Daniel P. Unger Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jan. 28, 2005.
The son of a Baptist minister, Daniel P. Unger worked as a missionary in youth prisons. "He was a good soldier. He was a good man of God," Marc Unger said of his son. The 19-year-old from Exeter, Calif., was killed May 25 by hostile fire in Iskandariyah, Iraq. He was based in Visalia, Calif. "I can''t tell you how close we were," Marc Unger said of his relationship with his son. The soldier joined the National Guard at the beginning of his senior year in high school, where he was a center fielder on the baseball team. He left for boot camp just two days after graduating. Survivors also include his mother, Lynda Unger.

We apologize for being so late in expressing our deepest condolences to you and your family. Daniel, while your name is spoken and your memory kept, both by those who loved you and even by those who, like myself, didn't know you in your lifetime, you will never be forgotten. I hope that life is being kind to your family and friends and that they have better days in which to share their special memories of you. Rest in Peace

I grew up with Daniel. He was the son of my Karate instructor and we went to high school together. He was a great person, and his sacrifice affected my whole town. He will always be remembered.

It is difficult to know what to say since I want to express my sincere sympathy to the family and friends of Pfc Unger. Please know that your loved one is not forgotten. I wish everyone impacted by this tragic loss strength and peace. I hope that Pfc Unger knew that there are people in America who respect his great courage in serving as a member of the US military. Although I did not know him, I know that he must have been a very special person to be willing to do something that most Americans will never have to experience, and for that we can never say thank you enough.
Thank you Pfc Unger!

To the family of Pfc. Unger,
Please know that just as your loved one will remain in your hearts and minds, his sacrifice and that of your family, will remain with the people he died defending. Words cannot express the gratitude we feel for his bravery and selflessness, or the heartache we feel for your loss. God grant you the peace that passes all understanding.

In Memory of Daniel ~ (Debra Estep)

Holding you all in my thoughts and prayers.

The Wind on The Downs

“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”

(Written by Marian Allen during World War l )

Two lines that I wish you to keep near your heart…….

“You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe”

I did not know Daniel, but I am remembering
his service. He is my hero. !

The Other Side

i'm over on the other side
where life and death softly divide.
left my skin and bones behind
now i'm over on the other side.

can you feel me there with you?
my breath is gone but i'm not through.
loved you then and i still do
from over on the other side.

i can fly. really fly.
below the earth ... all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

it's good here on the other side.
the sweetest songs...the bluest skies.
thank you for the tears you cried
but it's good here on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth...all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side

the world is smaller than a needle's eye.
where life and death softly divide.
when you leave your skin and bones behind
i'll be waiting on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth ... all through the sky.
go tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

I find it difficult to imagine the pain of losing a child. At 19, Daniel had his whole life ahead of him. We won't ever know what more he might have accomplished but reading the words written by his family, and his comrades, I'm sure it would have been a good life. As it is, this life cut short was still well lived, with purpose, determination and a willingness to serve, whether in his community or with the Military. Rest well Soldier, and know that the love and support of your friends and family is echoed around your Country.

Mr. & Mrs. Unger,
I wish there was another way to contact you. I did not have the oppurtunity to know your son. However I was a member of the California National Guard for over 10 yrs. I was working as a recruiters assistant when I recieved the announcement of your loss. After that I deployed to Kosovo October 2004, and came across a pamplet while attending church saying "Those that want to be saved, Shall be saved". It was a short story about a bunker, and Daniel. It was refering to church. In the story, it mentioned that Daniel wanted to save people and get em to the bunker, (the bunker resembled church) hence those who want to be saved with go to the bunker/church. The story touched me in so many ways. After I had returned to the states, now at Fort Lewis Washington to process to return to California, I came across this cart in the PX, that had memorabilly of fallen soldiers. I looked and seen PFC Daniel P. Unger. A bracelett honoring your son. I knew right at that moment, your son had touched my life, not once (with the announcement), not twice (with the pamplet), but now three times with the bracelett. I had to purchase it, and honor him, allow him to be part of my life, and carry his memory.

I never made it back to the California National Guard. I decided while at Fort Lewis, to enlist into the Active Army. I am now serving in Baghdad, Iraq, and wear this bracelett everyday honoring your son.

I often get ask, "Did you know him" I say " I wish" But I know he was brought into my life for a reason, and explain my story.

I want to thank you, and also wanted to share my memories of your son. Even though I never physically met him, I know him in my heart.

God Bless, and continue to live through his memories, as I have allowed him to live through me.
