William R. Strange Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jan. 28, 2005.
For Pfc. William Strange, being in the military was the first step toward success. "He told me, ''I was going down the wrong road; I''m going into the service,''" said Daniel McCoy, police chief of Adrian, Ga. Strange''s girlfriend, Teri Peebles, said he had a plan to serve in the military, go to college and eventually marry her. Strange, 19, of Adrian, was killed April 2 when an improvised explosive device detonated in Baghdad where he was setting up an observation point. Strange, who graduated from high school in Swainsboro, Ga., was based at Fort Hood, Texas. "You could have given him a million dollars and I don''t think that would have made him as happy as being in the military," said his sister, Tawanna Davis. Strange was an outgoing person who loved people and looked out for his family. "He would do crazy stuff just to make us laugh," Davis said. "He would make funny faces. He didn''t like seeing people sad.

Hello,

We apologize for being so late in expressing our deepest condolences to you and your family. We want you to know that we will be sending Care Packages to deployed troops this holiday season and several of these will be dedicated to your loved one. Each package will carry the name, photo, service branch, rank and hometown of William R. Strange US Army Private 1st Class.

We realize that this is a small tribute, but we do this with all respect and sincerity and we want you to know that it is made possible by thousands of like-minded individuals from across the American youth hockey community, their families, friends and others who support our mission.

We will not forget. May God Bless you and keep you safe and strong.

Sincerely,

My Brother, you have forever changed my life. The grief is a thorn in my side, but I embrace it. I thank God for strengthening me to keep your life at the forefront. I will honor your name, your life, and your death for as long as I have breath to breathe. We will never let your sacrifice be forgotten, many don't know, but I will tell them, you were an amazing young man from day one. I saw it as you grew and I'm grateful that I didn't pass up my chances to express that to you. I died with you, but God's grace and mercy have given me an opportunity of a lifetime. All the Glory belongs to God, it's one thing to know of God, but it is an entirely different experience to KNOW God. I'm very confident that I will be with you again, that's a promise Jesus whispered to me, but if only I take up my cross and trust in Him, and Bro you know that I have and I've never looked back. I love and miss you more with each new day, sleep easy.

I remember when William first came to our unit just before we deployed to Iraq. As the new, and youngest, guy in our unit we took him under our wing and showed him the ropes of military life. He had a big smile that if you saw it once you would never forget it. Nine years later, this month, I still think about how much better he could have made everyone around him. I always talk about him, he truly was a hero umong heros.

It is difficult to know what to say since I want to express my sincere sympathy to the family and friends of Pfc Strange. Please know that your loved one is not forgotten. I wish everyone impacted by this tragic loss strength and peace. I hope that Pfc Strange knew that there are people in America who respect his great courage in serving as a member of the US military. Although I did not know him, I know that he must have been a very special person to be willing to do something that most Americans will never have to experience, and for that we can never say thank you enough.
Thank you Pfc Strange!

The Wind on The Downs

“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”

(Written by Marian Allen during World War l )

Two lines that I wish you to keep near your heart…….

“You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe”

I did not know William, but he is my hero.

I have just learned of the death of PFC William R. Strange. As the State Chaplain of the Georgia Sons Of The American Revolution and speaking for our President, George Thurmond and more than 1,400 SAR members around the State of Georgia, may I most humbly express the condolences of a grateful Society. PFC Strange, wrapped in the integrity of service to our nation and the inestimable values of duty, honor and country, stood on a wall of freedom for us all. His life and his love of country epitomized every attribute of patriotism the Sons Of The American Revolution hold dear. And, as Americans, we could never repay the debt we owe him ..!! Nor the debt we owe you… his family!!!
