Jason T. Poindexter Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jan. 28, 2005.
Jason Poindexter had trouble in boot camp because of his happy-go-lucky, impish nature and constant smile. "He got in trouble a lot," said his mother, Sharon Westbrook. "He was born with this smile and he had a real hard time controlling it." Poindexter, 20, of San Angelo, Texas, was killed Sept. 12 in hostile action in Iraq, less than a week after he arrived. He was based at Camp Pendleton. Poindexter played football and ran track in high school before graduating in 2002. Westbrook said she tried to talk him out of joining the Marines, but "he made up his mind to do it." He was home in July for two weeks leave. "I wonder now did I spend enough time with him?" Westbrook said. "Did I tell him I loved him enough?" Westbrook said her son reassured her before going to Iraq. "He said for me not to worry, that he was just going over there to do a job and he''d be back in a few months," Westbrook said. "It was like he was going across town." Poindexter is also survived by his father, Sam Poindexter.

Hello,
We realize that we are very late to express our deepest condolences, but we wanted to let your family and friends know that we will be sending Care Packages to deployed troops this month and several of these will be dedicated to your loved one. Each package will carry the name, photo and hometown of Jason T. Poindexter US Marine Private 1st Class.

We realize that this is a small tribute, but we do this with all respect and sincerity and we want you to know that it is made possible by thousands of like-minded individuals from across the American youth hockey community, their families and friends and others who support our mission.

We will not forget. May God Bless you and keep you safe and strong.

Sincerely,

I did not know Jason Poindexter. My only connection to him is that we were in the same training company in SOI. My one clear memory of him, is that he allowed me to borrow a bootlegged dvd copy of The Last Samurai that he had. It's possible we interacted more than just that one occasion, but that is the one I remember. After SOI graduation, we went our separate ways. That was in mid-2004. Despite that small connection, the short amount of time, and the length of time that has passed since, I still think about him, and look him up online. I was informed of his death in Iraq, while I was at Guantanamo Bay, by another Marine who was also in SOI with the both of us, and had read about his death in Leatherneck magazine. Since then, the memory of him has stuck with me, and I can't explain why. Like a lot of comments I've read, I remember his perpetual smile, and maybe that is a reason why his memory sticks with me. Or maybe it's because I perceived him to be a goofy, happy-go-lucky guy, in a sea of young Marines who were, or were trying to be, anything but. Perhaps it was his unique last name. Whatever the reason, I've always felt a profound feeling of loss and sorrow that his life was cut short so young, that so many family, friends, and fellow Marines feel so much pain at his loss. And guilt that he and others didn't make it through their first year in the Corps, while I and others made it through four years during the height of the War on Terror. While I don't have the memories or knowledge about Poindexter's life and service that many others have, his memory, and smile, will always be with me.

I didn't know Jason, but I think of him and other Marines that served with 2nd Battalion, 5th Marine Regiment, and gave the ultimate sacrifice for Country and Corps. I'm proud to share hometowns, the title Marine, and membership of the most decorated Marine Battalion in the Corps. Thank you for your service and sacrifice.

I never met Jason, but I grew up with his Dad Sam. I would like to extend my deepest sympathy to Sam and Sharon, and all of Jasons family. Although I never met Jason, I know his character, as I am a former Marine. Thank you Jason for your sacrifice, you ARE loved, missed and thought of every day by your fellow Marines who you served, your family who loved you, and your country to which our freedom YOU secured. Anthony said a day doesn't go by that he doesn't think about you. Even though he is out of 2/5 physcially, he's still there in spirit. I only knew Poindexter as a Marine in 2nd platoon. I remember seeing him that summer at 29 palms and thinking he's a lot tougher than he looks, he got some kind of commendation for his hard work during that op. The day it happened I was in the hummv behind them and think about it everyday. He was a damn good Marine. Semper Fi.

Holding you all in my thoughts and prayers.

The Wind on The Downs

“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”

(Written by Marian Allen during World War l )

Two lines that I wish you to keep near your heart…….

“You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe”

I did not know Jason, but I am remembering
his service. He is my hero. !

The Other Side

i'm over on the other side
where life and death softly divide.
left my skin and bones behind
now i'm over on the other side.

can you feel me there with you?
my breath is gone but i'm not through.
loved you then and i still do
from over on the other side.

i can fly. really fly.
below the earth ... all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

it's good here on the other side.
the sweetest songs...the bluest skies.
thank you for the tears you cried
but it's good here on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth...all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side

the world is smaller than a needle's eye.
where life and death softly divide.
when you leave your skin and bones behind
i'll be waiting on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth ... all through the sky.
go tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

Thank you and all the fallen for making the ultimate sacrifice. May we be worthy.

August 13, 2007

There is nothing that I can say or do to take away the pain or bring you peace in your time of sorrow, but I will offer you and your family my heart felt condolences. I also offer you my prayers that in time the pain will easy and the memories of your HERO will carry you through each day and night. I want to thank your HERO, for his/her selfless act of becoming a member of the armed forces, his/her willingness to defend the United States of America, all that we hold sacred and for the sacrifice that will forever be etched in the memories of all those who knew him/her. Though tears can never bring him/her back, we hope that our tears express our gratitude for the sacrifice that he/she made and our sorrow at his/her passing. I believe for every fallen HERO there is a star shining brightly up above to remind us of the precious gift we were given.

Your mission on earth is complete and you are now a member of GOD’’s Heavenly armed forces. Stand down brave warrior and take your rightful place in Heaven with all the HEROES who have passed before.

I made a special promise to LE RON A. WILSON, a dear family friend (KIA on 07/06/07) on the day he was laid to rest as I touched his coffin, that I would never forget him nor would I forget those that gave their lives for our country before him, with him and after him and so when I came across www.legacy.com, I thought what a great way to keep my promise to Le Ron, so I will continue to leave tributes in each guest book until the day there is no longer the need to leave these tributes to a FALLEN HERO.

REST IN PEACE, HERO, YOU WILL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN!!

June 12, 2007

To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say...
but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.
I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
Here, there's no more tears of sadness; here is just eternal love.

Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I'm with you every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,
God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."

It's good to have you back again; you were missed while you were gone.
As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on.
I need you here badly; you're part of my plan.
There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man."

God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.
And when you lie in bed at night, the day's chores put to flight.
God and I are closest to you....in the middle of the night.

When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years
because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.
But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.

I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
But if I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.
But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.

There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.
It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too...
that as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.

If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain,
then you can say to God at night......"My day was not in vain."
And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile,
knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile.

So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low,
just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.
When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.

And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.

I was just looking through the honor role of our young hero's sacrifices to me and all other grateful citizens of this world.

When I came across one who walked the same streets and shopped at the same Wal-Mart, maybe he said hidy to me, I cried for the loss of this fine young example of the fact that kids today are of the same caliber as they were in 1941.

I am so sorry for the fact that you will not get to enjoy the proof of the skill and backbone with which he was raised. Please know at the very second he left us Jesus Christ took him in his arms and is holding him for you.

In time, there will come a day when the tears of sorrow will softly flow into sighs of remembrance. Your heart will begin to heal itself.

Grieving will be interrupted by episodes of joy; and you will hear the whisper of hope.

There will come a day when you will welcome the pangs of remembrance as a sun shower of the soul; a turning of the tide; the promise of peace.

There will come a day when you will risk loving, go on believing,

and treasure the remembering.
