James E. Marshall Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jan. 28, 2005.
Though he was a world away, Spc. James Edward Marshall remembered to send a dozen pink roses to his mom for Mother''s Day. He even called to make sure they arrived. Hours later, Pam Marshall learned that her son had died. The 19-year-old from Tulsa, Okla., was killed May 5 along with another soldier when their Humvee hit an improvised explosive device in Baghdad. He had been in Iraq for less than two months. As a child in a community karate program, Marshall was determined to be the best. "He was a young man who didn''t know how to quit," said his teacher, police Officer Marvin Blades. Marshall, stationed at Fort Hood, Texas, joined the Army shortly after graduating from high school in 2002. His godfather, the Rev. M.C. Potter, spoke at his funeral. "God only gives us an allotment of time, and it''s up to us to make it mean something," Potter said. "James certainly did that."

The flag is flying in the sky
A daily reminder of who and why
We sit here remembering them today
These heroes that now lie in their grave.

While here on earth, the bravest ones
A soldier, a mother, a daughter, a son
The father's who went far off to war
To ensure our safety and so much more

To keep our children happy and free,
Someone must do this job, you see
So, today remember the soldiers who served,
Because this is one thing they truly deserve.

The loved one's that they have left behind,
The Gold Star mothers, like your and mine
We honor them proudly, every day
Our American Soldier...Proud and Brave
By Shannon Williams-Austill

I want to thank this soldier for their sacrifice.
And, I wish to extend my deepest regards to the loved ones they have left behind. Their service to our nation, has not gone unnoticed. They are our heroes, who paid the ultimate price for us, and that is something that every American needs to be reminded of and remember everyday.
The freedom we all have, we have because of brave young men and women who made a choice to defend and serve.
Today, let me remember your loved one with you.

To the family of SPC Marshall, I served in Iraq with your Soldier and he was and is a blessing. I met him in the church where he was always smiling...didn't say much but we were always able to understand the point he was trying to convey. He played the drums as the choir sang and to this day I can hear his music in my heart.

With the passing of yet another Memorial Day weekend, I'm humbly reminded that our family is not the only Gold Star family in Oklahoma. I've set aside time today to reflect on the past and remember that your family has suffered the loss of their soldier. Thank you for this soldier's service and duty. As he will always be dearly missed because he payed the ultimate sacrifice. He gave his life to protect our country and our freedom.

God bless this special soldier and his grieving loved ones. Be by their side in their time of need.

My son was with James when he passed. I want his mother to know that my son stayed with him to the end & wrote to me that he had prepared him for Heaven. I think of James & his mother often and hope some day to meet her. I will have James in my prayers every Memorial Day for the rest of my life.

It is difficult to know what to say since I want to express my sincere sympathy to the family and friends of Spc Marshall. Please know that your loved one is not forgotten. I wish everyone impacted by this tragic loss strength and peace. I hope that Spc Marshall knew that there are people in America who respect his great courage in serving as a member of the US military. Although I did not know him, I know that he must have been a very special person to be willing to do something that most Americans will never have to experience, and for that we can never say thank you enough.
Thank you Spc Marshall!

In Memory of James ~ ( Debra Estep )

Holding you all in my thoughts and prayers.

The Wind on The Downs

“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”

(Written by Marian Allen during World War l )

Two lines that I wish you to keep near your heart…….

“You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe”

I did not know James, but I am remembering
his service. He is my hero. !

The Other Side

i'm over on the other side
where life and death softly divide.
left my skin and bones behind
now i'm over on the other side.

can you feel me there with you?
my breath is gone but i'm not through.
loved you then and i still do
from over on the other side.

i can fly. really fly.
below the earth ... all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

it's good here on the other side.
the sweetest songs...the bluest skies.
thank you for the tears you cried
but it's good here on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth...all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side

the world is smaller than a needle's eye.
where life and death softly divide.
when you leave your skin and bones behind
i'll be waiting on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth ... all through the sky.
go tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say...
but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.
I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
Here, there's no more tears of sadness; here is just eternal love.

Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I'm with you every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,
God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."

It's good to have you back again; you were missed while you were gone.
As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on.
I need you here badly; you're part of my plan.
There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man."

God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.
And when you lie in bed at night, the day's chores put to flight.
God and I are closest to you....in the middle of the night.

When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years
because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.
But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.

I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
But if I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.
But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.

There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.
It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too...
that as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.

If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain,
then you can say to God at night......"My day was not in vain."
And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile,
knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile.

So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low,
just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.
When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.

And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.

I was in James Marshall's Basic training unit in Ft. Sill, OK. He was a special person. He was the kind of person that always made you feel better no matter what the problem was. He always had a positive outlook on everything. When I heard of his death, I was also deployed to Iraq, it ripped me apart. He will be missed.

Rest in peace SPC. Marshall, we will meet again when that big formation is called in heaven.

James, it has been over a year since you were taken from your church family that loved and raised you. My family was so devastated when we got the news. You gave your mom so much joy and she was very proud of you. At your homegoing services was the first time that I have ever seen our pastor be overcome with grieve. You meant so much to him.

Being in the choir with your mom (Pam) has given me a chance to know her better and she also keeps up with my daughter (which I appreciate). She has such a wonderful sense of humor. Her faith has seen her through all of this. We know that you are in a heavenly place and still watching over her. May you rest in peace.

Hi James! I know you are doing well, because you are sitting at the right hand side of our father (GOD). It is difficult to make sense out of the loss of a love one. I have concluded that GOD needed another ANGEL so he chosed you. I never had the pleasure, opportunity nor honor of knowing you. But, after reading the previous tributes, I know that you are a special person and are loved by so many people. I just wanted to add a few words as a tribute to you JAMES. Peace & Much Love.

Hey buddy! You were my best friend and also my blood. We were raised together and it is hard to believe that you have been gone for a year now. It has been hard but things are okay down here on earth. I know you are looking down on your mom and grammy from Heaven and I am taking care of them down here until we all meet again. I love you James "pappa smurf" and I miss you dearly. Take care of my mansion up there until I get there!!

On behalf of the Marshall Family, I want to thank everyone that comes to sign this guest book. James was a loving young man and our family misses him dearly.
