Daniel B. Chaires Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Oct. 27, 2006.
Daniel B. Chaires enlisted in the Marines, in no small part because his father was a Marine. He had to take the military physical four times because his excitement the first three times led to a rapid heartbeat. "Daniel wanted to follow in my footsteps," said his father, Harry Chaires. "You never saw anybody work harder to be in the Marine Corps." Chaires, 20, of Tallahassee, Fla., died Oct. 25 when a bullet from an insurgent struck him in the abdomen in Anbar province. He was assigned to Kaneohe Bay. He was a strapping outdoorsman, who liked to ride horses, fish, hunt and work on the family's property. He was known for a genuine politeness, an eagerness to help friends and neighbors. "He was a lamb, just a lamb. He was beautiful inside and out," said neighbor Isabelle Blakey. Chaires was homeschooled and earned a GED, then attended Tallahassee Community College to earn the 15 college credits needed to enlist. He is survived by his parents, Harry and Nan. On his last call home, "Daniel said, 'I just want to tell you that I love you and Mom very much, and I don't want you to ever forget it,'" Harry Chaires said.

I am a Vietnam marine . I was fortunate enough to talk to Harry Chaires, Daniel's father, who relayed to me what he knew of Daniel and his last few minutes on this earth . I wept . In Front of Harry and unapologetically, for the life of his son, Daniel Chaires .
Daniel, and I am sure others, who our military placed in harm's way, near Ramadi Iraq, in Anbar Province, gave his last ounce of life in much the same way as those marines at khe Sanh, Con Thien and our soldiers at Dak To and Cu Chi must have done . I will always think of you , Daniel, and your brothers Dave and Derrick who perished at non-descript grid co-ordinates in places foreign to most of America . You , young American warriors will always be in my heart and elevated to a status most Americans will never know . We, the men and women war veterans ,that have been fortunate enough to return to the comforts of America will never forget you. You are us, and we love you and miss you , always .

Dear Nan and Harry,
Of course I got the news this week of another in our family - Josh Mills - being killed in action, and my heart was broken. In talking to family about him, I found out how to write a condolence to the family via the internet. After I wrote one to Celeste's family, I thought I might be able to find out something about Daniel and I did! I have cried a barrel after reading all the good condolences you received and thought I wanted to add one, even though it is almost two years later.

My early memories go back to Daniel playing in the mud puddles between your house and Mama's and Mama calling him her "May baby" because is liked to play in the mud! My memories of Daniel and Hannah visiting me at my house and "banging" on my piano and climbing the popcorn tree in the back yard are so precious! Even then, the children were so courteous and sweet that I am not one bit surprised at all the wonderful comments made about Daniel! Later, I remember how sweet Daniel was in caring for Daddy.

Almost two years later, I know your hearts continue to ache and will until we see him again in Heaven; then all will be well. Praise the Lord for His goodness!

Bro. Taylor and I pray every day for "Harry and Nana and their family." I am glad that our Heavenly Father gives us the strength and peace we need to go through each day - one day at a time. Even though we don't see each other often, you are in my heart and prayers and I love you very much. Our love and prayers to Hannah, Scott and Todd and families, also.

Love,
Your Sister Bobbie "Aunt Bobbie"
(Bro. Taylor, too!)

The Wind on The Downs

“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”

(Written by Marian Allen during World War l )

Two lines that I wish you to keep near your heart…….

“You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe”

I did not know Daniel, but I am remembering
his service and sacrifice. He is my hero. !
Thank you Harry for your Marine service. !

The Other Side

i'm over on the other side
where life and death softly divide.
left my skin and bones behind
now i'm over on the other side.

can you feel me there with you?
my breath is gone but i'm not through.
loved you then and i still do
from over on the other side.

i can fly. really fly.
below the earth ... all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

it's good here on the other side.
the sweetest songs...the bluest skies.
thank you for the tears you cried
but it's good here on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth...all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side

the world is smaller than a needle's eye.
where life and death softly divide.
when you leave your skin and bones behind
i'll be waiting on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth ... all through the sky.
go tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

There is nothing that I can say or do to take away the pain or bring you peace in your time of sorrow, but I will offer you and your family my heart felt condolences. I also offer you my prayers that in time the pain will easy and the memories of your HERO will carry you through each day and night. I want to thank your HERO, for his/her selfless act of becoming a member of the armed forces, his/her willingness to defend the United States of America, all that we hold sacred and for the sacrifice that will forever be etched in the memories of all those who knew him/her. Though tears can never bring him/her back, we hope that our tears express our gratitude for the sacrifice that he/she made and our sorrow at his/her passing. I believe for every fallen HERO there is a star shining brightly up above to remind us of the precious gift we were given.

