I have a story and a momento of sorts about your heroic son.
Our boys!!
May 29, 2023
He's 26 now and a loving kind and generous man with an amazing little man of his own. What an amazing gift you gave to a 6 yr old little boy who loved you so very much and 20 years later has not breathed a day of air without you.

I miss you buddy. I think of you often. I think of the beer we didn't get to have when we got back. I think of the friend my children didn't get to meet. But they know you. They've heard the stories of what a hero and great man you were. I know you watch over all of us. Until we meet again my brother...

We did not personally know Sgt. Straseskie, but one of our sons served with him in that same unit and beside him in Iraq. On Memorial Day 2003, we planted a little Locust tree, about an inch in diameter and four feet tall, in our backyard to commemorate Sgt. Straseskie and the sacrifice he made. Not only did he sacrifice his life fighting for the Freedom of the Iraqi people and the security of Americans and the rest of the world, he did so while trying to save the lives of his fellow Marines. For twelve years now, I have been reminded of Sgt. Straseskie's sacrifice every time I mow my lawn, rake up the leaves, trim the branches or stand in the shade this tree provides. I am also reminded that his sacrifice and the sacrifices made by all those before, are what make possible those little things that we all sometimes grumble about or take for granted. Twelve years later, that once little tree has matured into what you see in the picture I snapped this morning. My heart goes out to the family of Sgt. Straseskie today, I pray that they have found the strength to endure their loss, and the understanding necessary to have peace with his absence from their lives. I thank God that our sons were returned home to us, and I thank God, Sgt. Straseskie's parents, and the United States Marine Corps for molding people like Sgt. Kirk Allen Straseskie to protect us.

Kirk- it's been a little over 10 years now. I really miss you.. I love you so much. We visited your grave on your death anniversary. We let balloons go with cards that should have made it to heaven by now. My birthday is in 11 days. I'm going to be a teenager!(: I hope you're looking down on me from heaven and are really proud of my accomplishments. I dedicate all of my sports events to you. Sometimes I look through the old newspaper articles.
Well, I have to go now. I LOVE YOU SO MUCH KIRK! I cry about you. I love you, and you are my hero<3
I am the one on the Far left of the photo with my AAV Crew, Sgt Ski and his Marines that rode in my AAV.

Sgt Straseski,
I think of you every day. You rode in my AAV for 3 months in Iraq 2003. I have recently had a flag flown over my Regimental Headquarters here in Afghanistan. I am sending it to your family as a token of my appreciation of your sacrifice. You are a great Marine, and did a heroic act to try to save others. I have told my children of our times together, and wha t a hero you were. My daughter who is 6 likes to tell people about my heros bracelete and tell them that "My dady wears this to honor a hero", and Sgt Ski, you were a hero. I will see you again in heaven as you are guarding the gates until your relief arrives. Semper Fi Sgt Ski, you were a great friend, hero, and mentor.

To the family of Sgt. Kirk Allen Straseskie:
The Fort Snelling Memorial Chapel Foundation will be honoring your loved one at the non-denominational Christian Memorial Day Remembrance worship service at 11:00 a.m. on Sunday, 26 May 2013. We will remember the casualties of the Global War on Terrorism from Minnesota … and the bordering states of Iowa, North Dakota, South Dakota and Wisconsin. Outside of the historic Fort Snelling Veterans Memorial Chapel will be a “Memorial Garden” filled with some 300 white crosses bearing the names of the war dead … including your loved one.
The Memorial Garden will be encircled with larger white crosses representing all of the wars of our nation's history and give honor to all who have served in the United States Armed Forces and made the ultimate sacrifice for the freedoms we enjoy today. Wreaths will be placed at the foot of each 8-foot cross bearing the number of U.S. Service Members killed in each of America's conflicts.
I would like to extend to your family an invitation to honor us with your presence at worship as we pay tribute to the sacrifice made by your service member and family. Our pastor, Kenneth L. Beale, Jr., will preach a message entitled, “Freedom:Free, but Costly.” At the conclusion of the worship hour, all of the congregation will be invited to silently pay their respects at the garden and there place poppies at each of the crosses. A Memorial Rifle Squad of the Fort Snelling National Cemetery will fire vollies as the US flag is lowered to half-staff and Taps is played. Following your visit to the Memorial Garden, your family is invited to attend an informal reception (weather permitting) outside of the Chapel. The Memorial Garden will remain until 5:00 p.m. on Monday, 27 May (Memorial Day).
As this Christian worship service has traditionally been well attended, we would be happy to reserve seating for you and yours. To do so, kindly call (651/286-7296) and leave a voice message indicating your veterans' name and the number of persons attending. For more information about the Foundation or driving directions to the historic chapel at Fort Snelling, visit our website at: www.fortsnellingmcf.org Special rates for nearby hotels will be available. For more information call (651/286-7296) or email the office ([email protected]) and leave your name and contact information.
Also, beginning at dusk (8:30 p.m.) on Saturday 25 May through dawn (6:30 a.m.) on Sunday, 26 May, a “Prayer Vigil for Peace” will be held in the sanctuary of the Chapel. You are invited to stop by, light a candle and place it at the foot of your loved one's cross in the Memorial Garden … and then enter the Chapel for prayer.
If you are not able to attend, we pray that you would find comfort in knowing that our prayers are with you and all of the fallen heroes.

