Today we remember and honor Brian. We all lost him today in 2004. This has always weighed heavy on my heart and life because I was Brians' commander and he was executing my orders. He was a true quiet professional, an outstanding solider, and he is missed. Rest In Peace my brother. Your duty here is done.

To the family of Sgt. Brian M. Wood:
Please know that just as your loved one remains in your hearts and minds; his sacrifice, and that of your family, remains with the people he died defending. Words cannot express the gratitude we feel for his bravery and selflessness, or the heartache we feel for your loss. God bless and keep you always.

I want to tell you a story. There was a young soldier in Iraq working the trauma bed 3 at the 67th CSH, Combat Support Hospital, in Tikrit Iraq. On a slow day in April a thunderous roar of HUMVWEE engines overwhelmed the ambient sounds of the ER. In came four wounded soldiers. Trauma bed 3 was occupied by a young soldier by the name of Brian Wood. The soldier manning the station at trauma bed 3, at the direction of the attending physician performed CPR on SGT Wood for 45 minutes. In the mean time a chest tube had been inserted along with numerous other medical devices. At approximately 1513 SGT Wood was pronounced. At that moment SGT Wood's platoon leader entered the ER and yelled out "Brian." The attending soldier looked down at the bed and saw himself lying there, breathless, lifeless and yet peaceful and serene. When SGT Wood originally entered the room he asked the attending soldier, "Tell my parents hi for me." I looked into his deep blue eyes and assured him he would make it and he could tell them himself. I've carried this with me since April of that year. SGT Wood gave the ultimate for his country and his fellow soldier. His fellow soldier let him down in his dying wish and that I regret. To his family I am sorry. To his friends I am sorry. To our fellow soldiers I am sorry. This is my feeble attempt to let go of this and move on. Brian I am sorry. I hope your family receives this and gains some closure. Live in peace brother. I'll see you every night when I close my eyes to rest.

It is very difficult to know what to say since I want to express my sincere sympathy to the family and friends of Sgt Wood. Please know that your loved one is not forgotten. I wish everyone impacted by this tragic loss strength and peace. I hope that Sgt Wood knew that there are people in America who respect his great courage in serving as a member of the US military. Although I did not know him, I know that he must have been a very special person to be willing to do something that most Americans will never have to experience, and for that we can never say thank you enough.
Thank you Sgt Wood!

Remember
Remember me when I am gone away,
Gone far away into the silent land;
When you can no more hold me by the hand,
Nor I half turn to go yet turning stay.
Remember me when no more day by day
You tell me of our future that you plann'd:
Only remember me; you understand
It will be late to counsel then or pray.
Yet if you should forget me for a while
And afterwards remember, do not grieve:
For if the darkness and corruption leave
A vestige of the thoughts that once I had,
Better by far you should forget and smile
Than that you should remember and be sad.

Holding you all in my thoughts and prayers today.
The Wind on The Downs
“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”
(Written by Marian Allen during World War l )
Two lines that I wish you to keep near your heart…….
“You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe”
Please contact me and I will email you back a copy of an
Angel and soldier drawing.
I did not know Brian, but I am remembering on
this day he gave his all.
He is my hero.

I didn't personally know you or your family, but saw this terrible news online and felt compelled to say something! - Thank you for your service to our country and keeping me and my family safe, secure and free - You paid the ultimate price for my freedom with your life and I am forever grateful - A simple thank you seems so little at a time like this - I pray for the family and friends you left behind and hope that they can somehow find peace at this very difficult time - God Bless you and all who knew you
