Gavin L. Neighbor Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jan. 28, 2005.
Cpl. Gavin Neighbor, a 20-year-old from Somerset, Ohio, couldn't wait to join the Army, joining the long list of relatives who had served their country in the military. His parents supported that decision, even after they received the news that Neighbor had died June 10 in a grenade attack in Baghdad. "He loved making me proud," stepfather Willie Neighbor said while clenching a plaque that his stepson sent home after he earned his paratrooper wings. Members of Neighbor's family had served in the military in World War II, Korea and Vietnam. "Gavin was the first family member who didn't get to come home," an uncle, Mike Bonham, said. He was prepared to go overseas and eager to serve his country, his mother said. "He loved what he was doing. He wouldn't have given it up for nothing." Neighbor, a 2001 graduate of New Lexington High School, wanted to make the military his career and eventually hoped to join the elite Army Rangers, his parents said. Neighbor had proposed to his girlfriend, Rachel Sanderson, before leaving for the Middle East.

”Honor and Remember” - “Project Compassion” We love our Soldiers! We love our country and we cannot express enough love and compassion to the families of our fallen heroes. War does not discriminate – It breaks our hearts to see the faces of the fallen. We want to give this gift to the hero’s Mother, Father and/or spouse. We are a 501c3 nonprofit organization! Almost 2,000 portraits have been completed and shipped to the parents and or spouse - at no cost as this is a gift from one American to another!
This is a gift! We have some wonderful sponsors who help with the costs, and only want you know that we care.
Contact us directly at [email protected] or go to www.heropaintings.com . If you have already had a portrait completed, we pray that you are enjoying the portrait and God Bless You.
Sincerely and Respectfully,

Wow, I can't believe its been over 6 years since that day. The longer it gets the more vivid it is in my memories. You were a brother to us all, and I thought you would have been the one that would have for sure made it home. I'm sorry things had to turn out the way they did. Over the years we have spread into the wind, as people tend to take different roads from a defining moment. But all roads always lead back to your memory, and it, my friend, is never forgotten...

Gavin was a good friend and an even better soldier. He is one i could always trust and will never forget. I'm deeply sorry for your lose. There are no words to describe how i felt when i herd the news' and i cant imagine how you must have felt. Losing him was like losing a brother and best friend. It is difficult to know what to say since I want to express my sincere sympathy to the family and friends of Cpl Neighbor. Please know that your loved one is not forgotten. I wish everyone impacted by this tragic loss strength and peace. I hope that Cpl Neighbor knew that there are people in America who respect his great courage in serving as a member of the US military. Although I did not know him, I know that he must have been a very special person to do something that most Americans will never have to experience, and for that we can never say thank you enough.
Thank you Cpl Neighbor!

To the family of Cpl. Neighbor,
Please know that just as your loved one will remain in your hearts and minds, his sacrifice and that of your family, will remain with the people he died defending. Words cannot express the gratitude we feel for his bravery and selflessness, or the heartache we feel for your loss. God grant you the peace that passes all understanding.

Holding you all in my thoughts and prayers.

The Wind on The Downs

“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”

(Written by Marian Allen during World War l )

Two lines that I wish you to keep near your heart…….

“You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe”

I did not know Gavin, but I am remembering
his service. He is my hero. !

The Other Side

i'm over on the other side
where life and death softly divide.
left my skin and bones behind
now i'm over on the other side.

can you feel me there with you?
my breath is gone but i'm not through.
loved you then and i still do
from over on the other side.

i can fly. really fly.
below the earth ... all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

it's good here on the other side.
the sweetest songs...the bluest skies.
thank you for the tears you cried
but it's good here on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth...all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side

the world is smaller than a needle's eye.
where life and death softly divide.
when you leave your skin and bones behind
i'll be waiting on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth ... all through the sky.
go tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

My name is Pam Albaugh, I am from New Lex but now live in Coshocton. I have visited gavins grave and prayed for him. I am signing this today not only for myself, but on behalf of my friends Terri and Lynette who often visit the gravesite and talk to Gavin to let him know how much his service means to them. I thought the family would like to know that your son is always remembered and respected...My deepest sympaties to you and your family....

You are remembered and respected. Thank you Cpl Neighbor!

My name is SGT Grounds. I did not know Gavin personally. However, I was in the same unit as him (3/325 AIR, 82nd ABN DIV) and we were deployed together in 2003, just I was in Alpha Company, and he was in Charlie Company.

I can still hear the roll call from his Memorial Service that we held in Iraq.

His death was felt in the entire Battalion. From what I knew of him, he was a great soldier, and would've made a fine US Army Ranger if he'd been given the chance.

Best wishes to his family, and his friends.

You are missed Gavin, even by those that barely knew you.

July 29, 2007

If this person can stand in battle to ensure my freedom, then I will stand in grief with his/her family to honor him/her. For every fallen HERO there is a bright star that shines in the evening sky to remind us of the cherished gift we were given – even if for too short a time.
My heart breaks again as I sign yet another guest book of another courageous young soldier who gave their life so selflessly. I wish I never found myself in a position to have to sign another guestbook for the rest of my life, but I promised Le Ron A. Wilson (a dear friend KIA 7/6/07, 18yrs old) that neither he nor any like him would be forgotten and so I will continue until the day there is no longer the need.

Gavin,
To my HERO. I love and miss you so much. There isn't a hour or minute of a day that I don't think of you. I am so proud of you. I wear a braclet with you name on it, in honor of you and carry your picture with me all the time. When I am having a hard time, I just look at your picture and I can hear you saying to me, "Mom, It'll be ok", That little phrase that you always said to me, gives me the inspiration to go on. You always knew what to say.
Son I miss your big hugs and your, "I love you Mom", especially when I would make you say it in front of all your friends, you hated that but you always said it back to me no matter what. You knew I would keep saying it to you untill you said it back. Then you would hurry and get away from me before I did it again. It wasn't long, all your friends would say it back to me too when I hollared it out to you. There are so many memories of you that keep me laughing and crying. Your dad, sister and two neices love and miss you too. You live on thru me and will never be forgotten.
I LOVE YOU,
Mom
