Harrison J. Meyer Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jan. 28, 2005.
In high school, Harrison J. Meyer was such a team player that he brought in pizza and made cheesecake for pals on the track team. "He was the kid who was trying to make all the other kids relax, feel good about competing," said Andy Cox, Meyer's coach. Meyer, 20, of Worthington, Ohio, died Nov. 26 when his unit was attacked in Ramadi. A 2003 high school graduate, he was stationed at Camp Howze, South Korea. "He said he wanted to help people," said Brandon Brevard, a friend. "He was a lifeguard at the pool and he wanted to be a medic." Friends said their high school years were filled with laughs, most thanks to Meyer. "He always had scams to try and make money, but they never worked," said Steve Brown. Meyer recently called Brevard and said he had already survived several close calls in Iraq. "He said, 'Brandon, I don't know if I'm going to make it,'" Brevard said. Meyer's parents, William and Debra Meyer, said their son's kindness and humor touched many. "He exemplifies the true spirit of patriotism and sacrifice by his courageous actions as a combat medic," Debra Meyer said in a statement.

Dear Harrison Meyer,

You don't know me, but I will be the recipient of a service animal named after you. I will be taking ownership of "Harry" within several months through the non-profit "Veteran's Moving Forward". I am a 100% disabled US Army Veteran and I'm hopeful Harry will provide me with much needed help as I deal with my own issues from service.

I'm honored to receive Harry, and knowing what you have done for your country and your fellow servicemen/women, I will make sure your namesake is honored with dignity and pride. Sincerely, Jason A., Oak Hill, Virginia. US Army 1992-1997.

I oay tribute to Harry on the Military Wall of Honor at my current school in Olentangy. I was a teacher at Kilbourne Middle School when I knew Harry, and as a high schooler he often came back to visit. He is never forgotten!

Hello,
We would like to express our deepest condolences and also let the Meyer Family know that we recently sent Care Packages to American troops in the war zones. Each box carried a dedication sheet that includes the name, service information and a photo of your loved one. We recognize that this is a humble tribute, but we wanted you to know that it is heartfelt and made possible by thousands of like-minded individuals in the youth hockey community and beyond. We will not forget. May God Bless you and keep you strong.
Sincerely,
Charlie Gili & Family

On Thanks Giving Day in our house is a busy day. Up at 0800 to put the turky in the smoker for it's 6 hour smoke, cooking of the pies and other foods. On Thanks Giving Day my thoughts were with you Harrison and your family. Life is a wonderful gift and that gift you gave to America. I want to thank you Harrison and your family for my gift of Freedom.

Holding you all in my thoughts and prayers.

The Wind on The Downs

“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”

(Written by Marian Allen during World War l )

Two lines that I wish you to keep near your heart…….

“You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe”

I did not know Harrison, but I am remembering
his service and sacrifice. He is my hero. !

The Other Side

i'm over on the other side
where life and death softly divide.
left my skin and bones behind
now i'm over on the other side.

can you feel me there with you?
my breath is gone but i'm not through.
loved you then and i still do
from over on the other side.

i can fly. really fly.
below the earth ... all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

it's good here on the other side.
the sweetest songs...the bluest skies.
thank you for the tears you cried
but it's good here on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth...all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side

the world is smaller than a needle's eye.
where life and death softly divide.
when you leave your skin and bones behind
i'll be waiting on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth ... all through the sky.
go tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

To the family and friends of Harrison Meyer: I live in the tiny mountain town of South Fork, Colorado where the "Run for the Fallen" came through. A flag and a placard was placed at milepost 191 in Harrison's honor. That also happens to be the location of my church "The New Hope Church". I took a picture of the flag and placard and would be more than happy to send it to anyone who contacts me. Harrison's sacrifice and YOUR sacrifice will never be forgotten. Thank you.

I think of Meyer and the memories just remind me of what a goofball he was. Meyer was a very focused and bright chap who always managed to get himself into trouble sometimes having fun. He is one of the very few people that made AIT so memorable, and I will always remember how ridiculously smart the "clown,"as we used to call him, was. I was told by Jim Miller, another soldier who passed away a few months after Meyer,of what had happened, and I was so heartbroken. He was the first soldier to have a face,he wasnt just another statistic, but someone that I personally knew. Meyer, the crazy memories live on. We miss you.

John 15:13 Greater love has no one than this, than to lay down one's life for his friends.
That's Harry Meyer

Psalm 116:15 Precious in the sight of the Lord Is the death of His saints.
(From Pastor Marc Unger whose son was killed in Iraq, 25 May 2004)
We keep Harry's photo (shown with another soldier giving the peace sign) in our Bible to always remember and not to forget those who serve.

If this person can stand in battle to ensure my freedom, then I will stand in grief with his/her family to honor him/her. For every fallen HERO there is a bright star that shines in the evening sky to remind us of the cherished gift we were given – even if for too short a time.
My heart breaks again as I sign yet another guest book of another courageous young soldier who gave their life so selflessly. I wish I never found myself in a position to have to sign another guest book for the rest of my life, but I promised LE RON A. WILSON (a dear friend KIA 7/6/07, 18yrs old) that neither he nor any like him would be forgotten and so I will continue until the day there is no longer the need.