Your mission on earth is complete and you are now a member of GOD’s Heavenly armed forces. Stand down brave warrior and take your rightful place in Heaven with all the HEROES who have passed before.

I made a special promise to LE RON A. WILSON, a dear family friend who joined the Army with three other friends, one of whom is my son (Le Ron was killed in action on 07/06/07 at the age of 18) on the day he was laid to rest as I touched his coffin, that I would never forget him nor would I forget those that gave their lives for our country before him, with him and after him and so when I came across www.legacy.com, I thought what a great way to keep my promise to Le Ron, so I will continue to leave tributes in each guest book until the day there is no longer the need to leave these tributes to a FALLEN HERO.

REST IN PEACE, HERO, YOU WILL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN!!

“Paid in Full”
In Honor of The War Against Terrorism’s Fallen and Injured Marines

Marines through and through, they paid the price
Six thousand miles away, we live the life
For which they paid with their blood, spirits and bodies
We will never forget what they paid in full

We hope and we pray that somehow their loved ones find comfort
In God, in the flag, in the memory of their loved ones’ bravery
They’re gone now but we see them still…proud, strong, willing
Covering each other’s backs… courageous, moving forward

What kind of love did they have for us to be willing
To give it all for the Black, White, Jew, Christian, Muslim?
We don’t comprehend but we honor you now and forever
You are Our Marines…some living…some not
Forever in our minds we will cherish your lives

Lives too short yet immortal they’ll be
Highest brotherhood of the few, the proud
They stand at attention, and we gaze with awe
Some know their names not, but our admiration for them
Flows limitless within us, between us

They sacrificed their limbs or their lives
Freedom still rings, a soft sound across the miles
It tolls slowly; all of creation takes note
Of the lives that were lost for people unknown

Out of sight but not lost; forever among us
The starched blues marching straight
Toward the place where we will meet them
Many years from now…how we loved them…
Well done beloved Brothers and Sisters…You’ve paid it in full
Always Faithful Marines, You Have Paid it in Full

Mr. Harry, Todd, Scott & Family:

My heart goes out to you guys during this difficult time. I received a call from a friend the night the news of Daniel's death was aired and I have grieved for you and with you ever since. I followed the events through the Democrat online and unfortunately was unable to make the trip home to Chaires for Daniel's services.

Although I didn't know Daniel that well since he was so much younger than us, I do know the three of you very well and know that he too must have been an extraordinary person!

Growing up in Chaires was truly a blessing and I know it now more than ever. I miss the good ole days, but God has blessed me with a new small and tight-nit community to raise my girls in. My prayer is that they too will one day treasure it. I will never forget those years I spent in Chaires and the rich legacy it has. I will always think of it as home!

Please know that you are all in my prayers now and forever. May God continue to bless you and give you the peace to carry on.

To Daniel: Thank you for the ultimate sacrifice that I liken to the sacrifice that Christ made on the cross. I am proud of you and all of our soldiers who continue to fight for our freedom. Rest in peace!

Love and Prayers,

The loss of a child is a parent's worst nightmare.
The pride of a parent upon their child's accomplishment is the greatest beyonds God's glory. Daniel has accomplished God's Glory. He is a fine young man and now he is one of God's Glorious Angels.
I remember Daniel as a polite young man asking to ride in my old beatup Jeep and again as a proud young Marine eager to fill the footsteps of his parents. My heart aches for you , Harry, Nan and all of your family, but it swells with pride for a fine young man known only to a few and loved by so many.

