James W. Harlan Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jan. 28, 2005.
James W. Harlan coached youth baseball and loved sports. Most of all, he felt compelled to serve his country, his family said. The 44-year-old, an employee for the streets department for the city of Owensboro, Ky., spent two decades in the military and reserves. He re-enlisted after the 2001 terrorist attacks. "There''s just so much about Jimmy. There''s not just one thing you can say," said his brother, Kenny Likens. Staff Sgt. Harlan died May 14 in a suicide bomber attack in Iraq. He had been stationed at Cadiz, Ohio. His oldest son, James Bryan Harlan, said his father loved the military. "Nobody wants to see their father die at all," the 23-year-old Harlan said. "But to have it be while doing something of this significance, we''re proud of him." The tour was James Harlan''s second since the invasion of Iraq, said his sister-in-law, Kelly Likens. Survivors include five children, ranging from 11 to 26 years old.

To the family of Sgt. James W. Harlan:
Please know that just as your loved one remains in your hearts and minds; his sacrifice, and that of your family, remains with the people he died defending. Words cannot express the gratitude we feel for his bravery and selflessness, or the heartache we feel for your loss. God bless and keep you always.

I served in 660th TC with SGT. Harlan and although I didn't get to know him well, I want him to know his sacrifice will never be forgotten. Just wanted to let his family know that he is still thought of not only on Memorial weekend but year round. Gone but NEVER FORGOTTEN. Rest in peace my brother.

I want to thank everyone for their extremely kind words. I just recently learned of this website and found this page dedicated to my father. It is good to know that these service personel are remembered by more than just their own family and friends.

Thank you again,
James B. Harlan

It is difficult to know what to say since I want to express my sincere sympathy to the family and friends of Sgt Harlan. Please know that your loved one is not forgotten. I wish everyone impacted by this tragic loss strength and peace. I hope that Sgt Harlan knew that there are people in America who respect his great courage in serving as a member of the US military. Although I did not know him, I know that he must have been a very special person to be willing to do something that most Americans will never experience, and for that we can never say thank you enough.
Thank you Sgt Harlan!

In Memory of James ~ (Debra Estep)

Holding you all in my thoughts and prayers.

The Wind on The Downs

“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”

(Written by Marian Allen during World War l )

Two lines that I wish you to keep near your heart…….

“You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe”

I did not know James, but I am remembering
his service. He is my hero. !

The Other Side

i'm over on the other side
where life and death softly divide.
left my skin and bones behind
now i'm over on the other side.

can you feel me there with you?
my breath is gone but i'm not through.
loved you then and i still do
from over on the other side.

i can fly. really fly.
below the earth ... all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

it's good here on the other side.
the sweetest songs...the bluest skies.
thank you for the tears you cried
but it's good here on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth...all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side

the world is smaller than a needle's eye.
where life and death softly divide.
when you leave your skin and bones behind
i'll be waiting on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth ... all through the sky.
go tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

You are in my thoughts and prayers.

August 9, 2007

There is nothing that I can say or do to take away the pain or bring you peace in your time of sorrow, but I will offer you and your family my heart felt condolences. I also offer you my prayers that in time the pain will easy and the memories of your HERO will carry you through each day and night. I want to thank your HERO, for his/her selfless act of becoming a member of the armed forces, his/her willingness to defend the United States of America, all that we hold sacred and for the sacrifice that will forever be etched in the memories of all those who knew him/her. Though tears can never bring him/her back, we hope that our tears express our gratitude for the sacrifice that he/she made and our sorrow at his/her passing. I believe for every fallen HERO there is a star shining brightly up above to remind us of the precious gift we were given.

Your mission on earth is complete and you are now a member of GOD’s Heavenly armed forces. Stand down brave warrior and take your rightful place in Heaven with all the HEROES who have passed before.

I made a special promise to LE RON A. WILSON (KIA on 07/06/07) on the day he was laid to rest as I touched his coffin, that I would never forget him nor would I forget those that gave their lives for our country before him, with him and after him and so when I came across www.legacy.com, I thought what a great way to keep my promise to Le Ron, so I will continue to leave tributes in each guest book until the day there is no longer the need to leave these tributes to a FALLEN HERO.

REST IN PEACE, HERO, YOU WILL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN!!

In Remembrance of this Fine Soldier, Sgt. James W. Harlan, who gave his life for our Country and for Freedom.
A multitude of Thanks to James and his family, for his Courage, Dedication and Service.

There will Never Be Enough Ways, to Humbly Thank these Heroes, for their Sacrifices, my brother among them. Killed in action in Vietnam in 1967.

"For we know that if our earthly house, this tent, is destroyed, we have a building from God, a house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens."
2 Corinthians 5:1

May you find peace in knowing the love and memories you have of James, will remain in your heart forever and that this Country Remembers his Sacrifice.
I am So Deeply Sorry for your loss.

Dear Harlan family,
Though I do not know your hero or your family, I wanted to let you know that I, too, am proud of your father. He was indeed a hero. As an Army wife myself, I have been lucky that my husband has returned alive from his duties. I know how hard it is to send your loved one in the path of harm's way. I cannot imagine how hard it is to lose someone. I want to thank you for your father's job. For his service, for his work, for his sence of Duty and commitment. He is a true hero. He gave the most he could, his life. He is more than a number, more than a statistic, and I am grateful for him. For his life, for his service, and I wanted you to know this. He was a shining example for people to follow and the world is a better place because he was in it. Thank you for him, thank you for his service, for sharing him. He will be remembered. From one military family to another, may your memories keep you warm, know he is an Angel on your shoulder now and a hero to us all.
