Robert A. Martinez Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Dec. 4, 2005.
From Iraq, Robert A. Martinez called his mother with exciting news: "He said, ''Mom, go to Zale''s and buy a carat-and-a-half diamond _ I''m coming home,''" Kelly Hunt said. The ring was intended for his girlfriend''s finger. "He always did the right thing," said Lorene Gonzalez, his aunt. "He wanted to do it right when he came home." Martinez, 20, of Splendora, Texas, was killed Dec. 1 by an explosive in Fallujah. He graduated high school in 2003 and was assigned to Twentynine Palms. "Robbie was one of those students you love to have around school," said his former principal, Mike Ogden. "He was just one of those kids you just felt good to be around." Martinez was a baseball pitcher at the school and dreamed of getting his education degree and coaching the sport, Ogden said. He loved barbecuing and spending time with family and friends. Martinez always asked his family to send him treats for Iraqi children. "Every time we sent a package, he always requested as much candy as the box would hold. He was like a big Santa Claus," said his stepfather, Jeremy Hunt. He also is survived by his father, James Kevin McGehee.

To the family of Robbie Martinez -- I had the most privileged opportunity to carry the portrait of this remarkable young man in the 2015 Dallas Veteran's Day parade. I wanted you to know that he was remembered and honored and saluted by many veterans and Americans as his face made its way through the streets of downtown Dallas. I hope this brings a smile to your face knowing that though your son is gone, his memory lives on and the sacrifice he paid is so graciously appreciated. May God bless you all.

Holding you all in my thoughts and prayers.

The Wind on The Downs

“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”

(Written by Marian Allen during World War l )

Two lines that I wish you to keep near your heart…….

“You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe”

I did not know Robert, but I am remembering
his service and sacrifice. He is my hero. !

The Other Side

i'm over on the other side
where life and death softly divide.
left my skin and bones behind
now i'm over on the other side.

can you feel me there with you?
my breath is gone but i'm not through.
loved you then and i still do
from over on the other side.

i can fly. really fly.
below the earth ... all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

it's good here on the other side.
the sweetest songs...the bluest skies.
thank you for the tears you cried
but it's good here on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth...all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side

the world is smaller than a needle's eye.
where life and death softly divide.
when you leave your skin and bones behind
i'll be waiting on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth ... all through the sky.
go tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

My Dearest Kelly, as Dec 1st, 2007, fast aproaches, I wanted you to know that today, as everyday, Robby still lives on in my thoughts and you are still in my prayers. I dont believe that there will ever be a day when we, Your friends and family, will ever forget the memorise we have of Robby. I love you.

August 14, 2007

There is nothing that I can say or do to take away the pain or bring you peace in your time of sorrow, but I will offer you and your family my heart felt condolences. I also offer you my prayers that in time the pain will easy and the memories of your HERO will carry you through each day and night. I want to thank your HERO, for his/her selfless act of becoming a member of the armed forces, his/her willingness to defend the United States of America, all that we hold sacred and for the sacrifice that will forever be etched in the memories of all those who knew him/her. Though tears can never bring him/her back, we hope that our tears express our gratitude for the sacrifice that he/she made and our sorrow at his/her passing. I believe for every fallen HERO there is a star shining brightly up above to remind us of the precious gift we were given.

Your mission on earth is complete and you are now a member of GOD’s Heavenly armed forces. Stand down brave warrior and take your rightful place in Heaven with all the HEROES who have passed before.

I made a special promise to LE RON A. WILSON, a dear family friend who joined the Army with three other friends, one of whom is my son (Le Ron was killed in action on 07/06/07 at the age of 18) on the day he was laid to rest as I touched his coffin, that I would never forget him nor would I forget those that gave their lives for our country before him, with him and after him and so when I came across www.legacy.com, I thought what a great way to keep my promise to Le Ron, so I will continue to leave tributes in each guest book until the day there is no longer the need to leave these tributes to a FALLEN HERO.

REST IN PEACE, HERO, YOU WILL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN!!

To the family of LCpl. Martinez ~

We have never met, but share the same pain. My brother, LCpl. Scott T. Modeen, died alongside Robert on Dec. 1st. I know they are together, guarding the gates of heaven. I'm sure they're looking down on us, wishing they could take away our pain. People tell me that things will get easier, and I pray that they are right. It is hard losing them so young, but I am proud of the sacrifice they have made so that we can continue to live in freedom.

LCpl. Martinez, you will never be forgotten!

