Michelle M. Witmer Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jan. 28, 2005.
When Michelle M. Witmer was 10 years old, she told her two sisters she wanted to be a hero. "Seriously, I could push someone off a bridge and save them," the little girl told her identical twin Charity and older sister Rachel as they talked about what they wanted to be when they grew up. All three sisters have served in Iraq with the National Guard. Spc. Michelle Witmer, 20, of New Berlin, Wis., died April 9 when her Humvee was attacked in Baghdad. In e-mails home, she said she was working night shifts and rarely got a day off but said she enjoyed volunteering at an orphanage. "It was when I was holding one of these children that I realized I have so much to be thankful for," she wrote. Witmer was trying to return fire when she was hit, said Brig. Gen. Kerry Denson, commander of the Wisconsin National Guard, quoting an e-mail from Sgt. Nate Olson, who was in the Humvee with Witmer. Charity said her twin got her childhood wish. "She was a hero when she died," she said.

To the family of Michelle Witmer,
My name is Cecily Benton. I am a high school senior at Winfield City High School in Win Winfield, Alabama. I am so sorry for your loss. It seems like Michelle was a wonderful person. I am sure she is dearly missed.
I am writing to you today because, my history teacher, Coach Wilson, thought it would be a good idea to write to the family of a fallen soldier. I chose Michelle because, my mother's name is Michelle.
I have a lot of respect for the people that go out and fight for our country knowing that there is a possibility that they may never return.
I am 17 years old and, I love singing and spending time with my family.
If you would like to reply, please email me at [email protected]

To the Witmer Family: Although I was in uniform at Michelle's funeral, this message is long overdue. I retired as the WING J1 (HR Dir) at the end of 2004. I often think of the sacrifice Michelle made and your entire family endures. I want you to know that she will not be forgotten, even by those who never had an opportunity to meet her in person. I went to work at the Pentagon as a civilian from 2008-2010. I took every opportunity to say hello to Michelle's picture that was posted along the "A" Ring on one of the corridors there. She was so easy for me to identify among all those who had fallen defending their country, her eyes were so bright. Her picture was there for the entire three years I was at HQ, Dept of Army. Thank you for her service and your sacrifices.

Hello,
We would like to express our deepest condolences and to also let the Witmer Family know that we recently sent Care Packages to American troops in the war zones. Each box carried a dedication sheet that includes the name, service information and a photo of your loved one. We recognize that this is a humble tribute, but we wanted you to know that it is heartfelt and made possible by thousands of like-minded individuals in the youth hockey community and beyond. We will not forget. May God Bless you and keep you strong.
Sincerely,

To the family of Spc. Michelle M. Witmer:
The Fort Snelling Memorial Chapel Foundation will be honoring your loved one at the non-denominational Christian Memorial Day Remembrance worship service at 11:00 a.m. on Sunday, 26 May 2013. We will remember the casualties of the Global War on Terrorism from Minnesota … and the bordering states of Iowa, North Dakota, South Dakota and Wisconsin. Outside of the historic Fort Snelling Veterans Memorial Chapel will be a “Memorial Garden” filled with some 300 white crosses bearing the names of the war dead … including your loved one.

The Memorial Garden will be encircled with larger white crosses representing all of the wars of our nation's history and give honor to all who have served in the United States Armed Forces and made the ultimate sacrifice for the freedoms we enjoy today. Wreaths will be placed at the foot of each 8-foot cross bearing the number of U.S. Service Members killed in each of America's conflicts.

I would like to extend to your family an invitation to honor us with your presence at worship as we pay tribute to the sacrifice made by your service member and family. Our pastor, Kenneth L. Beale, Jr., will preach a message entitled, “Freedom:Free, but Costly.” At the conclusion of the worship hour, all of the congregation will be invited to silently pay their respects at the garden and there place poppies at each of the crosses. A Memorial Rifle Squad of the Fort Snelling National Cemetery will fire vollies as the US flag is lowered to half-staff and Taps is played. Following your visit to the Memorial Garden, your family is invited to attend an informal reception (weather permitting) outside of the Chapel. The Memorial Garden will remain until 5:00 p.m. on Monday, 27 May (Memorial Day).

As this Christian worship service has traditionally been well attended, we would be happy to reserve seating for you and yours. To do so, kindly call (651/286-7296) and leave a voice message indicating your veterans' name and the number of persons attending. For more information about the Foundation or driving directions to the historic chapel at Fort Snelling, visit our website at: www.fortsnellingmcf.org Special rates for nearby hotels will be available. For more information call (651/286-7296) or email the office ([email protected]) and leave your name and contact information.

Also, beginning at dusk (8:30 p.m.) on Saturday 25 May through dawn (6:30 a.m.) on Sunday, 26 May, a “Prayer Vigil for Peace” will be held in the sanctuary of the Chapel. You are invited to stop by, light a candle and place it at the foot of your loved one's cross in the Memorial Garden … and then enter the Chapel for prayer.

If you are not able to attend, we pray that you would find comfort in knowing that our prayers are with you and all of the fallen heroes.

Respectfully,

To the family of beautiful Michelle Witmer. It has taken me far too long to express my deep sadness at Michelle's death. When the news appeared, I could only break down and say, 'no, not her. Not any of these special, brave, lovely young women from this exceptional family.'