Hello,
We would like to express our deepest condolences and also let the Straseskie Family know that we recently sent Care Packages to American troops in the war zones. Each box carried a dedication sheet that includes the name, service information and a photo of your loved one. We recognize that this is a humble tribute, but we wanted you to know that it is heartfelt and made possible by thousands of like-minded individuals in the youth hockey community and beyond. We will not forget. May God Bless you and keep you strong.

Kirk was honestly my hero because he was always right beside me when I needed him most. Even though I was only 2 when e died, he was always at my side when I got hurt, when I was sad, or when I had Togo to bed. He may be dead, but I know that he is still here with us right now. My uncle ray and his other friend Nick are still alive, I am actually with one of them right now. Anyway, whenever I go to my dad's, I ask him......... " Can we visit Uncle Kirk's grave?" he usually says yes, but, whn it's yucky outside, I don't ask. All that I pretty much want to say is, I really really loved and still do love him.

”Honor and Remember” - “Project Compassion” We love our Soldiers! We love our country and we cannot express enough love and compassion to the families of our fallen heroes. War does not discriminate – It breaks our hearts to see the faces of the fallen. We want to give this gift to the hero’s Mother, Father and/or spouse. We are a 501c3 nonprofit organization! Almost 2,000 portraits have been completed and shipped to the parents and or spouse - at no cost as this is a gift from one American to another!
This is a gift! We have wonderful sponsors who help with the costs, and want you know that everyone here at Project Compassion does and will always CARE.
Contact us directly at [email protected] or go to www.heropaintings.com . If you have already had a portrait completed, we pray that you are enjoying the portrait and God Bless You.

Kirk to me is like the stars on the sky. I have never been so inspired to be a marine and fight for others just like all my other uncles. He is the only one who can inspire me to do anything that dangerous.War is something that I don't appreciate people talking about him around me 'cause then I will burst into tears. If I were old enough to go to war, this would make me say "I feel like my uncle Kirk." If anybody is reading this comment, please if you see me, and if you know me, please try to inspire me to join the marines. I would like to be just like my favorite uncle.
I love you Kirkie!!!

Kirk is my hero. I wish he never would have had to go to war. I cant believe he risked his life this much. He was my favorite uncle. I don't think that anyone could replace his soul. If he didn't have to go to war, he would still be my hero, and best uncle.I have a picture of him my sister and my brother on my brother's 7th birthday. He was sneezing in his arm.
On his 6th death anniversary, I had my appendix taken out. I was only in 1st grade.At first I was really scared, but then they told me I was going to be asleep. My mom used to work with the person that was giving me my surgery.
Otherwise beside Kirk. I have two other uncles. But ever since Kirk died, he's always been my hero!!!

This is the first time I could even come to this site. Kirk was my nephew. His mother, my older sister Dianna, also died an untimely death at the age of 42. Her son, Kirk, was her "baby". She died years before Kirk lost his young life. Now mother and son are laid to rest side by side. When I visit this site, I know that they are no longer there but in a better place where death has no hold. They live on in our memories and in our hearts. When I read others thoughts and feelings on this site, I could now smile and my tears were not from the loss of my loved ones but from the knowledge that they are not forgotten....... Many thanks, Debi Guenterberg

I was devastated when I heard the news, back in May of 2003.
I had just seen him 5 months previously, when I was home for Christmas. I never knew that when he came to hug me, and say "good-bye" as he always did when I went home, and he was there too, that it'd be the last time I would see him.

