Joshua M Palmer Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jan. 28, 2005.
1st Lt. Joshua M. Palmer sent an e-mail home asking for candy _ not for himself but for Iraqi children. "He said he liked to see them happy, and they loved the Americans," said his mother, Jackie Palmer. Palmer, 25, of Banning, Calif., died April 8 in a hostile attack. Palmer enlisted in the Marines reserves when he was 17 and worked three summers at his mother's restaurant, The Farmhouse. He earned a bachelor's degree in history from the University of San Diego and graduated last year from officer training at Quantico, Va. He had told his mother that he'd be home by summer, but she recently learned he was trying to extend his stay. "He wasn't going to leave until it was cleaned up," she said.

Memorial Day 2019 is fast approaching and I just realized that I missed posting here on the 15th anniversary of Josh's sacrificial passing on April 8, 2004, old age is setting in and taking its' toll on my memory. along with some health issues that clouds my mind. Years ago I ran across this most precious "read" written by the wife of a fellow Marine who went through "The Basic School" at Quantico with Josh. I now post part of what she had to say because it expresses better than what I could ever say at this point in time, her words:

"This Memorial Day weekend, I will contemplate all that was lost when Josh was killed by an insurgent bullet. Our country and our world lost a great man who could have become a great husband, a great father, a great statesman.
But I will also appreciate all that was gained when Josh offered his life for his country. Our freedom, our way of life, goodness itself could only exist when those who have so much to offer in times of peace are willing to sacrifice all when peace is threatened."

14 years, and you're forever 25 years of age, while Alex turned 39 on the day we lost the physical you. We speak of you so often, and you're in our hearts every day, and will be until we meet again. Your life set an example for all of us to strive to emulate. Your Christmas here with us is so easily recalled. Know that you were, and still are, loved deeply.

14 years have now passed and this day still and will ALWAYS be a day of special remembrance of Josh, an honorable, noble and heroically brave man. Man, can this country use more of your kind of quality. May God's grace be of comfort to the Palmer family and friends in his absence.

Hey Joshua,

I miss you everyday brother. Thinking of our kids getting together. 4 wheeling in the desert. They say time makes everything better, but it doesn't. We used to run around the desert like wild animals. Having a good time. I'm sure there was an occasional fight, but what does family do. Lol. Anyways man. I appriciate everything you did. I look forward to hanging out again.

April 8th, 2017, it's now been 13 years since Josh's departure from this world. The memory of him still abides with me, especially on certain occasions such as memorial day, veterans day, when I hear the name Josh, etc. A picture of him in uniform is still my computer's desktop background. As I survey the world around us today, I'm reminded more than ever of his noble character; Josh was truly one special man.

It's been a decade, hard to believe. Josh's picture remains the focal point on our computer screen's wallpaper. I also have it as my avatar on a website forum where I do posting. It's not that I need a visual reminder for remembrance's sake, it's my way of honoring him for the great man that he was and for the inspiration he is for those who know the man and his sacrificial story. Sill remembering Josh though the years, and as long as I am of sound mind and have the physical ability to write, will continue to do so.

Now it's been 9 years, oh where has the time gone. As the time passes and events tend to fade into the background, still it would be remiss not to remember the person of 1st Lt. Joshua M. Palmer,USMC. Many things are going on in my family's and my life right now to the point I let this past April 8, 2013 slip by me. That doesn't mean I don't think of Josh from time to time; his picture is still the focal point on my "wallpaper" on my computer. It will remain there as a reminder and a dedication.

It's been 7 years now; seems like an eternity at times, then only a yesterday at other times. As I look around the world and its' happenings, I yearn for those not with us any longer who are much needed to help lead us onto a higher road; Josh always come to mind when such thoughts arise. It is said that "time heals all wounds"; if longings are a wound, then mine are yet to be healed. YOU are truly missed Josh Palmer.

Five years(April 8, 2004) and I still tears-up at times thinking of you and all the noble qualities your life encompassed. One of those quality was your ability to inspire and bring out the best in those whom you got to know; I think you felt anything less than 100% was depriving one's self of their full potential. You were truly born to be a leader. A picture of you in your dress uniform has been my computer desktop wallpaper for going on 4 years; it's my way of honoring you.

It is difficult to know what to say since I want to express my sympathy to the family and friends of 1st Lt Palmer. Please know that your loved one is not forgotten. I wish everyone impacted by this tragic loss strength and peace. I hope that 1st Lt Palmer knew that there are people in America who respect his great courage in serving as a member of the US military. Although I did not know him, I know that he must have been a very special person to be willing to do something that most Americans will never have to experience, and for that we can never say thank you enough.
Thank you 1st Lt Palmer!

