Michael J. Pernaselli Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jan. 28, 2005.
Although they hadn''t seen each other for almost three years, Michael Pernaselli, a Navy petty officer, and his elder brother, John, an Army captain, never passed up a chance to rib each other about their military career choices. "It was a big joke between the two of them as to who was the better, the Navy or the Army," said their father, John, his voice wavering with emotion. Michael Pernaselli, 27, was one of three Navy and Coast Guard servicemen killed April 24 in a waterborne suicide attack on an Iraqi oil terminal. Pernaselli grew up in Brighton, N.Y., and joined the military after high school. He had previously toured the Persian Gulf and Kosovo and, in January, was sent back to the Gulf to serve on the USS Firebolt. He once excelled at splatball and was a devoted pro wrestling fan: "That was kind of like his release," his father said with a laugh. Pernaselli, who was divorced, had custody of his daughters, ages 3 and 4, who are living with their grandparents. When he called home a few days before his death, "he just wanted to talk to his two girls and see how they''re doing," his father said.

I find myself thinking about you today and how I truly miss you Michael. You were a big part of our lives. I get angry every time I think about how we lost you at a tender age. I have so much to tell you if I could. I still remember the last time I heard your voice it was 2 am on Saturday morning April 24, 2004. I remember that morning very well. You were excited with a little nervousness to your voice. You said that you had a dream and that is something that you never did. You wanted to know about the weather and how you could not wait to ride your motorcycle like we use to through the open fields.

To the family of Petty Officer 1st Class Michael J. Pernaselli:
Please know that just as your loved one remains in your hearts and minds; his sacrifice, and that of your family, remains with the people he died defending. Words cannot express the gratitude we feel for his bravery and selflessness, or the heartache we feel for your loss. God bless and keep you always.

Petty Officer Pernaselli's death hit very close to home as I was part of his Navy paul bearer detail during his funeral. As sad as we all were to lose a local service member and a fellow sailor, we were also very honored to take part and show our respects to this fine young man. The hardest part of the entire day was looking at his young daughters and knowing the loss they would feel. A father of two daughters myself, it truly made me cherish the time I have with my own. Fair winds and following seas Michael. Rest assured there is a special place in Heaven for those that defend our freedoms.

I know there are no words to say, except how sorry I am for your loss. May you hold Michaels' memory in your heart and please remember he shall never be forgotten.

...For you every single soldier
Those who served so honorable
Your life was forever altered
While I’m home safe and free
I stand with grateful admiration
I stand respectful and so proud
I know I’m only a civilian
And I don’t even know if it’s allowed.

But I salute you; allow me the honor
to salute you with permission let me say
Even though I hold no rank know that from my heart
My humble gratitude comes from the deepest part.
I salute you.

It is difficult to know what to say since I want to express my sincere sympathy to the family and friends of Petty Officer 1st Class Pernaselli. Please know that your loved one is not forgotten. I wish everyone impacted by this tragic loss strength and peace. I hope that Petty Officer 1st Class Pernaselli knew that there are people in America who respect his great courage in serving as a member of the US military. Although I did not know him, I know that he must have been a very special person to be willing to do something that most Americans will never have to experience, and for that we can never say thank you enough.
Thank you Petty Officer 1st Class Pernaselli!

Holding you all in my thoughts and prayers today.

The Wind on The Downs

“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”

(Written by Marian Allen during World War l )

Two lines that I wish you to keep near your heart…….

“You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe”

I did not know Michael, but I am remembering on
this day he gave his all.
He is my hero.

The Other Side

i'm over on the other side
where life and death softly divide.
left my skin and bones behind
now i'm over on the other side.

can you feel me there with you?
my breath is gone but i'm not through.
loved you then and i still do
from over on the other side.

i can fly. really fly.
below the earth ... all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

it's good here on the other side.
the sweetest songs...the bluest skies.
thank you for the tears you cried
but it's good here on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth...all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side

the world is smaller than a needle's eye.
where life and death softly divide.
when you leave your skin and bones behind
i'll be waiting on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth ... all through the sky.
go tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

Dear Pernaselli Family,

I realize there is NOTHING that could be said to you that could ever ease the loss that your family has endured... I wouldn't even begin to try.

I simply felt the need to convey my deepest, heart felt condolences, to those that lived nearest me...

I SIMPLY HAD TO reach out to those that lived closest to me and let their families know that the sacrifice that their SONS & DAUGHTERS have made ARE NOT, and WILL NOT be forgotten, and were not made in vain!

We gladly add your beloved son to our prayers, along with ALL of our other fallen Sons & Daughters!

God Bless YOU and YOUR FAMILY, and "MAY THE PEACE OF THE LORD BE WITH YOU!"

To All Parents
“I’ll lend you for a little time a child of Mine,” He said.
“For you to love the While he lives and mourn for when he’s dead.
It may be six or seven years, or 22 or three,
But will you, till I call him back, take care of him for me?
He’ll bring his charms to gladden you, and shall his stay be brief.
You’ll have his lovely memories as solace and relief.
“I cannot promise he will stay, since all from earth return,
But there are some lessons taught down there I want this child to learn.
I’ve looked the wide world over in my search for teachers true
And from the throngs that crowd life’s lanes I have selected you.
Now will you give him all your love, nor think the labor vain,
Nor hate Me when I come to take him back again?”
For all the joy Thy child shall bring, the risk of grief we’ll run.
We’ll shelter him with tenderness, we’ll love him while we may
And for the happiness we’ve known forever grateful stay;
But shall the angels call for him much sooner than we’ve planned.
We’ll brave the bitter grief that comes and try to understand.”