I thought of you today,and realize life can't ever be the same.
the tears and heartache are immeasureable,at the mention of your name.
There are no words or condolences that help my crying heart;
But I love to hear all the good stories and humor,even if folks forget some part.
They say that time heals all wounds,but it'll take more than the passing of time;
And you know,I've got to deal with this confusion and anger,that storms this heart of mine !
But this I know -- you enriched my life and the lives of others, in such a special way;
And I hope you're there to greet me, when I reach the end of my last day.
We'll have such a blessed reunion,and it'll be clearer then too;
For then I'll see just what was accomplished,when your all - to - short life was through.
So till then -- go on -- I must, but there's an emptiness nothing of this world can fill;
And so it seems the echo of you voice to me says:
" UNTIL "

Holding you all in my thoughts and prayers.
The Wind on The Downs
“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”
(Written by Marian Allen during World War l )
Two lines that I wish you to keep near your heart…….
“You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe”
I did not know Kirk, but I am remembering

The Other Side
i'm over on the other side
where life and death softly divide.
left my skin and bones behind
now i'm over on the other side.
can you feel me there with you?
my breath is gone but i'm not through.
loved you then and i still do
from over on the other side.
i can fly. really fly.
below the earth ... all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.
it's good here on the other side.
the sweetest songs...the bluest skies.
thank you for the tears you cried
but it's good here on the other side.
i can fly. really fly. below the earth...all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side
the world is smaller than a needle's eye.
where life and death softly divide.
when you leave your skin and bones behind
i'll be waiting on the other side.
i can fly. really fly. below the earth ... all through the sky.
go tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

Outside of the historic Fort Snelling Veterans Memorial Chapel will be a “Memorial Garden” filled with white crosses bearing the names of the war dead … including your loved one.
I would like to extend to your family an invitation to honor us with your presence at worship as we pay tribute to the sacrifice made by your service member and family. Our pastor, U.S. Army Chaplain, LTC Kenneth L. Beale, Jr. will preach a message entitled “The Price of Freedom” At the conclusion of the worship hour, all of the congregation will be invited to silently pay their respects at the garden and place poppies at each of the crosses. An honor guard squad will be on hand to fire vollies as the US flag is lowered to half-staff and Taps is played.
As this Christian worship service has traditionally been well attended, we would be happy to reserve seating for you and yours. To do so, kindly call (612/970-7866) and leave a voice message indicating your veterans’ name and the number of persons attending. For more information about the Foundation or driving directions to the historic chapel at Fort Snelling, visit our website at: www.fortsnellingmcf.org
Also, beginning at dusk (8:30 p.m.) on Sat. 24 May through dawn (6:30 a.m.) on Sun. 25 May, a “PrayerVigil for Peace” will be held. You are invited to stop by and light a candle and place it at the foot of your loved one’s cross in the Memorial Garden, then enter the Chapel for prayer.
If you are not able to attend, we pray that you would find comfort in knowing that our prayers are with you and all of the fallen heroes.
Respectfully,

Father we entrust our brother Kirk to your mercy. You loved him greatly in this life: now that he is freed from all its cares, give him happiness and peace forever. Welcome him now into paradise where there will be no more sorrow, no more weeping or pain, but only peace and joy with Jesus your Son, and the Holy Spirit forever and ever.
May God hold Kirk in the palm of His hand. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. My deepest sympathy.

I don't pretend to know what to say or do that would bring you peace in your time of sorrow, but I will offer my heart felt condolences. I also offer you my prayers that in time the pain will easy and the memories of your HERO will carry you through each day and night. I want to thank your HERO, for his/her selfless act of becoming a member of the armed forces, his/her willingness to defend the United States of America, all that we hold sacred and for the sacrifice that will forever be etched in the memories of all those who knew him/her. Though tears can never bring him/her back, we hope that our tears express our gratitude for the sacrifice that he/she made and our sorrow at his/her passing. I believe for every fallen HERO there is a star shining brightly up above to remind us of the precious gift we were given.
Your mission on earth is complete and you are now a member of GOD’s Heavenly armed forces. Stand down brave warrior and take your rightful place in Heaven with all the HEROES who have passed before.
I made a special promise to LE RON A. WILSON (KIA on 07/06/07) on the day he was laid to rest as I touched his coffin, that I would never forget him nor would I forget those that gave their lives for our country before him, with him and after him and so when I came across www.legacy.com, I thought what a great way to keep my promise to Le Ron, so I will continue to leave tributes in each guest book until the day there is no longer the need to leave these tributes to a FALLEN HERO.
REST IN PEACE, HERO, YOU WILL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN!!

To the family and friends
I have only just begun this journey and may not have known your loved one personally. I grew up in a small town in Wisconsin and felt I needed to extend to you my deepest condolences.
No words will ever express the grief those close to this lost treasure are feeling. I can only say that I can share this grief as I too lost a loved one July 8, 2006. I will continue to pray for the safety of our soldiers and especially the family and friends of our lost hero’s. I only hope the memories will carry us through. I will continue pray that you also will believe and know that our heavenly father will not give us more than we can handle.
As always I read (and cry) through the memorials of our lost hero’s, So many people have already expressed the things I would also say. I am amazed and take comfort that so many people care. I can only thank you for the sacrifice you and especially Kirk have made to protect our country. As others have said “I am only an email away.” I would be honored if you so choose to share about this fine hero.
Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Matthew 11:28
