Amos C. R. Bock Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Oct. 27, 2006.
Natalie Hunter grew up next door to Amos C. R. Bock and said her time with the red-haired, puckish troublemaker was never dull. "My parents called him 'that damned Bock kid,'" she said to laughter during his funeral. "And he didn't mind that because it meant he could curse when he repeated it." "He was a force to be reckoned with," she said. Bock, 24, of New Madrid, Mo., died Oct. 23 in Baghdad when an explosive detonated near his vehicle. He was assigned to Fort Campbell. "He will be remembered fondly, talked about often and never forgotten," Hunter said. At the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, he majored in geospatial engineering, a field of geographic mapping, and received his degree in 2004. "He was loyal, someone you could count on never to let you down even if he was slightly sarcastic while he was doing it. Simply put, he was a great friend," said 1st Lt. Travis Masters. On his MySpace.com page, Bock, an avid hunter and backpacker, listed Ernest Hemingway's "A Farewell to Arms" as one of his favorite books. His stated motto: "No good deed goes unpunished." He is survived by his parents, Jill and Riley.

Holding you all in my thoughts and prayers.

The Wind on The Downs

“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”

(Written by Marian Allen during World War l )

Two lines that I wish you to keep near your heart…….

“You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe”

I did not know Amos, but I am remembering
his service and sacrifice. He is my hero. !

The Other Side

i'm over on the other side
where life and death softly divide.
left my skin and bones behind
now i'm over on the other side.

can you feel me there with you?
my breath is gone but i'm not through.
loved you then and i still do
from over on the other side.

i can fly. really fly.
below the earth ... all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

it's good here on the other side.
the sweetest songs...the bluest skies.
thank you for the tears you cried
but it's good here on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth...all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side

the world is smaller than a needle's eye.
where life and death softly divide.
when you leave your skin and bones behind
i'll be waiting on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth ... all through the sky.
go tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

To Amos' Parents,
No words can or will ever bring you the peace of mind or the joy that I know Amos brought to your lives. Having known him since his Yuck year when he came into H-2, I can agree with the others who write at what a loss the world took when Amos gave his all for our country. While nothing can subdue the sadness, I hope you find comfort in knowing Amos was doing exactly what he wanted to do and touched so many lives in the time he had. He was such a great person, always giving a reason to laugh when no other reason seemed to exist and that is a special gift many found so comforting. He and I spoke often of home, having both been from the area but at no time did he ever suggest he wished he'd done something different with his life.

And to Amos, the only thing that ever needs be said of such a great soldier and cadet:
Well done! Be thou at peace.

To Amos' family,

I have thought about your son so very often this past year and especially this weekend. I simply cannot believe a yr has already passed. Amos has been in my prayers since we first met him bc I knew those kids were going to be facing challenges at West Point and in active duty.

When Simon first brought him to Maysville, he came to the house so Amos could meet our son, Noah (Simon's cousin and best friend). We fell in love with him immediately. He was so funny and always welcome in our home. Simon's family loved him too. Noah, Simon and Amos really enjoyed going to Montgomery Inn in Cincinnati for ribs.
I admired him, I will miss him always, and I am honored and humbled that I was able to call him my friend. You will always be in my prayers. I just wanted you to know we thought the world of him and always will.

August 21, 2007

There is nothing that I can say or do to take away the pain or bring you peace in your time of sorrow, but I will offer you and your family my heart felt condolences. I also offer you my prayers that in time the pain will easy and the memories of your HERO will carry you through each day and night. I want to thank your HERO, for his/her selfless act of becoming a member of the armed forces, his/her willingness to defend the United States of America, all that we hold sacred and for the sacrifice that will forever be etched in the memories of all those who knew him/her. Though tears can never bring him/her back, we hope that our tears express our gratitude for the sacrifice that he/she made and our sorrow at his/her passing. I believe for every fallen HERO there is a star shining brightly up above to remind us of the precious gift we were given.

Your mission on earth is complete and you are now a member of GOD’s Heavenly armed forces. Stand down brave warrior and take your rightful place in Heaven with all the HEROES who have passed before.

I made a special promise to LE RON A. WILSON, a dear family friend who joined the Army with three other friends, one of whom is my son (Le Ron was killed in action on 07/06/07 at the age of 18) on the day he was laid to rest as I touched his coffin, that I would never forget him nor would I forget those that gave their lives for our country before him, with him and after him and so when I came across www.legacy.com, I thought what a great way to keep my promise to Le Ron, so I will continue to leave tributes in each guest book until the day there is no longer the need to leave these tributes to a FALLEN HERO.