Dear Chaires Family,

My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. I live in the Chaires area. My 20 year old son is in the Airforce. On the day Daniel came home, my son received orders to go to Iraq on January 1, 2007. I watched on the news as Daniel was brought home and I prayed for you and could not imagine the pain you and your family are going through. I received my son's news later that night and had a few rough days processing the news. I just wanted you to know that your family has given me strength... Your son sounds like a wonderful young man. Thank You for him.

God Bless!

Dearest Chaires
family, Many of us go through life meeting a few people who greatly touch our lives in a profound way. Our lives were blessed by Daniel in so many ways. Unlike a lot of you who never had the opportunity to know Daniel, I have known and kept up with him all of his life, due to working with his dad, Harry, at the Leon County Sheriff’s Office for 24 years.
As you have seen from those who knew Daniel, everyone has said how polite and generous Daniel was. I was fortunate enough to witness this all the way through his childhood and into his young adult life. Daniel was so up-beat and happy that he was always a pleasure to be around. This is one young man who grew on you.
Daniel took care of his grandfather after his grandmother passed away. This meant a lot to me because my grandfather was also my best friend growing up. I did everything with him that I could, as Daniel did with his grandfather.
Harry was so proud of Daniel and kept us entertained with stories throughout his life.
I look at my own two children as they grow up, hoping that everyone that comes in contact with them will feel the same as those who had met Daniel. This is one kid who you would love from the first time you met him.
Daniel decided to join the United States Marines. He worked harder than anyone I know to achieve a goal they have set for themselves. He is a true American Hero and will not be forgotten.
It takes young men and women like Daniel that are willing to lay down their lives in order for us to live in the Great Country we live in and have the freedom we have become accustom to. Unfortunately, some of these brave men and women do lay down their lives while protecting us.
When I stopped by the other night and got to see Daniel, I didn’t see the sweet kid that I once knew. What I saw was a young man that had gained my respect and I was so proud of him and what he had become.
My friend Harry, Nanna, Todd, Scott, and Hannah my thoughts and prayers have been, and will continue to be, with you. You know that I’m only a phone call away if you need anything.
God Bless America and God Bless the men and women of our Armed Forces! May He watch over you and keep you safe.

Even though we have never met, I feel as if we are a part of a "family". My daughter's fiancee was killed in Iraq by an IED on Oct. 3, 2005. I am Daniel's sister-in-law. My husband, Todd, is one of Daniel's older brothers. First, I'd like to thank you for visiting this website and honoring Daniel's memory. Secondly, I'd like to tell you a little bit about this extraordinary, young man.

I can't even begin to express the honor it was to know and love Daniel, and to be a member of his family. The Chaires family is the most amazing group of individuals I have ever met and am fortunate enough to be a part of it. I want everyone who reads this to know what an AMAZING, gracious, kind and happy young man Daniel was. I have always said that Harry and Nanna, Daniel's parents, did an incredible job of raising Daniel and his younger sister, Hannah. And I stand by that today. The values and morals that they instilled in him provided the ground work that nurtured him to grow and mature, and become the one of a kind, true Southern Gentleman and Hero that he was.

While our family is truly heartbroken and devasted by the events that occured on October 25, 2006, we find comfort in knowing that Daniel lived out his dream of becoming a U.S. Marine and that he died a Hero and a true Warrior. We deeply mourn our loss, but know that we will see Daniel again someday.

Our focus now is to support and honor our troops that are still over there fighting the fight and defending our freedom. Please don't forget these men and women.

God Bless America!

Be Still

Be still like the grass on a melancholy summer day
Be still like desert shrub.

Be calm and you will hear your loved one speak, in the stillness, in the calm, their love resounds.

If you are still this promise I make, you will hear the voice of your loved one helping you along your way.

To my friend, Harry Chaires....

I just wanted you to know that Daniel was one, if not the most impressive young men I have ever met. Many years ago, while working LEO details at the State Fair with you, Daniel was by your side. My wife, son, daughter and I were soooo impressed and amazed at how courteous and polite this promising youngster was when you introduced him to us. I could see the pride and love for him in your eyes.

Daniel was once with me on a patrol ride-along where we discussed him becoming a US Marine, or possibly going to the academy to become a Deputy Sheriff. Either way, whatever his decision, Daniel was going to become so much like his one and only hero, his Daddy.