For Kelly, Candice, Mikey,& Jeremy,

With every flood of sadness that seems to overtake you..Stop and remember a happy moment with Robby..It will never take the pain away but it will ease it for a moment.

Bethany was remembering when Robby, Mikey and Anthony thought it would be cool to go outside and jump on the trampoline during a hail storm (Lee Turner Road Days) She said that all the boys put on several pairs of socks and clothes and one of them had on a football helment...She said it looked like a giant slushie bouncing up and down...She and Candice laughed so hard...

Travis was telling me how much fun (and trouble they got in) at Spina Bifida Camp. They took their rollerblades and after every one was asleep (or so they thought)! They had to sneek out to skate up and down all the trails at Camp for All...They got caught by one of the guys driving a golf cart but it took him a while to do it!! Robby also loved the kids even then...helping them to do things that most handicapped children would not get to do ...from going swimming to climbing a 4 story tower and riding a zip line to the bottom! And of course there was the whole "Don't go in the creek without your shoes." incident!!!

Robby was a hero that day as he helped Travis back to the house with his toe nearly cut off!!

It makes me smile to remember Robby and Mike playing catch on the beach in California. Mike's hand was stinging that day from the fastballs Robby was hurling at him...He was so glad to be able to play ball after bootcamp. And do you remember driving around the Marine Corp Depot! We were yelling from the car that we had made it and we would see him in the morning!!!(Knowing he couldnt hear us, but we didn't care!!!)You kept yelling how much you loved him!!! and how we tried coming up with different ways to get in that night without getting caught!!

I remember trying to get Robby to smile at the Marine Corp Depot after the Eagle, Globe and Anchor Ceremony. He told me he might get in trouble if he smiled. I told him that you had spent a lot of money on those teeth and he better show them off. He finally did.

So there are a few happy thoughts to make you smile today.

I wish with all my being that I had enough to fill your heart forever so you would never hurt again. I love you all.

On behalf of my family, I would like to extend our deepest condolences to the Martinez family. The loss of a young life is a very difficult thing. Know that Robert served with Honor, Courage, Dignity, and Valor, and we as citizens of this great nation thank him for his service and thank you for your sacrifice. Only those who have also endured such a loss can understand the deep empty void that remains at their passing. Our deepest sympathy for your loss, a father of Fallen Hero LCpl Andrew Kilpela, on 06/10/2005.

I'm very sorry for the loss of the Martinez family.. I knew Robert (Robbie) since I came to CHS, he was my first friend there.. Robbie always knew how to make people smile & when there down he knew a way to cheer them up.. He was very loved & still is.. Everyone loved Robbie & was very popular with everyone. Robbie may be gone from here but he's not from our hearts, & we'll all see him one day again. Robbie loved baseball as well as the marines & he passed away doing what he loves doing, saving the U.S... I'll never forget you Robbie..

I grew up with Robby as my cousin. He was always one of the though guys at a family gatherings. i remember him and the rest of the boys would go out front and start a little football game and it would end up as a wrestling match and some one would always get hurt or get mad. but it was okay. When i first found out that this had happend to Robby i thought to myself and ask God why. but now when i think about it its like remembering a hero. i told my little brother(wyatt) about my thoughts and he told me it was because thats Robby, Robby is a hero.

To the Martinez family and friends, my deepest sympathy and prayers. I'm from the Houston area and lost my brother Lcpl Phillip George, a marine, three months ago in Afghanistan. I know the loss of your son, brother and friend is painful, but he was not lost in vain. He served his country with honor and he gave his life protecting our freedom and way of life. This is one more person who appreciates his sacrifice and I will forever be greatful to Lcpl. Martinez for his courageous service to the nation. Thank you for sharing him with us. Again my thoughts and prayers are with you during this difficult time. And please know that there are more marine families out there praying for you than you will ever know.

Dearest Kelly,

There are no words for this. Just know that we are are all on our way. Keep in mind it's not a loss. Look at it as if he moved to another town and was stationed somewhere where the ranks are very high. God has already blessed your family and he will continue. I promise. Just think, he has your son standing next to him.

To Robbie's Family:

When I think of Robbie, I think of the crazy days of 8th, 9th and 10th grade, before they all started driving themselves. I can't tell you how many trips my van took to where ever they (Robbie, Rob, Justin W., Mike, Jake, Cody, etc.) wanted to go. Usually Jarabeth was the only girl. We had some great times. Robbie always had a way of making you laugh. Then I watched them all grow up and become young men in high school. Robbie loved being a Marine. He is our Hero. Cleveland High School has been touched by him and we will never forget. Our thoughts are with you always.