REST IN PEACE, HERO, YOU WILL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN!!

“Soldier”
Written to Honor the Service of Our Fallen Soldiers

Soldiers write history, we pay the price
Many miles distant, you live the life
Entered the Battle of our own free will
Out of Duty for Country, and we’d do it still

We hope and pray that all will find peace
In God, in the flag, in memories of valor
Gone now, our pride and courage you see
“An Army of One” our motto forever

Willing to risk all for love of our Brothers
We’re still Your Soldiers…and we showed the way
Our Lives too short, now pray for the others
Lived free died Heroes in lands far away

Deep within souls all cherished our Service
We’ll always have what some never know
Courage and Honor, our names forever
Lived life with purpose…just our time to go

We march in the Heavens with Honor and Glory
Missions accomplished we fought the Good Fight
Many years from now…we’ll tell the full story
Until that Day we will live in the Light

Our lives we laid down in a land far away
Still watching o’er you this night and by day
No need to talk…just know we are with you
There in your hearts and we hear what you pray

Yes we are your soldiers
Our lives we laid down
Still We guard o’er you
Still Duty bound

Entered the Battle of our own free will
Out of Duty for Country, and we’d do it still
We’ll always have what some never know
Lived life with purpose…it was our time to go

I suppose it was inevitable I would be in your dad’s old office this afternoon, this eve of my 48th birthday and thinking of you as I have during much of this bitter sweet holiday. I know you are here with us….watching over us but that doesn’t lessen the pain of wanting to touch your face….of wanting to see your smile….that smile you would give us as your eyes tilted up from something funny and sarcastic you would say and we would all laugh. I don’t know when it is suppose to get easier for us….maybe more time….maybe never. We miss you so much and as we’ve gone through this Christmas…enjoying Mariah, Natalie and Nick…enjoying your parents…..we’ve also enjoyed wonderful stories of you, we are so thankful for these stories and of the time we had with you Camden. So please forgive us if we need to come back from time to time to leave a message and please forgive us if we can’t dry the tears yet, we just don’t know when that will be my little neighbor boy.

Camden
The very first memory i have of you was of you being my hero. I was having trouble staying out of some mud and you made sure i was ok that night. You didn't even know my name but that didn't matter to you. That was only the first of many memories we had. Your sense of humor, your farm parties, and your MANY 3:00 a.m. phone calls will never be forgotten. It is hard to remember through all the sadness and grieve, what a blessing it was just to know you. You could always make someone feel like they were the only person in the room no matter what. My very first memory was you being a hero to me. My last was you being a hero for everyone. you will never be forgotten, but you will always be missed.

Camden, On this day like so many days I'm sitting in my office...the same office your dad once used and your grandfather before him....and I feel the loss the deep painful loss so many of us feel with your going on before us. I know there are many on this day that have written to you on your page or maybe they have thought the words they know you will receive regarding their thanks and sincere feelings of the way you touched them with your unselfishness in watching over all of us. I know you started being a guardian long before you left West Point and I thank you for the 4th of July phone call from Bagdad and I thank you for all those Halloween calls to see how your old neighbor was doing. You knew how important that holiday was in our neighborhood and that date of all dates would be hard for me when all of you grew up and left home. Thank you for giving me those times of you and thank you for your thoughtfulness in knowing I needed that phone call to brighten my night. I thank you also for "trick or treating" us every year as well....the last Halloween of your senior year you came over dressed as a pencil salesman and we laughed at the fun of it all….only you could pull that one off with such flair....I thank you again....I needed that so and you got that I needed that so much back then when I didn't want to give up the childhoods of you, Natalie, Nick and Mariah. It was the little things that endeared you to us so much, those special funny thoughtful things you did that were so typically Camden....that were so typically you...special and funny with a twist of sarcasm, I’m truly going to miss that sarcasm.

There aren't enough words to tell you what you have meant to us. We all are better people for having known you. You touched so many of us…....you mattered....you really truly mattered and you made a difference. I can’t help but think that early on your parents knew there was something very special about you. Back then, I thought it was our whole neighborhood that claimed you, but recently it’s become apparent to all of us that you belonged to the whole town and your parents were generous in sharing you and for that we will be forever grateful.