It has now been 4 years since your departure from this world and still, my thoughts and feelings toward you have not wained, nor shall they ever. The first time I met you was a defining point in my life because I saw all the good and noble qualities that you embodied. In this world there's a need for the higher road that few take; your life serves as an example. You are truly one in a million. May God's grace comfort all those close to you; and let us not forget that we can cry with hope because as believers we will someday be face to face again, God promised us that.

The Wind on The Downs

“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”

(Written by Marian Allen during World War l )

Two lines that I wish you to keep near your heart…….

“You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe”

Father we entrust our brother Joshua to your mercy. You loved him greatly in this life: now that he is freed from all its cares, give him happiness and peace forever. Welcome him now into paradise where there will be no more sorrow, no more weeping or pain, but only peace and joy with Jesus your Son, and the Holy Spirit forever and ever.
May God hold Joshua in the palm of His hand. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. My deepest sympathy.

If this person can stand in battle to ensure my freedom, then I will stand in grief with his/her family to honor him/her. For every fallen HERO there is a bright star that shines in the evening sky to remind us of the cherished gift we were given – even if for too short a time.
My heart breaks again as I sign yet another guest book of another courageous young soldier who gave their life so selflessly. I wish I never found myself in a position to have to sign another guestbook for the rest of my life, but I promised Le Ron A. Wilson (a dear friend KIA 7/6/07, 18yrs old) that neither he nor any like him would be forgotten and so I will continue until the day there is no longer the need.

Joshua,
You are one of the best human beings we have ever known. Your sweet mom, Jackie, told me that one of her greatest concerns was that you will be forgotten with the passing of time. I think not. Anyone who has ever known you will never forget the young man with the wonderful heart, the strong will to do the right thing, the playfulness and happy grin, the sharp inquisitive mind, the unusual patriotic bend of one so young, and the happiness people felt while in your company. We thank you, and God, for watching over our Marine son, your forever friend Alex, while he served in Iraq these past 9 months. He is safely on USA soil once again. You are a forever kind of guy, Joshua. We miss and love you, daily are reminded of you, and want to assure your mom and Gramma that we plan to be in your happy company again someday. Do they play "Hearts" in Heaven, too?? Dave and Ellen Hedman (Jaffrey, NH)

Our Marine son and Josh were best friends at USD and at Quantico, hiking, mt. biking, and Jeeping around the country together. Alex brought him home for Christmas, 2002, where we grew to know and love this very special young man. He was playful and fun, helpful, appreciative, very knowledgeable about most anything that came up, dedicated to his country and its ideals, played joyfully in the snow and on the ice with us (mostly new to a southern Californian!), and when they left for Quantico in early January 2003, it would be the last time we would see him, except for a brief hello in April in Quantico. He was very focused and training hard for his military job. Sadly, Josh was killed on our son's 25th birthday. When we discussed that we wanted Josh to be Alex's personal Guardian Angel, Alex said that might not be a good idea, since it was often Josh who led the two of them into the hairiest situations! But we dismissed that, and truly believe that with Josh and God watching over our Marine son as he now serves in Iraq, he is truly in good hands. Joshua is unforgettable. Love from Ellen and Dave Hedman

Today is April 8 2006 two years since Josh passed on. I did not know him but I wear a bracelet bearing his name and the date he died. I have read the messages of those who did know him and feel I have come to know him through their words. I am honored to wear this rememberance of him and I think often of his dear life. God bless you forever Josh.

I first met Lt.Palmer at the Quantico Marine Base during Warrior Day in 2003. Our daughter at that time had established a close relationship with Josh while both were in officer training at Quantico. I made a unwise choice during one of the Warrior Day events and broke my right foot while atempting to make a jump off of a 10ft wall on the obstacle course. Josh was the first to come to my aid. He ran quite a far distant in order to procure me a set of crutches; his concern for my well-being during the rest of my time there never diminished. It appeared to me then, and even more so now, that here was a man who was not only strong in his convictions but also he is a man with the gift of the giving of himself for the sake of helping those in need. If I live to be 100 yrs old, I will NEVER forget this hero. No matter what the outcome of this war turns out to be, his life and sacrifice will not be in vain because of the lives he has forever touched; his example has encouraged me to be a better man.
