Hello,

We apologize for being so late in expressing our deepest condolences to you and your family. We want you to know that we will be sending Care Packages to deployed troops this holiday season and several of these will be dedicated to your loved one. Each package will carry the name, photo, service branch, rank and hometown of Matthew L. Bertolino US Marine Private 1st Class.

We realize that this is a small tribute, but we do this with all respect and sincerity and we want you to know that it is made possible by thousands of like-minded individuals from across the American youth hockey community, their families, friends and others who support our mission.

We will not forget. May God Bless you and keep you safe and strong.

Sincerely,

I can't believe 2 years have passed since you've been gone. I drove by your house not too long ago and half expected you to come out.. I think it's still so weird and new that I just expect sometimes you will be there. Maybe it's just that I'm tired of having to remember or that it hurts too much. I just hope you are safe up there. and I pray that you are happy and looking down. Coming to this site still brings tears to my eyes. Looking at that smile we all know and love that can now only be seen in pictures or our memory... it hurts. Like I remember where I was on 9/11, what class, how I felt... it's what I feel when I think of the day I got that horrible call from Beth... I know what I was doing, where I was, how I felt. And every time another year goes by and that day approaches, I get that same feeling all over again. Matt, you meant so much to so many people, some of whom you've never met, and I know that people are still remembering you, laughing with you, and crying for you. We all love you so much and you deserved so much more. You fought and died for this country without a second glance at what might be. You are true hero for doing what is right even if it killed you. I look up to you in so many ways, Matt, and I hope you know how much I love you. I pray for you and your family EVERY day. Rest in peace, Marine... our very own, hometown hero. :)

Rest In Peace

There is nothing that I can say or do to take away the pain or bring you peace in your time of sorrow, but I will offer you and your family my heart felt condolences. I also offer you my prayers that in time the pain will easy and the memories of your HERO will carry you through each day and night. I want to thank your HERO, for his/her selfless act of becoming a member of the armed forces, his/her willingness to defend the United States of America, all that we hold sacred and for the sacrifice that will forever be etched in the memories of all those who knew him/her. Though tears can never bring him/her back, we hope that our tears express our gratitude for the sacrifice that he/she made and our sorrow at his/her passing. I believe for every fallen HERO there is a star shining brightly up above to remind us of the precious gift we were given.

Your mission on earth is complete and you are now a member of GOD’s Heavenly armed forces. Stand down brave warrior and take your rightful place in Heaven with all the HEROES who have passed before.

I made a special promise to LE RON A. WILSON, a dear family friend who joined the Army with three other friends, one of whom is my son (Le Ron was killed in action on 07/06/07 at the age of 18) on the day he was laid to rest as I touched his coffin, that I would never forget him nor would I forget those that gave their lives for our country before him, with him and after him and so when I came across www.legacy.com, I thought what a great way to keep my promise to Le Ron, so I will continue to leave tributes in each guest book until the day there is no longer the need to leave these tributes to a FALLEN HERO.

REST IN PEACE, HERO, YOU WILL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN!!

May 19, 2006

To the Bertolino Family,

There is no way to express how I feel for your loss. I proudly served with Bertolino in his platoon as the Mortar Section Leader and later as the Platoon Sergeant, SSgt Will, I'm sure you heard me yelling in the background if you ever talked to him on the phone during a field day. He was a great Marine and an outstanding kid. The memories I have of him are memories I will always crack a smile at. From Seabag Sumo wrestling on the Big Island to talks of how he wanted to get the "Million Dollar" wound so he could sue the government when he never saw the million dollars.

Bertlino spread a smile or a laugh every where he went. He was the best of friends to many of the Marines in his platoon. He will be sorely missed. When we arrived back in KBay on May 15th, someone asked me how I felt to be home. I replied that a part of me will always be in Afghanistan because we weren't all walking off this plane.

It was passed to me that when you are in Hawaii for his memorial that you wanted to hear stories of your son, please contact me so we can arrange some time for you to spend with the platoon and the Marines and Sailors that he served with.

With the utmost Sympathy,

Cory Will

Words can not describe your grief, but I understand your pain having lost a very best friend in the first Gulf War. Also, as a soldier currently deployed to IRAQ, I understand the dedication, loyalty, and courage, Marines like Matthew possess. His life will never be forgotten and nor will his sacrifices while at War for his country, his fellow Marines, the IRAQI people, and those hope seek Freedom and Security. We are all forever in his debt for the courageous actions and sacrifices he gave. I’m sure he served without expectations for reward, but rather for what was right. We love him for everything he stands for and only hope to be like him some day: courageous, proud, strong, and loving.

God Bless You Matthew, and your Family and Friends who weep your loss.

My prayers are with you as you go through this most difficult time. My two children go to Hampstead NH schools (my son's name is also "Matthew") and they have brought home stories of your Matthew and how he touched the town, and ultimately our country. Your son was fighting for the freedom that my kids now enjoy, and I teach them every day not to take it for granted. And to thank those like your son for all that they do for our country. In your time of mourning, I do hope that you know that your community is so thankful for the services rendered by Matthew. And I will not let my children forget the sacrifices that Matthew and others have made -- I promise you that. May God's peace find it's way into your heart and bring you some comfort in time.

Psalm 23

1

The LORD is my shepherd, I shall not be in want.

2

He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters,

3

He restores my soul. He guides me in paths of righteousness for his name's sake.

4

Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.

5

You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies. You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows.

6

Surely goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the LORD forever.

This is a verse that I have found to be comforting to me during my husbands death. Remember that when it seems that no one else is round, God is still there with you! And he will be your rock!

You were one of the only people that I knew could brighten my day when it was dark. You were always smiling and always telling jokes. I have so many memories of you. KIA outside of Fallujah 11/30/05

February 12, 2006

To the Family of Pfc. Matthew L. Bertolino:

I know first hand there are no words right now that will bring you the comfort and peace you need. Just know that you are not alone. My heart, thoughts, and prayers are with you all as you mourn this loss. We don't know each other, will probably never meet, but will forever be united in the loss of our Heroes. We have, unfortunately joined a group, an ever-growing group of families in this situation. May God grant you peace and strength to get through this and be able once again to smile at a memory rather than have only the tears that flow so easily now. If you ever want to talk, I'm only an e:mail away. God Bless this courageous soldier and his family.
