Paul Syverson Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jan. 28, 2005.
When CIA agent Johnny "Mike" Spann was killed in an Afghanistan prison uprising, Maj. Paul R. Syverson III was one of the Special Forces commandos sent in to retrieve his body and curtail the intense fighting. Syverson was one of five soldiers injured in the November 2001 uprising by a misguided U.S. bomb, and earned a Purple Heart. He didn''t complain, despite the ongoing pain. When he was a company commander, "his soldiers would stop what they were doing just to speak with him or be near him if only for a few moments," said Lt. Col. Christopher Haas. Syverson, 32, of Lake Zurich, Ill., was killed June 16 at a U.S. base north of Baghdad where he stopped to buy equipment for fellow soldiers from the 5th Special Forces Group, based at Fort Campbell. Syverson had volunteered to go to Iraq a third time to set up for other soldiers to soon follow. "That really sums up what a fantastic, outstanding soldier and officer he was," Haas said. He is survived by his wife, Jackie, his son, Paul, 7, and daughter Amy, 2 months.

Hello,

We apologize for being so late in expressing our deepest condolences to you and your family. We want you to know that we will be sending Care Packages to deployed troops this week and several of these will be dedicated to your loved one. Each package will carry the name, photo, service branch, rank and hometown of Paul R. Syverson III US Army Major.

We realize that this is a small tribute, but we do this with all respect and sincerity and we want you to know that it is made possible by thousands of like-minded individuals from across the American youth hockey community, their families, friends and others who support our mission.

We will not forget. May God Bless you and keep you safe and strong.

I was researching old friends from Civil Air Patrol and learned of Paul's death. I spent time at Blue Beret with him in the 80's. That was so long ago and we were just kids then, but I still remember him. My family will pray for Paul and his family.

I had the pleasure of knowing "Big Paul" through his wife, Jackie. I went to Nursing school with Jackie and we happened to have sons who were in Pre-K together and developed a friendship. I just wanted to say that he was such an awesome man and soilder. He was so funny and always had a smile on his face. I thought so highly of him and I am grateful to have known him. He was a model father and always made time to do something original and fun with "Little Paul" despite his hectic Special Forces schedule. He made sure to spend quality time with LP, and oftentimes, he included my son. I think of him often and hope that Jackie and Little Paul are doing ok. Amy was just a baby and my heart aches thinking of how great her daddy was and how she will never get to experience that. Jackie, if you read this, please know that I think of you often. Paul, thank you for the ultimate sacrifice.

Paul and I were lieutenants together at Fort Stewart, in 3/41 Field Artillery. Although we didn’t work closely, we socialized together on occasion and I considered him a friend. I appreciated his intelligence, his sensitivity and his cheerful independence - there aren’t many violinist Army officers, and probably fewer who would admit it in our macho organization, but Paul was proud, and I respected him for it. Even then Paul wanted to be a Special Forces officer, and I wasn’t surprised to learn he had succeeded.

I kept track of Paul for a while after I left the battalion, learning of his marriage to Jacquelyn and the birth of their son, but a new assignment and a new marriage (which I owe to Paul) distracted me for a while. Years later I tried to reestablish contact, only to learn he had died a number of months earlier. The news filled me with grief, and I offer my most heartfelt sympathy, especially to Paul’s wife, children and parents.

It may seem a little strange, to some, that someone who hadn’t seen Paul since 1996 would feel the need to write, now almost five years since he died. But as I think about it, I realize that’s the whole point of this message: Paul was such a memorable person, such a good and decent man, that even an Army buddy from thirteen years ago continues to be touched by his loss, and will always treasure his memory. I hope this knowledge brings some measure of comfort to those who love him.

Dear family of Maj. Paul Syverson,

We want to say thank you. We understand that no words can be adequate for your sorrow. We certainly do not want to intrude upon your privacy. As Americans we want you to know that we deeply appreciate the ultimate sacrifice your loved one has made for all of us. We also would like for you to be aware that with this letter comes our special concern and prayers for you. We are all safer because young men and women who love their country, and know the value of a free nation, are willing to put themselves in harms way, and lay down their lives to keep this nation free and safe for all of us.
Your sacrifice is also very great. We know that we can give little comfort; however, the knowledge that your loved one did not die in vain, but died in the service of our country, gives each of us a noble example of the value of life, and the responsibility of freedom. We hope this will bring pride and comfort to you.
We at Gethsemane Church believe that there is purpose to life. We send this letter with our deepest appreciation for the greatest of sacrifices, you and your loved one have given to this country. We know it is not enough, but please allow us to assure you that your loved one is not forgotten.

