj of the Marine Corps was in attendance it was big just like you deserved. Thank you my brother for your sacrifice. I will love you forever. Leo and you my two children, I lost you, Leo follows your footsteps and doing well, I love my son and now have great sons from 2/7 WPNS, I love them all. I miss you and love you.

I read the messages from your family, and the emotions hit me like a ton of bricks. I still think about you a lot, your family, and even though your sister some times calls, I don't have the strength to pick up. I miss Ace too, I read about him and it tears me up.

I have a family now, and a son. His name is Zack, I think you would have liked him.

I just want you to know Dave, that you were the best friend I've ever had. And while there are a lot of us that can say that, you helped me through some rough times and I just want to say thank you. I miss you brother and I look forward to the day we can some day talk again.

Thank you for being the man you were.

I know we cant wait for the day when your family will see you again, and I will have the utmost honor to shake your hand and thank you for your act of bravey.

To David's family/friends: please contact me it's important that David's act of bravey does not goes unnotice, and I am very determine to do whatever it takes to have a plaque erect on a local street, highway or even have the Fulton Road bridge renamed in his honor.

I visited the Memorial for Fallen Heroes on Veteran's Day this year and found David's marker. I was so touched to see the Star of David among all the crosses and it reminded me how important freedom is for all of us and that we have those freedoms in life and in death. I will carry David and his family in my heart and pray that your memories will bring you comfort. God Bless.

Yesterday was our day, Veterans Day. After work I came over to the Ohio Fallen Hero Memorial. I took the time to view every Soldiers Memorial. I than I drove over to Forest Lawn Garden Cemetery, this is where the Medal of Honor Memorial is. Whan I got there I met a mother that was visiting in honor of her son who was on the wall, he died in 2000. We spoke for about 45 min. about her son, also of the brave men and women that had given there lifes sense 911. After she was gone I stood there among all those Heroes and thanked God that we had all you heroes in our Military. Life is a wonderful gift and that gift you gave to America, I want to thank you David and your family for my gift of Freedom.

Dear Lance CPL David A. Mendez-Ruiz and to his entire familia:

You have been in my thoughts for the last week; although I never meet you, nor your family. I feel that I have gotten to know you in the last 4+ years, as I read your guestbook on a regular basis.

A thought cross my mind during this past week, while on the local highway, that the are signs memorializing other brave man and women, YET there's no sign on I-90, I-71 to honor you!!!!

Con el pelmiso de tu familia (with your family's permission.) I would like to start a campigan/petition drive to honor you with a sign on either the street you grew up on or the highway closest to you parents home.

That will read "The Lance CPL David A. Mendez-Ruiz Memorial Highway" or "The Lance CPL David A. Mendez-Ruiz Memorial Street"

I would like and hope to have to this in place by your 25th birthday, but no later then the 5th anniversary of your going home to be with our Lord and Savior--Jesuscristo

Dear Mendez-Ruiz family,
I read Sandra's letters to David in the Guest Book, and all the other letters. He sounds like a wonderful person. I belong to the Prayer Shawl Ministry at my church and we belong to the national group PS4FS (Prayer Shawls for Fallen Soldiers). We send out prayer shawls to anyone in a family who wants one of a fallen soldier hero, which David certainly was. We do this to honor their memory, to show you that they are not forgotten, and to show you our gratitude at his and your ultimate sacrifice. If we can do this for you, please contact me, we would be honored. Thank you and God Bless you.

The Wind on The Downs

“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”

(Written by Marian Allen during World War l )

Two lines that I wish you to keep near your heart…….

“You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe”

I did not know David, but I am remembering
his service and sacrifice. He is my hero. !

The Other Side

i'm over on the other side
where life and death softly divide.
left my skin and bones behind
now i'm over on the other side.

can you feel me there with you?
my breath is gone but i'm not through.
loved you then and i still do
from over on the other side.

i can fly. really fly.
below the earth ... all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

it's good here on the other side.
the sweetest songs...the bluest skies.
thank you for the tears you cried
but it's good here on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth...all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side

the world is smaller than a needle's eye.
where life and death softly divide.
when you leave your skin and bones behind
i'll be waiting on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth ... all through the sky.
go tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

There is nothing that I can say or do to take away the pain, so I will not pretend that I know what to say or do that would bring you peace in your time of sorrow, but I will offer my heart felt condolences. I also offer you my prayers that in time the pain will easy and the memories of your HERO will carry you through each day and night. I want to thank your HERO, for his/her selfless act of becoming a member of the armed forces, his/her willingness to defend the United States of America, all that we hold sacred and for the sacrifice that will forever be etched in the memories of all those who knew him/her. Though tears can never bring him/her back, we hope that our tears express our gratitude for the sacrifice that he/she made and our sorrow at his/her passing. I believe for every fallen HERO there is a star shining brightly up above to remind us of the precious gift we were given.

Your mission on earth is complete and you are now a member of GOD’s Heavenly armed forces. Stand down brave warrior and take your rightful place in Heaven with all the HEROES who have passed before.

I made a special promise to LE RON A. WILSON (KIA on 07/06/07) on the day he was laid to rest as I touched his coffin, that I would never forget him nor would I forget those that gave their lives for our country before him, with him and after him and so when I came across www.legacy.com, I thought what a great way to keep my promise to Le Ron, so I will continue to leave tributes in each guest book until the day there is no longer the need to leave these tributes to a FALLEN HERO.

REST IN PEACE, HERO, YOU WILL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN!!

To David's family and friends-

My family and I are praying for you and your family during this difficult time. We send our deepest empathy as we lost our Marine on 11/30/05 in Fallujah. We are comforted to know that our Marines are serving their country with such honor and bravery. We are so proud of our Marines and all of our other service men and women for all that they have done and continue to do to keep us safe and to give us the freedom we have that so many take for granted.

They are true Heroes and need to always be remembered for their selflessness and sacrifice to better our world. We will forever be united in the loss of our heros. We are so sorry for your loss and hope our words will ease some of the pain, and maybe fill some of your emptiness.

I knew david ever since i was a little girl. He went to my church for some time. He had a smile that would brighten the whole world. He was real close to my family. He was like a son to my parents and a brother to me. I cant believe he is gone. he used to aways wear a black trench coat, black sunglasses, and racing gloves. he looked like the one off of the matrix. We laughed and cried but we aways had a good time. In rememberence to a great hero David Mendez.

Dearest Sandy and Leo, My heart grieves with you today. Mixed in that grief is a sense of pride to have known David. Sandy you talked about David with such pride and love. I felt I knew him better through you.

David, thank you for your patriotism and love for the United States of America. Your sacrifice makes me proud to be an American. I salute you and bid you farewell until we are joined together again to celebrate the final victory in Jesus Christ.
