As memorial day approaches and we remember the our fellow marines that gave their lives I can't help but remember Sgt Zimmerman. I served with him in 3/2 in iraq, he was in our platoon and I became freinds with him, when he got moved to the co. He would let us use his internet whenever we had to patrol to the co. Patrol base and we would talk alot. The day he passed my squad responded to the call and I remember talking to him as we put him on the helicopter. I suffer from things with my tours to combat and he lives with me everyday so I wear him on my arm along with my best friend who was killed in Iraq.

To the family of Sgt. Luke J. Zimmerman:
The Fort Snelling Memorial Chapel Foundation will be honoring your loved one at the non-denominational Christian Memorial Day Remembrance worship service at 11:00 a.m. on Sunday, 26 May 2013. We will remember the casualties of the Global War on Terrorism from Minnesota … and the bordering states of Iowa, North Dakota, South Dakota and Wisconsin. Outside of the historic Fort Snelling Veterans Memorial Chapel will be a “Memorial Garden” filled with some 300 white crosses bearing the names of the war dead … including your loved one.
The Memorial Garden will be encircled with larger white crosses representing all of the wars of our nation's history and give honor to all who have served in the United States Armed Forces and made the ultimate sacrifice for the freedoms we enjoy today. Wreaths will be placed at the foot of each 8-foot cross bearing the number of U.S. Service Members killed in each of America's conflicts.
I would like to extend to your family an invitation to honor us with your presence at worship as we pay tribute to the sacrifice made by your service member and family. Our pastor, Kenneth L. Beale, Jr., will preach a message entitled, “Freedom:Free, but Costly.” At the conclusion of the worship hour, all of the congregation will be invited to silently pay their respects at the garden and there place poppies at each of the crosses. A Memorial Rifle Squad of the Fort Snelling National Cemetery will fire vollies as the US flag is lowered to half-staff and Taps is played. Following your visit to the Memorial Garden, your family is invited to attend an informal reception (weather permitting) outside of the Chapel. The Memorial Garden will remain until 5:00 p.m. on Monday, 27 May (Memorial Day).
As this Christian worship service has traditionally been well attended, we would be happy to reserve seating for you and yours. To do so, kindly call (651/286-7296) and leave a voice message indicating your veterans' name and the number of persons attending. For more information about the Foundation or driving directions to the historic chapel at Fort Snelling, visit our website at: www.fortsnellingmcf.org Special rates for nearby hotels will be available. For more information call (651/286-7296) or email the office ([email protected]) and leave your name and contact information.
Also, beginning at dusk (8:30 p.m.) on Saturday 25 May through dawn (6:30 a.m.) on Sunday, 26 May, a “Prayer Vigil for Peace” will be held in the sanctuary of the Chapel. You are invited to stop by, light a candle and place it at the foot of your loved one's cross in the Memorial Garden … and then enter the Chapel for prayer.
If you are not able to attend, we pray that you would find comfort in knowing that our prayers are with you and all of the fallen heroes.
Respectfully,

I served with Luke in Hawaii with Fox 2/3.
I knew him since bootcamp, School of Infantry, 3 deployments and our time in Police duty in Hawaii.
He was one of my best friend.
Like everybody else that served with him, he was that guy that got it done no complaints, easy to work.
He will be miss, and i will always remember him as a brother.
To Luke i will not forget our long runs from Camp smith to the Aloha Stadium and our days of liberty in San Diego, Hawaii, Japan.
Will see in you in the other side brother in the near future.

I served in Iraq for over a year, embedded with MNF-I headquarters at Camp Victory outside Baghdad, and returned six months ago. The memory of Sgt. Zimmerman stays with me as a part of the experience and the post-deployment re-integration process.

To the man who gave my family its freedom. To the cousin i could have known better than i did. To my Aunt & Uncle & Leon i can not thank him enough. He is our hero. Many words will be written of these heros and there deeds. Let all who read these stories understand the brave who went before us. When questions about them arise let us pass on our stories of these men and women. Let us also not forget how brave WE all are too. I feel in their strength lies our own to which we hold.