Please know that one day you and your dear family will see Daniel again. Words can never express the comfort needed in these times. I pray for you and your family. The Lord knows your loss and will provide His strength. As Marines, we believe we guard the gates of Heaven, but whether Daniel is assigned this duty or not, one thing for sure is that he is with his Savior.

Those of us who remain on earth must always remember and be so proud that this Marine died with extreme valor and honor. His sacrifice will never be forgotten. Critics can never denigrate Daniel’s devoted and honorable life. Daniel’s sacrifice is appreciated by all true Americans who love this Country. Daniel joins the ranks of Marines who gave all for true American values and freedom. This world is a very tumultuous place, and young Marine Warriors like Daniel keep the flood of evil away from our shores.

I am so sorry to have missed Daniel’s funeral as I just was informed, for I would have been there. Semper Fidelis

I did not know Pfc. Chaires. However, I was in the airport on October 31, 2006 preparing to board my plane when I stopped and joined the many others who were deeply moved as we witnessed Pfc. Chaires flag-drapped casket carefully unloaded from the plane. My heart ached for his many loved ones standing arm-in-arm on the Airport's tarmac.

My brother currently serves in the Army, and is currently home from Iraq. He is scheduled to return in January 2007. Although there are no words to help deal with the grief, please know there are many people (me included) who are praying for your family [the Chaires Family] and all of our soldiers.

Prayerfully and Sincerely,

Kimberly Horgan

To the family of PFC Chaires,
Unfortunately, I did not have the pleasure of meeting this wonderful young man; my boyfriend, however, served with Daniel in 2/3 Echo Co. Everyone who knew him has always spoken highly of him, and I regret that I did not have the opportunity to know him.
My condolences on the loss of your Marine. God bless him for his selflessness and bravery in defending our country. I will pray for you and for Daniel every day.

My brother among them. KIA-Vietnam 1967.

"I will lift up my eyes to the hills-
from whence comes my help?
My help comes from the Lord,
Who made heaven and earth."

To the Family of Pfc. Daniel B. Chaires:
If your child can stand in battle to ensure my freedom, then I will stand in grief with his family to honor him. For every fallen HERO there is a bright star that shines in the evening sky to remind us of the cherished gift we were given – even if for too short a time.
My heart breaks again as I sign yet another guest book of another courageous young soldier who gave their life so selflessly. I wish I never found myself in a position to have to sign another guestbook for the rest of my life, but I promised Brent that neither he nor any like him would be forgotten and so I will continue until the day there is no longer the need.
We lost our son SFC Brent A. Adams on 12/1/05 as well and it seems like yesterday. I wish so badly there were things I could say to you right now to make the pain you are feeling go away, but I know first hand there simply are no words that will bring you the comfort and peace your heart aches for right now. Just know that you are not alone. My heart, thoughts, and prayers are with you all as you go through this tragedy moment by moment and as you mourn this loss.
We don't know each other, will probably never meet, but will forever be united in the loss of our Heroes. We have, unfortunately joined a group none of us wanted to join, an ever-growing group of families in this situation. May God grant you peace and strength to get through this and be able once again to smile at a memory rather than have only the tears that flow so easily now. To be so proud of your loved one and so saddened at the same time is a mix of emotions very difficult to deal with as our hearts both burst with pride and pain together.
I am sorry that I never knew your soldier personally. While they can never be replaced, neither will they ever be forgotten . You must trust that sometime, someday the loving memories you have will help to sustain you and help you go on. This courageous soldier will forever be your Angel watching over you all for the rest of your lives. It's what brings me some measure of peace and comfort and I hope it will you as well.
To his family and friends in pain, I offer this comfort: When you find yourself in that dark sorrowful place, think not only of how you will miss him, but instead recall the years, days, hours and minutes gifted to you by his presence. The one thing that cannot be taken from you is your wonderful memories that now will mean more than ever.
If you ever want to talk, I'm only an e:mail away and would love for you to tell me more about your Hero.
God Bless this soldier and family who gave all and God Bless legacy.com for setting up this site where families can so quickly share their condolences and prayers with others like themselves.
