I too, took care of Johnathan in Brooke Army Medical Center´s ICU in San Antonio Tx. Everyone on his care team felt his desire to fight for his life. Even with his catastrophic injuries he was able to cast a mischievous grin and encourage us to move forward with the care that inflicted great pain on him. We all wished he had fulfilled our running joke with him. We often told him he would be in the U.S. Senate hawking Viagra one day. Johnathan, like many other did not survive his injuries, so we moved on to the next admission. However, on Memorial Day, Johnathan Benson is the name and face that always comes to mind when counting the cost and sacrifice of war. Rest in peace young warrior. Robert Duncan

To the family of Johnathan. It is with a heavy heart that I am writing this. Too much time has passed without me reaching out to you. It was my great honor to have cared for Jonathan in the ICU in Balad, Iraq. I was the ICU nurse who received him from the battlefield. Two things that I still carry with me are, one, the strength of WILL that Johnathan had while we were both in a fight for him to live and two, the intense love his Sergeant had for him as I cared for him and as I shipped him off to Germany. Johnathan was the pinnacle of my deployment and probably my nursing career. Johnathans will to survive gave me strength to persevere through the hard times and never give up on anyone.....including myself. I can say with all honesty that Johnathan is still with me in my career and my life. His heart and strength made me a better person and a far better nurse.

I was the Chaplain on duty the night Johnathan came into the Balad hospital. I have not forgotten him,and I'm sure that many who cared for him have not forgotten him. When we put him on the plane to Germany, another patient looked on, he knew he was injured very badly. The other patient looked at me with compassionate and questioning eyes, and I told him, "his name is Johnathan, pray for him OK." The other soldier shook his head and said, "yes ma'am, I will". I learned of Johnathan's death just a couple of days before I left Balad to come home. I still think about this hero.

I was a lab tech at Balad AB, Iraq on shift the night that Johnathan came in after his injuries. We issued over 200 units to him that night. I went to visit him after my shift was over and told him to hang in there. I was so upset when I came back from my deployment and found out that he had passed. I will never forget him.

To the family of Cpl. Johnathan L. Benson:
The Fort Snelling Memorial Chapel Foundation will be honoring your loved one at the non-denominational Memorial Day Sunday worship service at 11:00 a.m. on 25 May, 2008. We will remember the casualties of the Global War on Terrorism from Minnesota … and the neighboring states of Iowa, North Dakota, South Dakota and Wisconsin. Outside of the historic Fort Snelling Veterans Memorial Chapel will be a “Memorial Garden” filled with white crosses bearing the names of the war dead … including your loved one.

I would like to extend to your family an invitation to honor us with your presence at worship as we pay tribute to the sacrifice made by your service member and family. Our pastor, U.S. Army Chaplain, LTC Kenneth L. Beale, Jr. will preach a message entitled “The Price of Freedom” At the conclusion of the worship hour, all of the congregation will be invited to silently pay their respects at the garden and place poppies at each of the crosses. An honor guard squad will be on hand to fire vollies as the US flag is lowered to half-staff and Taps is played.

As this Christian worship service has traditionally been well attended, we would be happy to reserve seating for you and yours. To do so, kindly call (612/970-7866) and leave a voice message indicating your veterans’ name and the number of persons attending. Also, beginning at dusk (8:30 p.m.) on Sat. 24 May through dawn (6:30 a.m.) on Sun. 25 May, a “PrayerVigil for Peace” will be held. You are invited to stop by and light a candle and place it at the foot of your loved one’s cross in the Memorial Garden, then enter the Chapel for prayer.

If you are not able to attend, we pray that you would find comfort in knowing that our prayers are with you and all of the fallen heroes.

There is nothing that I can say or do to take away the pain or bring you peace in your time of sorrow, but I will offer you and your family my heart felt condolences. I also offer you my prayers that in time the pain will easy and the memories of your HERO will carry you through each day and night. I want to thank your HERO, for his/her selfless act of becoming a member of the armed forces, his/her willingness to defend the United States of America, all that we hold sacred and for the sacrifice that will forever be etched in the memories of all those who knew him/her. Though tears can never bring him/her back, we hope that our tears express our gratitude for the sacrifice that he/she made and our sorrow at his/her passing. I believe for every fallen HERO there is a star shining brightly up above to remind us of the precious gift we were given.

Your mission on earth is complete and you are now a member of GOD’s Heavenly armed forces. Stand down brave warrior and take your rightful place in Heaven with all the HEROES who have passed before.

I made a special promise to LE RON A. WILSON, a dear family friend who joined the Army with three other friends, one of whom is my son (Le Ron was killed in action on 07/06/07 at the age of 18) on the day he was laid to rest as I touched his coffin, that I would never forget him nor would I forget those that gave their lives for our country before him, with him and after him and so when I came across www.legacy.com, I thought what a great way to keep my promise to Le Ron, so I will continue to leave tributes in each guest book until the day there is no longer the need to leave these tributes to a FALLEN HERO.

I only wish I spent more time getting to know how well Johnathan lived. As my sister (Marg) says... we should cherrish our friends and relatives like there's no tommorrow... rather than have excuses why we don't.

Having been a Marine in Vietnam, I have a very good idea just how "courageous" Johnathan was... and I salute him.... along with Marg and Steve for having a lot to do with the values that Jonathan had.

One great thing I can see in these responses... is... that patriotisim, humility, love and devotion has not gone away... but seems to grow each Day and I am proud of that, however... I am just as proud of how Johnathan lived as to how he died.

Sad but Proud....

To all the friends out there who care about our son. We love you and thank you from the bottom of our hearts. The days are very hard and long. It's very hard to go on. But God is good. He has blessed us with good memories, the greatest family and good friends. God promises to stay close to the broken hearted, and He does. I've learned not to take life for granted. Enjoy each day as it is you last with everyone. We never know when we will have to say good-buy. The Lord gives and he takes away. Going through pictures and being alone after it is all over are the hardest things. I miss him and want to take back the years. But I can't. Take time today to tell your love ones that you love them.

To the Family of Cpl. Jonathan L. Benson:

My heart breaks again as I sign yet another guest book of another courgeous young soldier who gave their life so selflessly. I wish I never found myself in a position to have to sign another guestbook for the rest of my life. We lost a son 12/1/05 and it seems like yesterday.

I know first hand there are no words right now that will bring you the comfort and peace you need. Just know that you are not alone. My heart, thoughts, and prayers are with you all as you mourn this loss. We don't know each other, will probably never meet, but will forever be united in the loss of our Heroes. We have, unfortunately joined a group none of us wanted to join, an ever-growing group of families in this situation. May God grant you peace and strength to get through this and be able once again to smile at a memory rather than have only the tears that flow so easily now. To be so proud of your loved one and so saddened at the same time is a mix of emotions very difficult to deal with. I am sorry that I never knew your soldier personally, but none of these courageous men and women will be forgotten. They will never be able to be replaced, but sometime, someday your loving memories will help to sustain you. This courageous soldier will forever now be your Angel watching over you all for the rest of your lives. It's what brings me some measure of peace and comfort and I hope it will you as well. To his family and friends in pain, I offer this comfort: When you find yourself in that dark sorrowful place, think not only of how you will miss him, but instead recall the years, days, hours and minutes gifted to you by his presence. The one thing that cannot be taken from you is those wonderful memories that now will mean more than ever. If you ever want to talk, I'm only an e:mail away and would love for you to tell me more about your Hero. God Bless this courageous soldier and family.