October 27, 2008
Holding you all in my thoughts and prayers.
The Wind on The Downs
“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”
(Written by Marian Allen during World War l )
Two lines that I wish you to keep near your heart…….
“You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe”
I did not know Luke, but I am remembering
his service and sacrifice. He is my hero. !

The Other Side
i'm over on the other side
where life and death softly divide.
left my skin and bones behind
now i'm over on the other side.
can you feel me there with you?
my breath is gone but i'm not through.
loved you then and i still do
from over on the other side.
i can fly. really fly.
below the earth ... all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.
it's good here on the other side.
the sweetest songs...the bluest skies.
thank you for the tears you cried
but it's good here on the other side.
i can fly. really fly. below the earth...all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side
the world is smaller than a needle's eye.
where life and death softly divide.
when you leave your skin and bones behind
i'll be waiting on the other side.
i can fly. really fly. below the earth ... all through the sky.
go tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

~ To the Family of Sgt. Luke Zimmerman~ It does not seem possible that almost 2 years have passed since Luke's death. I am a member of the Patriot Guard & stood the flagline that windy day outside Robinsonville Pres. Church for his funeral. I will never forget the V formation of geese that flew over the church as the procession exited with his casket. They were at tree-top level & were "honking" very loudly. It was an additional salute to him, along with the Marine 21 gun volley & taps being played. May he rest in peace at Arlington with his fellow Soldiers/Marines. My deepest regards & continued sympathy. ~ Michael Weaver, Patriot Guard, Sr Ride Cpt, N.E. Wisconsin ~ Army Medic, Vietnam, 1968-69 ~

I atteneded the memorial service for Sgt Zimmerman and the other 14 that gave their lives, a total of 18 from the 3/2. I just wanted you to know that my son still speaks of him and the sacrifice that he made, along with Eric Herzberg, Miller and Johnson that last deployment. I am sorry for the loss of this great marine. We had a get together when the 3/2 got together and my son made a video honoring these four great Marines. He also went to see LCpl Herzberg, with his dad. He found Zimmerman also and paid his respects. To the family: Our family the Carmans will never forget your son, father, brother, uncle and cousin. I visited Arlington National Cemetery today and discovered that Sgt Luke James Zimmerman is buried there, Section 60, site 8435, very close to York Drive. [I was searching for the final resting place of another American hero of OIF, and was having trouble finding it, so I looked closely at every gravestone.]
The weather was a beautiful spring day, with a blue sky and a light breeze. Section 60 continues to receive American heroes from OIF/OEF and several families spent some serious time there, on the first Memorial Day since burial at Arlington. I left flowers for Sgt Zimmerman to honor his service and his memory.
Sincerely,

I'll never forget Luke's smile, It was truly contagious, I can't tell you how many times we ended up getting smoked on the quarterdeck back in boot because I would catch a glimpse of that smirk and completely lose my bearing. We served together in boot and SOI, until we were sent to our different units. He was an outstanding Marine and an amazing person who lifted the spirits of those around him. His memory will live forever as I will surely pass the story of this great Man and Heroic Marine to my children someday. My deepest sympathies to his Family. He will be truly missed.

There is nothing that I can say or do to take away the pain or bring you peace in your time of sorrow, but I will offer you and your family my heart felt condolences. I also offer you my prayers that in time the pain will easy and the memories of your HERO will carry you through each day and night. I want to thank your HERO, for his/her selfless act of becoming a member of the armed forces, his/her willingness to defend the United States of America, all that we hold sacred and for the sacrifice that will forever be etched in the memories of all those who knew him/her. Though tears can never bring him/her back, we hope that our tears express our gratitude for the sacrifice that he/she made and our sorrow at his/her passing. I believe for every fallen HERO there is a star shining brightly up above to remind us of the precious gift we were given.
Your mission on earth is complete and you are now a member of GOD’s Heavenly armed forces. Stand down brave warrior and take your rightful place in Heaven with all the HEROES who have passed before.
I made a special promise to LE RON A. WILSON, a dear family friend who joined the Army with three other friends, one of whom is my son (Le Ron was killed in action on 07/06/07 at the age of 18) on the day he was laid to rest as I touched his coffin, that I would never forget him nor would I forget those that gave their lives for our country before him, with him and after him and so when I came across www.legacy.com, I thought what a great way to keep my promise to Le Ron, so I will continue to leave tributes in each guest book until the day there is no longer the need to leave these tributes to a FALLEN HERO.
REST IN PEACE, HERO, YOU WILL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN!!

