Lance M. Chase Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jan. 27, 2006.
A former detention officer at the Oklahoma County jail was killed in Iraq when the tank he was riding in ran over a homemade bomb, the Oklahoma County Sheriff's Office said Wednesday. Army Staff Sgt. Lance Chase, 32, and Pfc. Peter Wagler, 18, of Partridge, Kan., were conducting patrols when the bomb exploded, killing both men, the Department of Defense said. Both were assigned to the 1st Battalion, 12th Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division at Fort Hood.
"My son truly believed in the mission in Iraq and in helping the Iraqi people," Dana Chase said. "He always felt his heart warmed to know they appreciated what he was doing."
This was Chase's second tour of duty for Operation Iraqi Freedom, family members said. He returned to Iraq beginning in December.
"We're proud of him," said Chase's maternal grandmother, Lillian Haynie. "We'd liked to have kept him, but I guess God seen other things for him."
Chase's military duties were focused on the Abrams tank, Dana Chase pointed out. He taught recruits how to maintain and move it.
"He did it all on that tank," his mother said.
He also was an honored marksman, she said.
Chase leaves behind his wife, Kristen, and two sons, Brett, 11, and Trevor, 9.
"I don't even know where to start," his wife said. "He was just an all-around kind of guy."
A 1991 graduate of Midwest City High School, Chase spent 20 months working for the Oklahoma County Sheriff's Office as a detention officer in 1994 and 1995. His father, Mike Chase, is a reserve officer and member of the sheriff's bomb squad.

Lance M. Chase's biggest joy in Iraq was seeing local children returning to schools. After his first tour, he got involved in sending books and hygiene items to the Iraqi people. "It was important to him," said his mother, Dana Chase.
Chase, 32, of Oklahoma City, was killed Jan. 23 by a roadside bomb in Baghdad. He was assigned to Fort Hood and was on his second tour.
"He would smile all the time and always had a joke for everyone," said his mother.
He was a 1991 high school graduate, where he played football and was a fan of NASCAR.
"We are devastated as anyone would be," said Capt. Kelly Marshall, of the sheriff's department. "We consider Mike and his family our family."

--

Relatives and friends bid farewell Thursday to an Oklahoma City soldier who was remembered for his courage and dedication to family.
Mourners filled Meadowood Baptist Church for the funeral of Staff Sgt. Lance Michael Chase, 32.
Music chosen by his relatives highlighted Chase's funeral, from Tim McGraw's "Live Like You Were Dying," a song about living life to the fullest, to Tommy Shane Steiner's "What If She Is An Angel," a Chase used to sing to his son Trevor, 9.
Those songs were among nine selected for a ceremony that included a uniformed contingent from the military and the Oklahoma County Sheriff's Department. Chase's father, Mike, has been a reserve deputy for more than 20 years.
Pastor Bob Rutherford called Chase a hero for his willingness to risk his life for others.
Chase, who had been a soldier for more than a decade, didn't like to be away from his family but was honored to help the people of Iraq, Rutherford said.
After Chase started his second tour of duty, he noted improvements in the country.
"It wasn't just a job for him," Rutherford said. "He said, 'These people need what we're doing.'"
Rutherford said Chase's life was characterized by his love for his family.
Chase visited his grandmother before he left for Iraq just so he could tell her he loved her, the pastor said. He talked to his wife, Kristen, via the Internet before his final patrol.
Rutherford thanked Chase for deciding to join the Army and standing up for others.
"Your life, young man, will always be an inspiration to me," he said.

I've had a herobracelet with Lance's info since I was a high school sophomore in 2012, and I just decided to look up his name. I am at a loss for words with the number of coincidences I found today which brought me to view this webpage.
Of all the herobracelets to choose from that day, I picked Lance's because I also wanted to join the Army at that time. I enlisted in 2014 and eventually commissioned/deployed, by coincidence, to the same location Lance passed -- I have always worn his bracelet in uniform. I've had a fondness of 4ID's patch since high school and have had it hanging in my room since; I even have it hanging in my office at work. I had no idea until today that Lance was in 4ID.
This morning I happened to check the date and noticed 1/23/23 to ring a bell, and I realized this was the day Lance died 17 years ago.
It's amazing to read everyone's messages here. I recently took command of my company, and upholding Lance's and everyone's legacy here is my newly-found motivation to bring honor to my unit.
Thank you everyone for what you've written here.

Sgt. Chase was my first line supervisor. I spent almost a year with him. He was such a down to earth man. He had such a sense of humor and loved being in the tank. I will miss him and love to get into contact with his family to pay my respects and any other of his soldiers

To the family and friends of Staff Sgt. Lance M. Chase:
It has truly been my honor to sign Lance's guest book these past few years. Unfortunately, due to complications from my Multiple Sclerosis, this may be the last message I'm able to write. Please forgive me and know that Lance will always be remembered in my home.