Very Sincerely

Frank G. Noyes

It is difficult to know what to say since I want to express my sincere sympathy to the family and friends of Maj Syverson. Please know that your loved one is not forgotten. I wish everyone impacted by this tragic loss strength and peace. I hope that Maj Syverson knew that there are people in America who respect his great courage in serving as a member of the US military. Although I did not know him, I know that he must have been a very special person to be willing to do something that most Americans will never have to experience, and for that we can never say thank you enough.
Thank you Maj Syverson!

The Wind on The Downs

“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”

(Written by Marian Allen during World War l )

Two lines that I wish you to keep near your heart…….

“You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe”

I did not know Paul, but I am remembering
his service. He is my hero. !

The Other Side

i'm over on the other side
where life and death softly divide.
left my skin and bones behind
now i'm over on the other side.

can you feel me there with you?
my breath is gone but i'm not through.
loved you then and i still do
from over on the other side.

i can fly. really fly.
below the earth ... all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

it's good here on the other side.
the sweetest songs...the bluest skies.
thank you for the tears you cried
but it's good here on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth...all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side

the world is smaller than a needle's eye.
where life and death softly divide.
when you leave your skin and bones behind
i'll be waiting on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth ... all through the sky.
go tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

Gold Star Mother,

August 9, 2007

There is nothing that I can say or do to take away the pain or bring you peace in your time of sorrow, but I will offer you and your family my heart felt condolences. I also offer you my prayers that in time the pain will easy and the memories of your HERO will carry you through each day and night. I want to thank your HERO, for his/her selfless act of becoming a member of the armed forces, his/her willingness to defend the United States of America, all that we hold sacred and for the sacrifice that will forever be etched in the memories of all those who knew him/her. Though tears can never bring him/her back, we hope that our tears express our gratitude for the sacrifice that he/she made and our sorrow at his/her passing. I believe for every fallen HERO there is a star shining brightly up above to remind us of the precious gift we were given.

Your mission on earth is complete and you are now a member of GOD’s Heavenly armed forces. Stand down brave warrior and take your rightful place in Heaven with all the HEROES who have passed before.

I made a special promise to LE RON A. WILSON (KIA on 07/06/07) on the day he was laid to rest as I touched his coffin, that I would never forget him nor would I forget those that gave their lives for our country before him, with him and after him and so when I came across www.legacy.com, I thought what a great way to keep my promise to Le Ron, so I will continue to leave tributes in each guest book until the day there is no longer the need to leave these tributes to a FALLEN HERO.

REST IN PEACE, HERO, YOU WILL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN!!

To the family of Paul I offer my sympathies. Sadly it is not always apparent when allies who have served together with us are killed. Paul's death became apparent to us much later. Let it be said that the british forces who serve alongside the american forces serve with the same dedication and loss. In combat we are not just friends and allies but brothers in arms.
I hope the pain at the loss of Paul will be overshadowed by the knowledge of his joy of life. An exceptional soldier, it was an honour and priveledge to have known and served alongside Paul. May you rest in peace with all our other comrades. God bless you. Rest assured that you will never be forgotten. My prayers are with your family and friends.

My deepest sympathies go to Paul's family and friends. His death was a terrible loss for everyone close to him and to America. I was Paul's 1st and 2nd grade teacher at Olive School in Arlington Heights. I have many fun memories of him as a child. Then, in 2002, we head that Paul had been injured in Afghanistan. My students sent him get well messages and drawings. He kindly replied with a long letter and photos of himself at work with Special Forces. You could tell how much he loved his work and valued the help they gave to others in need. This reconnection made his loss all the more difficult for us. I am thankful for Paul's short but meangingful life. I value his memory and his selfless contribution to freedom around the world.

Sincerely,

Cathy Sauer McQuillan

Paul, you were one of my son's best friends. You, my son and Jim T were the 3 amigos. I remember when you used to come over to our house and you 3 young men used to "hang out" here. I considered you and Jim my 3rd and 4th sons. I have a picture of you in uniform on my desk at work and every time I look at it I get tears. I know my son and Jim miss you very very much as do my husband and myself. May God watch over your mother and father, Jackie, Paul IV and Amy. Little Paul knows, and Amy will know what a great son, husband, father and soldier you were. God bless you.