As a Wisconsinite, having crossed Michelle's Memorial Blvd. numerous times, I think of her often, and pray the ensuing years have offered a bit of healing, even a moment or two, of some respite from the burden of such immense loss.

Writing from related experience, however, realize healing and peace can be very elusive. And knowing why Michelle died, why she was in Iraq, it is so personal -- Andrea Haberman, my niece, was killed on 9/11/01 in the North Tower of the World Trade Center. Andrea grew up in West Bend. She was 25.

It remains an open wound, that day, and all the days that have followed, and the terrible, final price that has been paid by so, so many since. How we wish none of it were so...

So all I am left to offer is gratitude for Michelle's willingness to serve, her many selfless sacrifices, and for those of your entire family.
Sincerely,
Shelley Haberman Casey

To the Witmer Family,

I dedcided to work out of my home-office today. I came across your daughters' story on the internet. I do remember seeing this beautiful picture of Michelle with her Mom and Sisters and reading the article and I started to cry. I didn't know Michelle or her family, but I was overcome with emotion. Today, It's the same. Michelle was an extrodinary woman who had family values and recognized how fortunate she was-she had her calling and unfortunately she paid the ultimate price. I want you to know that people out there still care, even after the tragedy. I will pray for your family. I hope you and your loved ones are doing well and that each day, each week and each year becomes more bearable. The emptiness will never go away and your love for Michelle will always continue. She knows that. As I'm sure she's looking down on all of you and hoping each and everyone of your days is filled with happiness. I just wanted you to know that I'm sorry for your loss.

Holding you all in my thoughts and prayers today.

The Wind on The Downs

“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”

(Written by Marian Allen during World War l )

Two lines that I wish you to keep near your heart…….

That you are round about me, I believe”

The first time I ever met Michelle, and your family. I was with the American Dojo in Waukesha on Perkins ave. I wish I could have gotten to now her and your family a lot better than I have. But I was kind of distant myself from losing my Grandpa and my dad. I have not forgotten them days of seeing you all together, and full of smiles. When ever Memorial Day comes and goes, I think about Michelle and what she has gone through and your family too. It's nice to see all of you are moving on in your life, and keeping Michelle alive in your memories. I do miss seeing her around, and your family being all together. My family is the same way too. All the holidays are never the same and family events too. I try to get to every Memorial Day event I can. When I do, I think about Michelle and your family. If you would like to keep in touch, it would be nice to hear from all of you again. I have not talked to you all since Michelle's funeral.

To the family and friends

I have only just begun this journey and may not have known your loved one personally.

I extend to you my deepest condolences. No words will ever express the grief those close to this lost treasure are feeling. I can only say that I can share this grief as I too lost a loved one July 8, 2006. I will continue to pray for the safety of our soldiers and especially the family and friends of our lost hero’s. I only hope the memories will carry us through. I will continue pray that you also will believe and know that our heavenly father will not give us more than we can handle.

As always I read (and cry) through the memorials of our lost hero’s, So many people have already expressed the things I would also say. I am amazed and take comfort that so many people care. I can only thank you for the sacrifice you and especially Michelle have made to protect our country. As others have said “I am only an email away.” I would be honored if you so choose to share about this fine hero.

Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Matthew 11:28

To the family of Spc. Michelle M. Witmer:

The Fort Snelling Memorial Chapel Foundation will be honoring your loved one at the non-denominational Memorial Day Sunday worship service at 11:00 a.m. on 28 May, 2006. We will remember the casualties of the Global War on Terrorism from Minnesota … and the neighboring states of Iowa, North Dakota, South Dakota and Wisconsin. Outside of the historic Fort Snelling Veterans Memorial Chapel will be a “Memorial Garden” filled with white crosses bearing the names of the war dead … including your loved one.

I would like to extend to your family an invitation to honor us with your presence at worship as we pay tribute to the sacrifice made by your service member and family. Our pastor, U.S. Army Chaplain, LTC Kenneth L. Beale, Jr. will preach a message entitled “What Are We to Remember?” At the conclusion of the worship hour, all of the congregation will be invited to silently pay their respects at the garden and place poppies at each of the crosses. An honor guard squad will be on hand to fire vollies as the US flag is lowered to half-staff and Taps is played.

As this Christian worship service has traditionally been well attended, we would be happy to reserve seating for you and yours. To do so, kindly call (612/970-7866) and leave a voice message indicating your veterans’ name and the number of persons attending. If you are not able to attend, we pray that you would find comfort in knowing that our prayers are with you and all of the fallen heroes.

Respectfully,

Leila Campbell

I am so grateful for the Witmer sisters. My husband was over there in the same company as all 3 of them. Michelle will always be a hero in our eyes.

While I was celebrating Independence Day over the weekend, I recalled how Michelle gave her life so that others a world away might one day enjoy the same type of celebration; free of tyranny and terror. Thank you Michelle.

To the Witmer family, please accept my humble thoughts offered this Memorial Day, 2005 for your beautiful daughter, sister, loved one's death. My beautiful niece Andrea was killed on Sept. 11, 2001, so these kinds of reflections and questions and memories are, sadly, now second-nature. I recently drove west on National Avenue for the first time in a very long time, and crossed 'Michelle Witmer Memorial Drive.' Not expecting it, it took my breath away. I personally will never forget Michelle or your entire family.
