The Fort Snelling Memorial Chapel Foundation will be honoring your loved one at the non-denominational Christian Memorial Day Remembrance worship service at 11:00 a.m. on Sunday, 26 May 2013. We will remember the casualties of the Global War on Terrorism from Minnesota … and the bordering states of Iowa, North Dakota, South Dakota and Wisconsin. Outside of the historic Fort Snelling Veterans Memorial Chapel will be a “Memorial Garden” filled with some 300 white crosses bearing the names of the war dead … including your loved one.

The Memorial Garden will be encircled with larger white crosses representing all of the wars of our nation's history and give honor to all who have served in the United States Armed Forces and made the ultimate sacrifice for the freedoms we enjoy today. Wreaths will be placed at the foot of each 8-foot cross bearing the number of U.S. Service Members killed in each of America's conflicts.

I would like to extend to your family an invitation to honor us with your presence at worship as we pay tribute to the sacrifice made by your service member and family. Our pastor, Kenneth L. Beale, Jr., will preach a message entitled, “Freedom:Free, but Costly.” At the conclusion of the worship hour, all of the congregation will be invited to silently pay their respects at the garden and there place poppies at each of the crosses. A Memorial Rifle Squad of the Fort Snelling National Cemetery will fire vollies as the US flag is lowered to half-staff and Taps is played. Following your visit to the Memorial Garden, your family is invited to attend an informal reception (weather permitting) outside of the Chapel. The Memorial Garden will remain until 5:00 p.m. on Monday, 27 May (Memorial Day).

I wanted to let you know how sorry I am for your loss. I am a 21 year old female in the Army and I have been since 2005 as well. This past Veterans Day I attended a school in Texas who had a tribute to our fallen soldiers. Everyone in the room had a glow stick with a fallen soldiers name, age, city, and state. While the vice principal (A former Marine) was singing Angels among us better than any one who has ever sang it before we all in sequence cracked our glow sticks and twirled them around like a eveclear concert. I wore mine around my neck all day in uniform. Your son happened to be on my glow stick. I am grateful for his service and sacrifice. May he rest in peace. By the time I got you quilt all done I couldn't stop crying that is how much the quilt effected me. I just hope as soon as you get it that it will bring you comfort to know that we do care even as far as iowa people still remember people still care and want to help comfort you from all the pain you carry with you. If this person can stand in battle to ensure my freedom, then I will stand in grief with his/her family to honor him/her. For every fallen HERO there is a bright star that shines in the evening sky to remind us of the cherished gift we were given – even if for too short a time.
My heart breaks again as I sign yet another guest book of another courageous young soldier who gave their life so selflessly. I wish I never found myself in a position to have to sign another guest book for the rest of my life, but I promised LE RON A. WILSON (a dear friend KIA 7/6/07, 18yrs old) that neither he nor any like him would be forgotten and so I will continue until the day there is no longer the need.

My husband is GySgt Bassfield, Co gunny for 1/3 Bravo and he says not a day goes by that he doesn't think of Nicholas! My son, also with the 1/3, called me just days after your sons death. He began to tell how he had just lost one of his best friends. Apparently they had also gone to boot camp together, SOI, and ended up together at the 1/3.



Take comfort in knowing that your son has made a difference with his life. That his loss was not in vain and is felt beyond the boundaries of your own family.



My family has been praying for yours since the day I received the call from my son asking us to pray for you. His sadness was apparent even half a world away.

Dear Anderson Family,

Even though we have never met, I feel as if we are part of a "family". My daughter's fiancee was killed in Iraq on Oct. 3,2005 by an IED. It is my prayer that you will feel God holding you close to His heart as He has held my family through these past months. May you feel His peace and comfort as you pass through these difficult days.

To the Family of Lance Cpl. Nicholas R. Anderson:



I am saddened to sign yet another guest book. We grieve with you in the loss of your precious son Nicholas. I know from first hand experience exactly how you are feeling and what you must be going through. We too lost a son in Iraq on December 1, 2005.



As a mother/parent I know there is nothing I can say that will ease your pain and sorrow over the terrible loss of your brave and courageous son. I know your hearts are broken and there is now a void and deep sadness in your heart that will never be filled. While the pain will probably never leave, I pray the Lord gives you comfort, peace and strength of mind to help you cope with this loss over time.



This is an extremely difficult time, but hold on to those good memories of your son….the ones that make you laugh and remember with joy the moments that you shared. The laughter between all those tears is one of the ways that will help you work through your grief. Nicholas is a hero (a man admired for his achievements and noble qualities) and even though we were not fortunate enough to know him we pray for you and all your family and for all those serving our country so valiantly. Our children have made the ultimate sacrifice and they will always be honored and never forgotten. Unfortunately these tragic events have bound all of us together and changed our lives forever. God bless you and all those who mourn the loss of Nicholas and thank you for his service to our country!

To Nicholas's family and friends-

My family and I are praying for you and your family during this difficult time. We send our deepest empathy as we lost our Marine on 11/30/05 in Fallujah. We are comforted to know that our Marines are serving their country with such honor and bravery. We are so proud of our Marines and all of our other service men and women for all that they have done and continue to do to keep us safe and to give us the freedom we have that so many take for granted.

My heart breaks again as I sign yet another guest book of another courgeous young man who gave his life so selflessly. We lost our son 12/1/05.

I know first hand there are no words right now that will bring you the comfort and peace you need. Just know that you are not alone. My heart, thoughts, and prayers are with you all as you mourn this loss. We don't know each other, will probably never meet, but will forever be united in the loss of our Heroes. We have, unfortunately joined a group, an ever-growing group of families in this situation. May God grant you peace and strength to get through this and be able once again to smile at a memory rather than have only the tears that flow so easily now. To be so proud of your loved one and so saddened at the same time is a mix of emotions very difficult to deal with. They will never be forgotten, never able to be replaced, but sometime, someday your memories will sustain you. This courageous soldier will forever now be your Angel watching over you all for the rest of your lives. It's what brings me peace and comfort and I hope it will you as well.