To the family of SSG Chase,
I met SSG CHase in Fort Hood Tx, while the 4th brigade was being activated. As a new soldier in the Army, and new to a little town away from hme for the first time, he took the time to always cheer me up and try to introduce me to activities and places on post like the education center. His sense of humor made the days in the HHC a little bit better and even PT fun. At the time SSG Holder and him were in charged of every new soldier and they both tried their best teaching us how to become successful in the Army.
The day before his passing, I saw him right outside the DFAC and even though i was jot longer his soldier he asked how was i doing? Then borrowed a memory drive so he can get some music for his troops. The day of his accident was our first casualti. I couldnt believe it. The day of his ceremony felt like a bad dream, the chapel didnt seem big enough for everyone. I remember looking down and my tears over flowing my face and trying not to cry or make a noise as everyone else did as well. Some couldnt make it to your service but whenthey had the chance to make it to FOB Prosperity they will write down or just stand up by your picture in the memorial wall.
Thank you for all the help and support
Cobra Brigade!

The flag is flying in the sky
A daily reminder of who and why
We sit here remembering them today
These heroes that now lie in their grave.

While here on earth, the bravest ones
A soldier, a mother, a daughter, a son
The father's who went far off to war
To ensure our safety and so much more

To keep our children happy and free,
Someone must do this job, you see
So, today remember the soldiers who served,
Because this is one thing they truly deserve.

The loved one's that they have left behind,
The Gold Star mothers, like your and mine
We honor them proudly, every day
Our American Soldier...Proud and Brave
By Shannon Williams-Austill

I want to thank this soldier for their sacrifice.
And, I wish to extend my deepest regards to the loved ones they have left behind. Their service to our nation, has not gone unnoticed. They are our heroes, who paid the ultimate price for us, and that is something that every American needs to be reminded of and remember everyday.
The freedom we all have, we have because of brave young men and women who made a choice to defend and serve.
Today, let me remember your loved one with you.

I came across an obituary for Lance today while searching for members of my family on Google. Lance was my 3rd cousin. His mom, Dana, is my second cousin ( I have met her twice . Lance's grandfather Audrey and my grandmother Lottie were brother & sister. Kristen and Dana, I am so very sorry for your loss. I remember Uncle Audrey talking about Lance the last couple times I saw him. I am at a complete loss for words here. But after reading a few stories on the internet about Lance, I am so very proud to call this man my cousin. Kristen, I hope you and your boys are doing well. And Dana, I hope you remember me, because I remember you. I will keep you both in my prayers.

Holding you all in my thoughts and prayers.

The Wind on The Downs

“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”

(Written by Marian Allen during World War l )

Two lines that I wish you to keep near your heart…….

“You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe”

The Other Side

i'm over on the other side
where life and death softly divide.
left my skin and bones behind
now i'm over on the other side.

can you feel me there with you?
my breath is gone but i'm not through.
loved you then and i still do
from over on the other side.

i can fly. really fly.
below the earth ... all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

it's good here on the other side.
the sweetest songs...the bluest skies.
thank you for the tears you cried
but it's good here on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth...all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side

the world is smaller than a needle's eye.
where life and death softly divide.
when you leave your skin and bones behind
i'll be waiting on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth ... all through the sky.
go tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

There is nothing that I can say or do to take away the pain or bring you peace in your time of sorrow, but I will offer you and your family my heart felt condolences. I also offer you my prayers that in time the pain will easy and the memories of your HERO will carry you through each day and night. I want to thank your HERO, for his/her selfless act of becoming a member of the armed forces, his/her willingness to defend the United States of America, all that we hold sacred and for the sacrifice that will forever be etched in the memories of all those who knew him/her. Though tears can never bring him/her back, we hope that our tears express our gratitude for the sacrifice that he/she made and our sorrow at his/her passing. I believe for every fallen HERO there is a star shining brightly up above to remind us of the precious gift we were given.

Your mission on earth is complete and you are now a member of GOD’s Heavenly armed forces. Stand down brave warrior and take your rightful place in Heaven with all the HEROES who have passed before.

I made a special promise to LE RON A. WILSON, a dear family friend who joined the Army with three other friends, one of whom is my son (Le Ron was killed in action on 07/06/07 at the age of 18) on the day he was laid to rest as I touched his coffin, that I would never forget him nor would I forget those that gave their lives for our country before him, with him and after him and so when I came across www.legacy.com, I thought what a great way to keep my promise to Le Ron, so I will continue to leave tributes in each guest book until the day there is no longer the need to leave these tributes to a FALLEN HERO.

REST IN PEACE, HERO, YOU WILL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN!!

I am Deeply Saddened to learn of the loss of this Fine Soldier, one year ago today.
The price Staff Sgt. Lance M. Chase and his family have paid for this country and for freedom, Will Never Be Forgotten.
May he rest safely in the Loving Care of God and may the Peace of the Lord be with the Chase family.
There will never be enough ways to humbly thank these heroes for their Supreme Sacrifice, my brother among them. KIA~Vietnam, 1967.

"Cast thy burden upon the Lord,
and He shall sustain thee."
~ Psalm 55:22 ~

May the Peace of God and your memories of Lance, remain in your heart always.
May this give you comfort and strength through the difficult days.
You are in my thoughts and prayers and I am deeply sorry for your loss.