I dont know what to say, but that I was one of the Marines that carried him onto the aircraft that day. not a day goes by that I dont think about it. We were there in less the 5 mins after we got the call and had him on the aircraft and I swear we did our best. And I will be going for my 3rd trip to Iraq with HMM-364 to help more Marines this time

To Luke's parents, I can only say that while I was not Luke's best friend, that he was one of mine. I only found out about him when I was in Fallujah and I saw a list of RCT-5 KIA's and I saw the face of my friend staring me in the face, reading can be such a curse sometimes. That was the only time I ever cried in Iraq.
I first met Luke in Infantry School. We had the mutual curse of having very similar last names and we were always the last out of our 400-plus class to receive mail every night. We were also buddy's during exercises out in the Field and needless to say, you spend a night in a fighting hole with someone, you become friends very fast.
Luke was always the guy who pushed me to be better, even when we were put into different platoons in Fox 2/3. He always was, and is, what I've tried to be as a leader of Men. I know that I will never be equal to his example.
I'd say what everybody else says, that I extend my hand in condolence for the loss of your son, but I won't. I'd quote a Bible verse to try and assuage your loss, but I won't. I will, however, say that I was lucky enough to know your son in person and for that, I am a better humna being. There is not a day that goes by that I don't thank God for men such as your son. He was a pillar for me when I was a young Marine as I try to be for my own Marines. God Bless you for making such a wonderful human being, a man, a Marine.

I served with Sgt Zimmerman (then Lcpl Zimmerman) while serving as the Platoon Sgt for 3rd Platoon Fox Company 2/3. Sgt Zimmerman was part of another Platoon, but the professionalism and respect of his seniors and peers I can still remember clearly. The photo of Sgt Zimmerman and friends at the Marine Bar in Vienna, Austria also reminds me of when I spoke to Sgt Zimmerman about MSG duty as I too once sat at that same spot with friends and had a picture taken. “Paid in Full”
In Honor of The War Against Terrorism’s Fallen and Injured Marines
Marines through and through, they paid the price
Six thousand miles away, we live the life
For which they paid with their blood, spirits and bodies
We will never forget what they paid in full
We hope and we pray that somehow their loved ones find comfort
In God, in the flag, in the memory of their loved ones’ bravery
They’re gone now but we see them still…proud, strong, willing
Covering each other’s backs… courageous, moving forward
What kind of love did they have for us to be willing
To give it all for the Black, White, Jew, Christian, Muslim?
We don’t comprehend but we honor you now and forever
You are Our Marines…some living…some not
Forever in our minds we will cherish your lives
Lives too short yet immortal they’ll be
Highest brotherhood of the few, the proud
They stand at attention, and we gaze with awe
Some know their names not, but our admiration for them
Flows limitless within us, between us
They sacrificed their limbs or their lives
Freedom still rings, a soft sound across the miles
It tolls slowly; all of creation takes note
Of the lives that were lost for people unknown
Out of sight but not lost; forever among us
The starched blues marching straight
Toward the place where we will meet them
Many years from now…how we loved them…
Well done beloved Brothers and Sisters…You’ve paid it in full
Always Faithful Marines, You Have Paid it in Full

To The Zimmerman Family:
Please know how deeply sorry we are for the lose of your son and hero. We met Luke during his time in Vienna, Austria. We have two boys - ages 4 & 5 and Luke would always stop and play with them when we were at the Marine house for functions. I can remember Luke playing with our boys like it was just the other day. The boys had some neat trucks and Luke bent down and said that they were so cool and he would have loved to had those when he was little. Then he took his time and played with them for awhile. Luke was a wonderful young man - he was very polite and such a sweetie. You've all been in our prayers since we learned of his passing. Please accept our deepest condolences. Just know that he made such a positive impact in so many people's lives. Luke paid the ultimate sacarifice and he will always be hero to us.
Our thoughts and prayers are with you all!