So on this Veteran’s day…this day of all days, as tributes are being made on the television for the young men and women in the armed forces I say thank you Camden, my little neighbor boy, my Ross Perot Halloween trick or treater, my buddy, my young man, my friend, my hero. I miss you.

To a great friend, you were always there for anyone if they needed you. I heard all types of stories today at the church about you and even though i didn't know you when you were growing up, it sounded just like you. I wish i could have seen you one last time. That is the worst part about moving away. You don't see much of your friends and when you finally have the chance, it is too late. I regret not staying in touch with you. I know this wouldn't be as hard as it is for me right now. I have lost a great friend. No one can ever replace you. You will forever be missed. One day I will see you again. Until that day comes, I'll rely on my dreams. God Bless You and Thank You for being who you are!!!!

Camden, you were a bright and shining star long before you sacrificed your life in the service of your country and became a hero in the hearts and minds of those that knew you. As your teacher, your care and concern for those around you, especially those less fortunate than yourself was evident making it no surprise that life's journey would lead you across the world to a hostile land where you would do your part to help make a difference in the lives of the innocent and helpless in Iraq. I feel so blessed to have encountered you on my life's journey, and I will forever treasure the memories of you as my student, but my friend. You will be forever missed, but never forgotten. As Shakespeare wrote, "He is not of an age, but for all time."

To Riley, Jill, and Mariah: May you find peace and comfort every day in the beautiful memories Camden has left each of you. Words cannot express the loss you feel right now, but with God's loving arms wrapped tightly around you, you will draw strength for the days ahead. My prayers and thoughts are with you. May God bless you!

To my friends and family here at home, it is hard loosing a friend especially when it is unexpected. Even knowing Camden was in a scary place, in the back of your mind you still have the onset of he will be home sooo soon and it will be great knowing he will then be truely safe. You never really can prepare yourself for loss of a friend especially if it is a family member. I so thankful to have grown up with Camden. He is a true hero and model of the All-American Man. Thank you Camden for being for first the friend you and the brave soldier you turned out to be. We all love you and miss you dearly!!! My prayers are with his family in their time of need. God Bless

To the Family of 1st Lt. Amos C.R. Bock:
If your child can stand in battle to ensure my freedom, then I will stand in grief with his family to honor him. For every fallen HERO there is a bright star that shines in the evening sky to remind us of the cherished gift we were given – even if for too short a time.
My heart breaks again as I sign yet another guest book of another courageous young soldier who gave their life so selflessly. I wish I never found myself in a position to have to sign another guestbook for the rest of my life, but I promised Brent that neither he nor any like him would be forgotten and so I will continue until the day there is no longer the need.
We lost our son SFC Brent A. Adams on 12/1/05 as well and it seems like yesterday. I wish so badly there were things I could say to you right now to make the pain you are feeling go away, but I know first hand there simply are no words that will bring you the comfort and peace your heart aches for right now. Just know that you are not alone. My heart, thoughts, and prayers are with you all as you go through this tragedy moment by moment and as you mourn this loss.
We don't know each other, will probably never meet, but will forever be united in the loss of our Heroes. We have, unfortunately joined a group none of us wanted to join, an ever-growing group of families in this situation. May God grant you peace and strength to get through this and be able once again to smile at a memory rather than have only the tears that flow so easily now. To be so proud of your loved one and so saddened at the same time is a mix of emotions very difficult to deal with as our hearts both burst with pride and pain together.
I am sorry that I never knew your soldier personally. While they can never be replaced, neither will they ever be forgotten . You must trust that sometime, someday the loving memories you have will help to sustain you and help you go on. This courageous soldier will forever be your Angel watching over you all for the rest of your lives. It's what brings me some measure of peace and comfort and I hope it will you as well.
To his family and friends in pain, I offer this comfort: When you find yourself in that dark sorrowful place, think not only of how you will miss him, but instead recall the years, days, hours and minutes gifted to you by his presence. The one thing that cannot be taken from you is your wonderful memories that now will mean more than ever.
If you ever want to talk, I'm only an e:mail away and would love for you to tell me more about your Hero.
God Bless this soldier and family who gave all and God Bless legacy.com for setting up this site where families can so quickly share their condolences and prayers with others like themselves.
