Michael W. Mitchell Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jan. 28, 2005.
Sgt. Michael W. Mitchell found love when the Army stationed him in Germany, and he planned to bring his German fiancee home after his stint as a tank mechanic ended. Instead, Bianca Liebl had to make plans to go to Porterville, Calif., on her own. Mitchell, 25, was one of eight soldiers killed in a fireifight April 4 in Baghdad, Iraq. In high school, Mitchell ran cross-country and wrestled. A coach, Rich Lambie, called Mitchell "a scrappy, tenacious competitor." Months after graduation, Mitchell enlisted in the Army. He was stationed in Germany, just as his father, Bill Mitchell, had been during the Vietnam War. An older sister, Christine Jayroe, remembered Mitchell as "my little playmate." "I used to drag him and play in the dirt," Jayroe said.

I too was in Iraq from 2004-2005, I am originally from Porterville California. I did not know SGT. Mitchell, fact is we never met. I was in B BTRY 1-7 FA 1st Infantry Division, Tikrit Iraq when the ambush in Sadr City occured. Being a former Soldier from Porterville and just watching the Long Road Home tonight is bringing back memories both good and bad. I am deeply saddened by any loss of any service member of any branch, however learning that a fellow soldier from my home town paid the ultimate price hurts deeper than one can even imagine. Although we never knew each other, SGT. Michael W Mitchell and I are and always will be Brothers in Arms and I want to send my deepest condolences to his family and friends and to all who knew him. I apologise for my comments coming so late (2018), 14 years after, but I just learned of this tonight watching the documentary. SGT. Mitchell will forever be honored and remembered when I attend meetings at the American Legion and Veterans of Foriegn Wars as I honor and mention all others I learn about. To SGT. Michael W Michell from Former SGT. Bobby L Waters U.S. ARMY Veteran, thank you for your service and sacrifice. Rest in peace Comrade, HOOAH!

Hello,
We realize that we are very late to express our deepest condolences, but we wanted to let your family and friends know that we will be sending Care Packages to deployed troops this week and we'll be dedicating several of these to your loved one. Each package will carry the name, photo and the hometown of Michael W. Mitchell US Army Sergeant. We realize that this is a small tribute, but we do this with all respect and sincerity and we want you to know that it is made possible by thousands of like-minded individuals from across the American youth hockey community. We will not forget. May God Bless you and keep you safe and strong.

Sincerely,

As the days, weeks and years pass... I try to take stock while looking back over years as to what really mattered and what things or events made a real difference in my life...
I also have reflected on how some people in my life, gone now, seemed to have lived their lives to the fullest in such a relatively short time! As a former athlete of mine, Mike came to mind as one of those young men who took on lifes challenges and made the most of them! It should be heart warming for his parents and family members to know that Mikes memory and accomplishments live on in others memories of him and what he demonstrated and stood for during a life that was tragically cut short! My continued prayers go out to his family and friends who miss him deeply but were lucky enough to have had him as part of their lives! Rest In Peace Mike and consider your short life well lived!

Sgt Mitchell was my soldier next in charge on my maintenance team in Iraq, was the type of soldier you coould always count on the get the mission accomplished. The one thing I will always remember about Mitchell was that he could run like a gazelle to be that short. Mitch there is not a day that I don't think about you, may God bless your family and wipe away the tears, because I know in my heart that you are up there safely in God's present

It is difficult to know what to say since I want to express my sincere sympathy to the family and friends of Sgt Mitchell. Please know that your loved one is not forgotten. I wish everyone impacted by this tragic loss strength and peace. I hope that Sgt Mitchell knew that there are people in America who respect his great courage in serving as a member of the US military. Although I did not know him, I know that he must have been a very special person to be willing to do something that most Americans will never have to experience, and for that we can never say thank you enough.
Thank you Sgt Mitchell!

The Wind on The Downs

“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”

(Written by Marian Allen during World War l )

Two lines that I wish you to keep near your heart…….

“You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe”

I did not know Michael, but he is my hero. If you would like

There is nothing that I can say or do to take away the pain or bring you peace in your time of sorrow, but I will offer your family my heart felt condolences. I also offer you my prayers that in time the pain will easy and the memories of your HERO will carry you through each day and night. I want to thank your HERO, for his/her selfless act of becoming a member of the armed forces, his/her willingness to defend the United States of America, all that we hold sacred and for the sacrifice that will forever be etched in the memories of all those who knew him/her. Though tears can never bring him/her back, we hope that our tears express our gratitude for the sacrifice that he/she made and our sorrow at his/her passing. I believe for every fallen HERO there is a star shining brightly up above to remind us of the precious gift we were given.

Your mission on earth is complete and you are now a member of GOD’s Heavenly armed forces. Stand down brave warrior and take your rightful place in Heaven with all the HEROES who have passed before.

I made a special promise to LE RON A. WILSON (KIA on 07/06/07) on the day he was laid to rest as I touched his coffin, that I would never forget him nor would I forget those that gave their lives for our country before him, with him and after him and so when I came across www.legacy.com, I thought what a great way to keep my promise to Le Ron, so I will continue to leave tributes in each guest book until the day there is no longer the need to leave these tributes to a FALLEN HERO.

REST IN PEACE, HERO, YOU WILL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN!!