To the family:
I was Luke's squad leader for a short time in Austria prior to my departure and I remember picking him up from the airport as if it were yesterday. I was excited to receive a warm body to help lighten the guard rotation but by the end of the 30 minute car ride I realized we were getting much more than just a warm body. Luke's motivation and professionalism enabled him to carry out his duties as a Marine Security Guard in an exemplary manner as well as make significant contributions to the efficiency and effectiveness of the Detachment. His character, dedication to the Corps and selfless service to the nation epitomize the word "Marine." Luke is a hero and I am sorry for your loss.

I had the honor of serving with Luke at his first duty station in Hawaii with 2/3 Marines. We called him the "WorkHorse" because he would volunteer for every working party no matter what it was. Some of my favorite memories of that time were going on liberty with him in Tokyo. SGT Zimmerman was one of the finest Marines I ever served with and truly a great human being that left us too soon. I am currently serving in Iraq with his name proudly written on my helmet. To his family and extended family, my deepest condolences...To Luke, just like Ozzy said man, "I'll see on the other side".

I have just learned of your loss, and would like to offer my deepest sympathy. Luke was one of our Marine Security Guards here in Vienna, Austria, during 2004/2005. He was a dilligent, professional Marine at work, and outside of work HE WAS THE PARTY.
I would like to be informed as soon as a charity is designated or a scholarship is set up, so that colleagues may contribute. I hope that you will find strength in knowing that ALL of us here at the U.S. Embassy Vienna are truly saddened by, but respect, his ultimate sacrifice.

We are comforted to know that our Marines are serving their country with such honor and bravery. To the Family of Sgt. Luke J. Zimmerman:
I will stand in grief with this soldier's family to honor him. For every fallen HERO there is a bright star that shines in the evening sky to remind us of the cherished gift we were given – even if for too short a time.
My heart breaks again as I sign yet another guest book of another courageous young soldier who gave their life so selflessly. I wish I never found myself in a position to have to sign another guestbook for the rest of my life, but I promised Brent that neither he nor any like him would be forgotten and so I will continue until the day there is no longer the need.
We lost our son SFC Brent A. Adams on 12/1/05 and it seems like yesterday. I wish so badly there were things I could say to you right now to make the pain you are feeling go away, but I know first hand there simply are no words that will bring you the comfort and peace your heart aches for. Just know that you are not alone. My heart, thoughts, and prayers are with you all as you go through this tragedy moment by moment and as you mourn this loss.
We don't know each other, will probably never meet, but will forever be united in the loss of our Heroes. We have, unfortunately joined a group none of us wanted to join, an ever-growing group of families in this situation. May God grant you peace and strength to get through this and be able once again to smile at a memory rather than have only the tears that flow so easily now. To be so proud of your loved one and so saddened at the same time is a mix of emotions very difficult to deal with as our hearts both burst with pride and pain together.
I am sorry that I never knew your soldier personally. While they can never be replaced, neither will they ever be forgotten. You must trust that sometime, someday the loving memories you have will help to sustain you and help you go on. This courageous soldier will forever be your Angel watching over you all for the rest of your lives. It's what brings me some measure of peace and comfort and I hope it will you as well.
To his family and friends in pain, I offer this comfort: When you find yourself in that dark sorrowful place, think not only of how you will miss him, but instead recall the years, days, hours and minutes gifted to you by his presence. The one thing that cannot be taken from you is your wonderful memories that now will mean more than ever.
If you ever want to talk, I'm only an e:mail away and would love for you to tell me more about your Hero.
God Bless this soldier and family who gave all and God Bless legacy.com for setting up this site where families can so quickly share their condolences and prayers with others like themselves.