Dear Kristen, Brett and Trevor and the rest of Lance’s family:

I am deeply saddened to see that your soldier has been KIA in Iraq. Our family wants you to know that we grieve with you over the loss of another precious soul such as Lance. I know from first hand experience what you are feeling and what you must be going through since I lost my son SFC Brent A. Adams in Ramadi, Iraq on December 1, 2005.

I know there is nothing I can say at this point in time that will ease your pain and sorrow over the terrible loss of your brave and courageous husband Lance. We know your hearts are broken and devastated and there is now a void and deep sadness in your heart that will never be filled. It is like a scar that will always remain with you. May it help you to know that there are others who share your pain, your agony and your sorrow over this terrible loss. While the pain will probably never leave but lessen some with time, we pray the Lord gives you comfort, peace and strength to help you cope with this earth shattering loss no parent, spouse or child ever wants to experience.

This is an extremely difficult time, but hold on to those wonderful memories of your brave soldier….the ones that make you laugh and remember with joy the moments that you shared. The laughter between all those tears is one of the ways that will help you work through your grief. Lance is a hero (a man admired for his achievements and noble qualities) and even though we were not fortunate enough to know him we pray for you and all your family and for all those men and women serving our country so valiantly. Our soldiers have made the ultimate sacrifice and they will always be honored and never forgotten. Unfortunately these tragic events have bound all of us together and changed our lives forever. God Bless you and all those who mourn the loss of OUR FALLEN HEROES and thank you for the courageous service your soldier preformed for all of us. We wait for the day we can be reunited once again with our loved ones in the Lord’s House. You now have your own guardian angel to watch over all of you.

There is a Middle East Memorial Wall in Marseilles, IL to honor all those heroes who have given their lives for us beginning with the bombing of the American Embassy in Beruit in 1983 through the present. My husband Jack and I visited the wall several weeks ago to get some etchings of Brent’s name on the wall. It is a beautiful Memorial located along the river. Your Lance will forever be remembered by us because we have a dog tag for him that we received when we visited the wall. In fact, I am wearing it right now. The IL Freedom Run Motorcycle group sells these random tags so no fallen hero will ever be forgotten. I am proud and honored to wear this tag in memory of your loved one Lance. It would be great to hear from you so you could tell us more about Lance and how you and your boys are doing.

We were classmates with Lance growing up and feel extremely privileged to have known him. We too remember him beaming with pride at the reunion, it was something we’ll never forget. What a devastating loss. His smile was infectious and he was always a joy to talk to. Our deepest sympathy goes out to the family, you will be in our prayers. Lance is a true Hero!

Kristen~ I don't if you remember me or not..Laurie Gilpin in school. I also knew Lance back when we were in school. Use to hang out at the bowling alley and play pool and such with him and my brother at bowling green. Lance was a good person, always joking. I send my condolences and prayers to you, your children and the rest of the Chase family. SO very SORRY about your loss. May God Bless you~

At our High School Reunion Banquet Lance was so proud to wear his uniform, and proud of the job he did. I wish I had the words to comfort you and take away your pain, but I don't. I can tell you that he will be remembered everyday by the men and women of the US Army.

SSG Chase, I had the pleasure of serving with you at Fort Riley, Korea and I also had the privilige of being one of your instructors at PLDC. You are, without a doubt, a professional soldier who will be missed by many. GOD BLESS (DUTY FIRST) (FIRST TANK)

To the Family of SSG Lance M. Chase.

I would like to extend my sincere apologies and thanks. I know the loss of your loved one is hard. Just remember there are Americans out there that still appreciate soldiers like yours that give the ultimate sacrifice.

I know what you are going through. Please know that if you need anything. Even just someone who can listen and know how you feel I am here.

To the Family of Staff Sgt. Lance M. Chase:

I know first hand there are no words right now that will bring you the comfort and peace you need. Just know that you are not alone. My heart, thoughts, and prayers are with you all as you mourn this loss. We don't know each other, will probably never meet, but will forever be united in the loss of our Heroes. We have, unfortunately joined a group, an ever-growing group of families in this situation. May God grant you peace and strength to get through this and be able once again to smile at a memory rather than have only the tears that flow so easily now. If you ever want to talk, I'm only an e:mail away. God Bless this courageous soldier and his family.

Kristen, please know that David and I are here if you need anything. Lance was a great man and my husband was honored to serve in 1-12 with him for the short year he did. We loved listening to his jokes, hearing him wisecrack about how the Army was better than the Marine Corp, and seeing him smile. Know that you and he were and will always be dear to our hearts. He will be sorely missed. Please know you are in our prayers and thoughts as well as our hearts.

Psalm 23

1

The LORD is my shepherd, I shall not be in want.

2

He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters,

3

He restores my soul. He guides me in paths of righteousness for his name's sake.

4

Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.

5

You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies. You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows.

6

Surely goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the LORD forever.

This is a verse that I have found to be comforting to me during my husbands death. Remember that when it seems that no one else is round, God is still there with you! And he will be your rock!

My daughter,McKaLyne, and I send our heartfelt sympathy for your loss! God Bless this warrior, God Bless those whom serve freedom's cause! They are our true HERO's!!!!

If you need anything, please feel free to contact me!!!
