Richard P. Ramey Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jan. 28, 2005.
When Richard Ramey was a third grader, a teacher asked him what he wanted to do when he grew up. He replied: "I''ll go to war and fight." "The teacher called and was a little alarmed and I said, ''No, that''s my son,''" recalled his mother, Julie Ramey. "Since we were kids, every Halloween he was either Rambo or some other type of soldier," childhood friend Brian Shurtz said. Staff Sgt. Ramey, 27, of Canton, Ohio, was killed Feb. 8 in Mahmudiyah, Iraq, when insurgents attacked with explosives. He was assigned to Fort Knox, and was looking forward to an assignment in Alaska beginning in late March, said his father, Jerry Ramey. "Richard loved to do his job. No matter where it would take him," Julia Ramey said. "He really felt deeply that he wanted to protect people that couldn''t protect themselves."

It’s that day again. The 11 day of the 11 month. I think of you often & for some one I only knew briefly you sure did leave an impression on me. I wish things were different. I wish I could call you and just see how things have been. I try to live my life to the fullest, trying to be the best I can. I do this because you did not get that chance. I miss you and refuse to let any one forget what a great soldier & friend you were.
Until next time; remember you’re on mind.
Happy Veterans Day Richard.

I remember going out on a short rapelling trip with Rich and another friend of ours Chuck, when we were stationed at Fort Knox, KY. At one point we were practicing rapels off of a small train bridge out in the woods somewhere. Rich accidentally linked onto the short rope, and nearly started his rapel before one of us noticed the mistake. Rich didn't skip a beat before saying, "Nothing like a 40 foot rapel off a 5 foot rope!" We were laughing about that for months. Damn good guy. He had a little silver 1/2-ton pickup truck onto which he had affixed the words "Deer Bucket." What a ham; he loved hunting and fishing. One time, at the barracks, he strung up a deer and gutted it right in the back yard! He was the guy who introduced me to eating boiled crawdads (a word I didn't know before I met him). I miss the hell out of him.

I served with Rich in Ft Drum, NY when he first came into the EOD program. I have many fond memories of conversations we had in the barracks prior to his volunteering for deployment to Kosovo with another unit. I left soon after before he had returned from that deployment. I was a senior team leader and he was always full of questions. I had given him some of my personal tools prior to his deployment. I was shocked the day I heard that he had died. He was a good guy and a solid soldier. His memory will live on always and his actions will be reflected for an eternity. I pray that he rests in peace.

I don't pretend to know what to say or do that would bring you peace in your time of sorrow, but I will offer my heart felt condolences. I also offer you my prayers that in time the pain will easy and the memories of your HERO will carry you through each day and night. I want to thank your HERO, for his/her selfless act of becoming a member of the armed forces, his/her willingness to defend the United States of America, all that we hold sacred and for the sacrifice that will forever be etched in the memories of all those who knew him/her. Though tears can never bring him/her back, we hope that our tears express our gratitude for the sacrifice that he/she made and our sorrow at his/her passing. I believe for every fallen HERO there is a star shining brightly up above to remind us of the precious gift we were given.

Your mission on earth is complete and you are now a member of GOD’s Heavenly armed forces. Stand down brave warrior and take your rightful place in Heaven with all the HEROES who have passed before.

I made a special promise to LE RON A. WILSON (KIA on 07/06/07) on the day he was laid to rest as I touched his coffin, that I would never forget him nor would I forget those that gave their lives for our country before him, with him and after him and so when I came across www.legacy.com, I thought what a great way to keep my promise to Le Ron, so I will continue to leave tributes in each guest book until the day there is no longer the need to leave these tributes to a FALLEN HERO.

REST IN PEACE, HERO, YOU WILL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN!!

I'm honored to say that I knew and loved Ramey like a brother when we were at Eglin together. When I learned that he had given his life for his country it really hit me hard and ever since then I've prayed for his family each night and whenever I see a news report or something that makes me wonder how his family feels each time they get a reminder of what he went through and what other families who have lost sons, daughters, mothers, and fathers will face when they get that awful knock on the door.

Rich was so caring, funny, and sweet and the world suffered a major loss because he died so young. He touched so many lives in his short time here and I know that I'm a better person for having had him in my life.
Rich and I were at EOD School (Eglin AFB) together. I ended up in a wheelchair and I was in stuck in bed, in the CBQ for months before being granted convalescent leave. I don't know how I would have made it through those tough times without him and even now my memories of him bring me a lot of joy. Rich took care of me by being his goofy self and keeping my spirits up. He also made sure that I had everything I needed and was a kind and loyal friend. I had to wear leg braces and they were too big to fit under anything I had, so he gave me some of his sweatpants, I still wear a pair of them to remind me of all he was. When I was in pain, Rich would watch movies with me or just sit and talk - and it helped more than I can say. When I was sick of DFac food he would bring me dinner or a little treat to cheer me up.

I'll never forget him and I hope everyone will try to honor him by being a good friend, helping others, and keeping his memory alive.

We miss you Rich!

I didn't know your son, but I feel that I should thank him for his service and his sacrifice. I was born and raised in Dalton, Ohio and hearing of another soldier gone, brings me to tears. Your son is a hero to me and to all other service members. May the memories, laughs, smiles, tears and joys keep your heart filled with love for him. I hope that they bring you great comfort. May God continue to bless your family.

Rich was more than just a good friend, he was like a brother to me. We often went fishing together...he was also good at billiards. Above all, he was always there to help in any way possible. In the short time that I knew him, he was not only a dedicated solider, he was a true friend. I will continue to miss him, and I realize his sacrifice was honorable...for he was a true gentleman and a solider.

I was stationed with Ramey at Fort Knox when he was still fixing computers. I helped him change over to EOD because he hated fixing computers so much. My husband spent some time playing paintball with him and his buddies. We were devastated to hear of his death.

We remember and honor him.

Dear Family of Sgt. Ramey,

As I was looking at each photo, each name on this Fallen Heros list, your son stood out to me and I felt compelled to write. My maiden name is Ramey.

Reading about him, makes me realize he was a hero in the making. This is what he was and is still- a soldier. On earth he was a soldier and in Heaven, he is still. May God Bless your family.

Sincerely,

Sarah Ramey Gaddis

To the Ramey family,

I was in the Military during the Gulf war. War is a hard thing to deal with as you know. I was lucky enough to come home to my family. I wanted you to know the families who have lost loved ones in this horrible time of war are on my mind everyday and i'm sure on the minds of others also. I get up in the mornings and say thank-you for my freedom and my country and because of your brave family member who gave the ULTIMATE SACRAFICE HIS LIFE i can do this. Always remember that SSG.RICHARD P.RAMEY is always with you and your family as a Guardian Angle. Thre are two things that know one can take from you one is the wonderful memories you have and the other is being the proud parent or the proud family member of SSG. RICHARD P. RAMEY a soldier who gave the ULTIMATE SACRAFICE for all of us. Thank-you Sarg keep your family safe.

God Bless,

Rudy Jones
