Torey J. Dantzler Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jan. 28, 2005.
Torey J. Dantzler was the kind of guy whose legacy lives on in high school hallways. "He is one of those you still talk about long after they are gone," said Buster Duplissey, who coached Dantzler in football. "He holds a special place in our hearts. You couldn''t ask for a better kid." Dantzler, 22, of Columbia, La., died July 22 when a bomb went off near his convoy in Samarra. He was based in Kaiserslautern, Germany. "The world lost a great person," said Dantzler''s wife, Serena. "He was the head of the household, and I don''t have a best friend anymore. It''s just hard. It''s going to be hard to start over and be a single parent." High school classmate Mitch Bratton remembered the athlete for the things he did off the field. "Torey always had a joke," Bratton said. "I always remember him mentoring the younger kids on the football team. That was how he was." In addition to his wife, Dantzler is survived by his two children, Kayla, 22 months, and Torey Jr., 4 months.

I knew him and his family when I lived in Germany 2000-2003. What I remember was his love for his family, his wife and daughter at that time. When he was off he had that beautiful little girl all the time with or without his wife. I loved him and the last time I saw him I was headed back to the US, I said keep being great young man.

Ultimate sacrifice to country and family. Was just thinking about the only friend lost in Iraq, was remembering Dantzler playing with him on the post flag football team. Intense on the field, and always had his family with him, always wondered how the wife and kids are doing, hope all is well. Still hurt lost a good friend.

Still thinking about Torey. Still heartbroken a classmate is gone forever. I hope time has helped heal the family. Gone but not forgotten.

Hello,
We would like to express our deepest condolences and also to let the Dantzler Family know that we recently sent Care Packages to American troops in Afghanistan. Each box carried a dedication sheet that includes the name, service information and photo of your loved one. We recognize that this is a humble tribute, but we wanted you to know that it is heartfelt and made possible by thousands of like-minded individuals in the youth hockey community and beyond. We will not forget. May God Bless you and keep you strong.
Sincerely,
Charlie Gili & Family

I'm setting here right now putting the football banquet together and tryng to figure out who deserves the Torey Dantzler award that is given out every year in remembrance of our hero. What player deserves your award. Has to be a kid that understands what team is, that self is not more important than team, what hardwork is, what being there for others mean, and ultimately what giving it all means. These are the things that made you special at Caldwell Parish High School and obviously special when you left as you continued to give it all. I promise you and your family as long as I'm around your name and #40 will always be remembered at Homecoming and Football Banquet. You are truly my hero and an American Hero!! What a smile!!

It is difficult to know what to say since I want to express my sincere sympathy to the family and friends of Pfc Dantzler. Please know that your loved one is not forgotten. I wish everyone impacted by this tragic loss strength and peace. I hope that Pfc Dantzler knew that there are people in America who respect his great courage in serving as a member of the US military. Although I did not know him, I know that he must have been a very special person to be willing to do something that most Americans will never have to experience and for that we can never say thank you enough.
Thank you Pfc Dantzler!

Holding you all in my thoughts and prayers.

The Wind on The Downs

“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”

(Written by Marian Allen during World War l )

Two lines that I wish you to keep near your heart…….

“You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe”

I did not know Torey, but I am remembering
his service. He is my hero. !

The Other Side

i'm over on the other side
where life and death softly divide.
left my skin and bones behind
now i'm over on the other side.

can you feel me there with you?
my breath is gone but i'm not through.
loved you then and i still do
from over on the other side.

i can fly. really fly.
below the earth ... all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

it's good here on the other side.
the sweetest songs...the bluest skies.
thank you for the tears you cried
but it's good here on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth...all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side

the world is smaller than a needle's eye.
where life and death softly divide.
when you leave your skin and bones behind
i'll be waiting on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth ... all through the sky.
go tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

Be Still

Be still like the grass on a melancholy summer day
Be still like desert shrub.

Be calm and you will hear your loved one speak, in the stillness, in the calm, their love resounds.

If you are still this promise I make, you will hear the voice of your loved one helping you along your way.

Those we love remain with us,

for love itself lives on...

And cherished memories never fade,

Because a loved one's gone....

Those we love can never be,

more than a thought apart....

For as long as there is memory,

They'll live on in the heart.

Psalm 23

1

The LORD is my shepherd, I shall not be in want.

2

He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters,

3

He restores my soul. He guides me in paths of righteousness for his name's sake.

4

Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.

5

You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies. You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows.

6

Surely goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the LORD forever.

This is a verse that I have found to be comforting to me during my husbands death. Remember that when it seems that no one else is round, God is still there with you! And he will be your rock!

My daughter,McKaLyne, and I send our heartfelt sympathy for your loss! God Bless this warrior, God Bless those whom serve freedom's cause! They are our true HERO's!!!!

I am deeply sorry about your loss. I remember Dantzler from being stationed on Kleber Kaserne, GE. He was a great soldier. I hope everything is going well with you and your kids. When i left Germany you were still pregnant with your youngest child. I can imagine how hard things were for you when he past. You and your children will always be in my prayers.
